All you has left is that hopefully 1A would lower the blinds after takeoff !

Without it, 2A could hardly see the screen, let alone the content.

I was forced to politely request 1A to lower his blinds and to his credit, he graciously did so.

You'd do the same for 3A, wouldn't you ?

Well, after careful and balanced consideration of all the pros and... pros, I went ahead with the F (PER-)MEL-LHR option :o

I've selected 2A and 3A, thinking with no aligned aisle to aisle rows, the extra privacy of the A side would probably work best for the two of us.

Yeah... nah

I've sat in the A side several times and never had to ask the person in front of me to lower their blinds. There is a screen between the seats that seems to be automatically raised after takeoff that blocks most of the window light.

Will have to see if I am so affected next time I'm in 3A (not long now :) ).

So where is your next flight in F, Mr Hvr?

Re: What the best seat(s) to choose in First class on A380?

Attached is a photo of the said screen with the blinds open on the adjacent (forward) seat.

The "light well" effect is considerable if you were to watch the movies etc...

Dining is OK.

I don't get people who keep the blinds open long after takeoff. There is nothing to see outside so why not shut them as courtesy to other pax who want to sleep or watch TV.

I love looking outside and prefer keeping the blinds up even at night.

I keep the blinds open too but close them at night as the early morning light on an overnight flight is a killer. But even so have taken a few nice sunrise pictures.

On the Emirates overnighter from Adelaide the blinds automatically came down and weren't opened until just before the 5am arrival.

Re: What the best seat(s) to choose in First class on A380?

One can argue that's why eyeshades were invented for inflight sleeping but it's kinda harder to watch movies against a bright background.

Not impossible but just unpleasant.

Had the other blokes refused to lower his blinds, I'd be stuffed - uncomfortable but couldn't do much either.

I thought the staff come and proactively lower the blinds at a certain time? Well that is my experience in all QF A380 cabins...

They certainly do, somewhat prematurely on QF93 usually.

OT:

Do you keep your curtains closed at home during the day?

I close the blinds on an aircraft to suit my anti-jetlag strategy. Having a very dark cabin (cabin lights dimmed too) when it is 2pm is not conducive to staying awake. Not everyone needs or wants to sleep straight after a meal.

As legroom said, pax are provided with eye shades!

I agree about sleeping with eye shades but the light reflecting on the TV screen is an annoying issue on both domestic and international flights in all cabins.
You asked if I keep the curtains closed at home during the day. The answer is no. But I also allow myself to put feet on the table or walk without a shirt on if I feel like, something I will never do on a plane. Unfortunately some pax think it's normal to behave in the same way on a plane as they do in their own home.
If people will be less selfish and more considerate to the comfort of others when sharing a public space, everyone will benefit eventually.

What the best seat(s) to choose in First class on A380?

Honestly, I wouldn't even think that the shade being up might bother others. Especially in the row behind me. For some who get travel sick then seeing the horizon might be important.

Re: What the best seat(s) to choose in First class on A380?

That's your opinion and you're entitled to have one.

Whether that's judged by others to be 'considerate' is another matter altogether.

As explained, some incl. I do feel 'bothered' by the excessive light interfering with the enjoyment of the entertainment screen one normally expected to have access to.

And, without the blinds being lowered, there is no other way to avoid the excessive lighting.

Please note that my discussion is limited to the QF F cabin as QF J screens are at the back of seats etc... etc....

BTW, where is the "horizon" at cruising altitude ?

I guess the more important answer might be, how would you respond if someone politely requested (or asked a FA to politely ask) you to lower the window shade?

Then I'd lower it.

Like I said, people seem to assume that others are doings things (or not doing things) because they are being selfish or inconsiderate. But it could simply be they are not aware, especially in the row behind them that it is creating an issue.

Not being aware of doing something wrong doesn't necessary makes it ok. I'm sure some people who put their feet on the bulkhead are not aware it makes others uncomfortable or those who talk loudly on their mobile in public places probably don't do it on purpose, they just don't care.

You can hardly see anything out of an F window anyway, its so far from the seat.

Sorry but I beg to differ. Putting feet where others eat is never ok in a public area. Talking loudly on a mobile phone is also generally recognised as a social taboo. Having the window shade up is just - well, leaving things as they are when you board. And at a guess other than regular flyers as on AFF then most wouldn't even think about it. Doesn't make them selfish or ignorant.
