I discovered the following on Virgin Australia's business class page.

Virgin Australia's Business Class | Virgin Australia

Embraer E190 Business class seat features include:
  • Luxury leather
  • Generous recline
  • 34 inch (85cm) seat pitch
There is also a blurb about entertainment and comfort packs.

Does anyone know if there will be new seats, or are Virgin Australia re-labelling premium economy seats as business?

Airlines with 1x2 front cabin seating on Embraers typically have 36" pitch (these airlines also have a different over-head bin configuration in the front section, which is skewed to match this seat layout).

e.g. on Delta E175's

Has anyone seen an official announcement from Virgin that it plans a refit to introduce "this version" of business class to its E-Jets?

I have a feeling that due to the different overhead bin configuration that it cant be retrofited. So I think we can expect a 'EuroBusines' or 'BusinessLite' seating similar to QF's 734 A/C with full business service. I would expect a discount on routes operated by E90 A/C where 73H A/C ALSO operate. e.g. CNS-BNE, CNS-SYD, TSV-BNE, MKY-BNE, SYD-OOL, ADL-MEL ...

Somebody pointed out the blurb on the VA website to me the other day, funny they don't include a seat map unlike other aircraft.

I'd say they are keeping the seating config (1-2 or 2-2) under lock and key until the first aircraft has been refitted. A bit like the A330 2-3-2 vs 2-2-2 configuration earlier this year.

IMO They'd be crazy not to have 1-2 for a proper J cabin.

My Friday evening 737 from SYD has changed to an E90:evil:

Well whatever they do, it had better be significant. I dont think anyone will be too thrilled about buying a J ticket to find a hot omelette is the point of difference costing $400 odd extra.

If you ask me the US airways pictured above looks a bit coughpola for a J cabin. Wow! I get to sit in the same seats this side of a curtain. I feel so special...

The BA ejets J seating is identical to the Y cabin. Probably because they alter the configuration depending on the route. But the flights are so short you hardly notice it. It's not like you're crammed in to the embraers.

Pretty sure they are not the same seats as in Y.... The US seat map at the link above shows that they are wider (as well as having 36" pitch) and that certainly was the case on the AC E-Jet I flew on... Not bad seats for a small a/c!

If Virgin go for a 2-2 with 34" then I'd agree with you!!!!

The Virgin site says that the current PE seats are only 33" so that means they also have to find 2" extra space for two rows of J - which might mean one less row in Y and a new bulkhead like on the 737s? Not sure how else it would increase - the new J seats are certainly not slimmer than the old seats. The pricing on the 190s is the same as 737s after January 18 so I doubt they would still have 2-2 config otherwise it would certainly not justify the price.

I wonder if the J seats installed on the 737s are EJet compatible? (In a 2-1 config of course) I would be nice to have that consistency of product.

Well, it's not like they're using the same seats in all of their new aircraft: the A330 seats are very different to the 737 seats...

Thats only beause the current A330 fleet came fitted with those seats, being old planes. It will be interesting to see what the brand new A330s are fitted out with when they arrive sometime next year. The same seats or similar? The 737 seat or something different again. I'd like to see a pod style seat, personally. I like the shells.

The 737/E-jet make up the narrow body fleet and I would have thought it would make sense (if possible) to have the same J seats on both.

The A330 seats are recovered ex-emirates international J recliners - they're not a custom designed seat that could be rolled out fleet wide.

Since the recent issues with seat safety airlines and suppliers have clamped down on what they put into plans, it's pretty rare to have more than one suppliers product on a plane and that supplier may only supply to one brand, so product from Boeing and Airbus will be different in a lot of cases, as will Embrarer !

Which issues with seat safety?

Looks like I have to eat my words from above. Booked on an E190 MEL-SYD for the 20th of Jan in J and went to select my seat and found the below seat map. Very disappointed that it is showing 2x2 seating in J. I may be jumping the gun - and I hope I am and that the seat maps haven't yet been updated. But if this is true, then it's disappointing that will be considered business class. Needless to say, I've changed my flight to a 738 half an hour later, and will wait until someone confirms here on the config before I book an E190 again!
