Well, ultimately Earth is 4.5 billion years old, so that soil is a pup :mrgreen:.

Much much older than any winemakers or wine drinkers around.

The rock is abt 500 million years old; the soil would be since the last ice age and glacial retreat, about 20,000 years.

And the crust hardened about 4,000,000,000 million years ago, a bit before the Cambrian!

And ... no, ... go back to enjoying the wine .

It's a hard life.

I was willing to do a vertical tasting of the drinks menu...

Then I saw the Pinot Grigio.

Ended up tasting both Champagnes - had Dom first which I preferred (not unexpectedly).

Was paxing a bus home so decided not to partake in the Reds or Whites. LLB for palate cleanser.

This was a real surprise. I used to go through a bit of Rockford Black Shiraz, but got out of the habit, can't remember why. I had this last bottle - disgorged 1998 - lying about, but was aware that it had been leaking some time in the past. Unwilling to chuck it out, or open and be disappointed, it just stayed in the corner.

Finally, I was meeting up with friends who had shared BS (OK, that's true in most obvious senses) with me in the past; so if it was ruined, as it most certainly was, it wouldn't be a big deal.

When I got it out it had in fact leaked such that there was about 5cm space below the top foil. The cork was a black sticky mess and needed corkscrewing out. With a resigned air I poured a glass.

It was dead flat (of course) - but the colour was superb! I hesitatingly took a sip and .... not bad ... not bad at all!! :shock: No obvious cork taint. It had been chilled, so wasn't 'right', but as an example of a wine which should have been not good enough for spag bol, I reckon I could have served it (not chilled) late in an evening and few would have turned their noses up at it. (Well, probably more on this list than most, but you get my meaning.)

What I think has happened is that it had leaked, and the CO2 had filled the space; the bottle had re-sealed and just stayed inert under the CO2

(Please don't tell Robert O'Callaghan I actually tried a 'spoiled' bottle of his. I might get drummed out of the Stonewall Society.)

Had a glass of Silver Oak Cab Sav with dinner ( Californian Alexander Valley) and it reminded me of an Australian Cullen's Diana Madeline. It was $28 USD per glass with dinner at Ruth's Chris in Marina del Rey in California. Truly a very nice wine that you can have with a steak dinner.

It could, if one wasn' careful about having to get a bus home and it wasn't a work day today. I'm sure others who were there are a little more worse for wear - I only had 5 drinks in 3 hours, so very restrained

I think the $3mill includes 4,000 bottles of wine, so its a bargain, really. Just think, no more cartons under the desk.

I don't think I should send that link to my wife (she wants to move to Tassie) - the price would bankrupt me

I love the idea about the cartons under the desk...but it's on the way down now, as I'm drinking through them (and giving to clients).

Perhaps we'll do a drive by in June when we're there on holidays...
