Is it worth spending ~AUD600-700 more to fly HKG-SYD with QF A380 and 747 earning 200SCs as opposed to QF A330 both ways or EK777 one-way and QF A330 the other but only earning 80SCs? I don't think I need the SCs unless I go for Partner Gold again which is highly unlikely.

It concerns me I am asking as it should be a no brainer even though the A380 and 747 are better aircraft.

I'm not the best person to ask

We're going to HKG in Oct for our 20th anniversary....via BA16 F, layover, then CX J to HKG......then CX J back to SIN, then home on QF52 in J. All on points and not a SC in sight.

And unfortunately I've got points oozing out of my ears and can't use them for travel end of January 2015 as there isn't a reward seat in sight unless you want fly Jetstar on 29 January.

Yes I know busy time of the year.

As you have no need for points or SC (as already LTG) I'd go the A330 and/or 777 route.

I understand. It took me about 10 years to work out I needed to plan ahead for award tickets ;)

They are both QF/Emirates. I was more worried about the better feeling of travelling on an A380 or 747. But I don't think it is worth that much extra.

Thinking of buying economy Emirates both ways and travelling in business class because I am Platinum. I heard on AFF all QF Platinums are guaranteed op-ups on Emirates.

No real difference IMHO, especially 747 v A330. I'd save your money :)

Who told you? I have a band with brickbats and a muslin sack ready to dish out punishment....

It's on every Emirates thread on AFF so it must be right. Fly Emirates because they'll treat you better than Qantas.

Well I am going to put that theory to the test.

Must be restricted to WPs because as a WP1 I didn't notice any extra love.

Expect to be disappointed ... then if anything better than disappointment happens then you are ahead. :D

HKG must be the anniversary place, our 30th and intended destination.

I am planning ahead. It is over 6 months to end of January 2015 and there are no award seats.

Seriously I do plan ahead but I have changed plans the past couple of weeks. Now frantically trying to piece together suitable airfares without breaking bank. Qantas, AA miles and MR points are all useless.

Huge difference in my opinion but you are right. Not worth paying the difference I mentioned.

I have flown a few times with EK, and whilst the service was good have never been offered an op-up.

If you have no need of points/SCs then stick with the cheaper option, and keep your fingers crossed.

Hmmm, yet I know people who got an op-up on EK with no status anywhere. Maybe everyone gets an upgrade ;)

I was just having a bit of fun. Silly statements like "CX treats all Qantas Platinums better" and "I am now going to fly Emirates because they guarantee op-ups to Qantas Platinums" make me laugh when i see them.

I have need for SCs as I want to maintain Platinum. The QF/Emirates flights BKK-SYD are the cheapest available believe it or not. Excluding MH flights which I am still skeptical booking.

Received a pretty good quote from travel agent in BKK for the flights I want including 1 night layover in SYD on the return. Asking if they can add-on QF codeshares CNX-BKK for reasonable price and I am laughing all the way to Platinum.

Re: The totally off-topic thread

I have January award travel booked on QF - I did book at 350-353 days.

This is where being ballsy can pay off. For the past 10 years I've been getting F & J award seats (>50) by waiting until the last week/s. QFF will (or nearly always) cough up CX and BA seats at the last minute.....this is how the amaroos have been travelling as a family pack up at the pointing end.
