Many thanks Mattg and JessicaTam - I have done one prior flight in a B787 in Y (the evening departure MEL-LAX) and was horribly uncomfortable for the whole trip but couldn't figure out why (or Y) apart from the seat cushion felt hard which I put down to the new plane so I was hoping that it was just a once off - but I will avoid the B787 and go via Sydney instead. There's no comparison - the A380 economy seats are vastly superior. Those 787 seats are way too narrow for comfort.
@JessicaTam has posted some thoughts on her Boeing 787 Y experience from LHR to PER that might be of interest: Madness: Last QF9 A380, First QF10 B787
The slim and height might help - I was bloody uncomfortable the entire way from MEL-LAX - did not matter which way I contorted myself I could not get comfortable so couldn't sleep so was very glad that it was an evening arrival into LAX. Being big enough to be described as Lurch with a Smile doesn't help!Interesting. +1 and self did JFK-LAX on the 789 followed by LAX-SYD on the A380. Much to my surprise I thought the 789 was superior! Maybe the better IFE and maybe a shorter flight. Maybe helped by both of us being quite slim and average height or less. Of course YMMV but there you are.
Every airline, other then JAL, has gone 9 across on the 787. An aircraft designed for 8 across.BTW have the other airlines flying B787's gone 9 seats to a row like QF or ?
I'm starting to get horrible visions that when QF retire the A380's and put 787's exclusively on the Oz East Coast to U.S. West Coast that a lot of us are going to have to catch the Project Sunrise A350's to New York and then back track across the U.S.Every airline, other then JAL, has gone 9 across on the 787. Or fly with another airline if you are flying YI'm starting to get horrible visions that when QF retire the A380's and put 787's exclusively on the Oz East Coast to U.S. West Coast that a lot of us are going to have to catch the Project Sunrise A350's to New York and then back track across the U.S.

Yeah, stupid me didn’t realise that a WP or SG could pick the PE seats for free and so flew Y MEL-BNE on the 787 and it was horrible. Definitely not something I would do long haul. Thankfully the next time we flew BNE-MEL I was aware of the seat selection perk and chose the PE seating which were excellent for a domestic flightI have only had 1 segment MEL-BNE in the 787 in Y and would try and avoid it in the future. The problem was the next 2 seats in the centre had real POS.I had to lean into the aisle so was hit by every trolley going past.
As long as the seats sell I think that will be unlikely!I wonder if anyone from QF is reading this feedback so as they understand that 9 across on the 787 is horrible and that they need to go to 8 across when they refresh the 787's?
Maybe they might realise that people are preferring the A380 over the 787 and do as was suggested - 8 to a row with a slightly smaller pitch - wouldn't need to shave much pitch off a row to fit another row in I would have thoughtAs long as the seats sell I think that will be unlikely!
