They get bad press and occasionally they get good press but, in my opinion, they're commitment to charity really does say wonderful things about the Australian spirit. I seem to recall they were very quick to lend a hand with returning Australians to Australia after the Bali bombings.

They do get some unwanted bad press at times, but they are always the first airline to dispatch a plane to bring home aussies. Look at Delhi last year..

Yes QF have always been fast to get a plane to return stranded Aussies.
Even in these tough times they can still give a 100k a thumbs up from me.

Especially users on this website love to bag Qantas. If this was a negative Qantas thread, it would be over 5 pages of replies.

Qantas is always fast to help out when there's a crisis.

Me thinks you mean Mumbai. Add Bangkok to the list too.

Well done to QF. And to Cricket Australia and players.....

My company (the Oz subsid anyway) with revenue about 25% of QF donated the same amount and are matching all contributions $ for $ by staff. Looks like people and corporates will be digging deep :)

It may have taken 1.5 years for your first post, but welcome to AFF Cabbage.

Agree with your comments. If QF jumped off a bridge, would DJ be expected to?

Just got this in an email.

REX TO OFFER AID TO THOSE AFFECTED BY RECENT BUSHFIRES Monday, 9 February 2009

In view of the recent bushfires that have left hundreds homeless, Regional Express (Rex) will be setting aside a fund of $200,000 in the form of air fares and other means to aid those affected by the bushfires. Charity groups and other organisations that are involved in relief efforts can apply for airfare assistance on the Rex website at In the Community :: Bush Fire Assistance Request Form.

Rex will also be organising a collection on board all flights and all monies donated will be matched dollar for dollar from the fund.

Regional Express (Rex) is Australia’s largest independent regional airline operating a fleet of 40 Saab 340 aircraft on more than 1,300 flights weekly to 24 destinations from Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide. The Rex Group comprises Regional Express, air freight and charter operator Pel-Air Aviation and Dubbo based regional airline Air Link, as well as the pilot academy Australian Airline Pilot Academy.

Nice one,Rex.:) Come on Rex passengers, dig deep !

Yes, indeed, I applaud Qantas for making this donation. I also applaud other companies, which have come forward with $1 million donations.

I believe I am right in saying (having checked on the Red Cross web site) that such donations are tax free thus offsetting 30% of the quoted figure assuming the donating company is in profit (others please feel free to correct).

Don't forget folks, that in the modern world, corporate donations are assessed against their intrinsic value to the donor in terms of enhancing brand and PR.

Please don't misunderstand my post, I am not knocking Qantas for their philanthropy, just attempting to put a little balance into the thread - their donation is one six thousandth (0.017%) of their expected 09 profit and greatly enhances their "Aussie Spirit" brand image through extensive media coverage.

That said, I am sure those affected will be very very grateful for all assistance, so congratulations to all companies and individuals who have contributed...

Yes you are right... my bad! Shouldn't post so late!!

Well done to Qantas too. And all the other companies donating too..

Now I like that type of donation from the corporates. :)

QF would do better to offer a similar amount to get people to Rex hubs.

I agree,I congratulate Qantas for their donation, but I also think that Rex is helping because the people affected by these fires are mainly in regional and rural areas so I am sure this offer will help those who need it most.
Rex doesn't get much exposure on AFF but I use them regularly and they are a decent airline.

I attended an interesting session about corporate donations. It is in fact a very dicey area. The directors are in theory spending the shareholder's money without their consent as this is not an operational cost and in theory the shareholders can better determine how or even if they make donations to charity and the directors should not make that decision for them.

Although I do applaud QF for doing this I think it is a bit weak in terms of $ amount given how australian (if not country australian) QF deems themselves to be...

Many companies budget for these sort of donations. I'll be interested to see, when I go back to work tomorrow, what my company has donated. They are often quite generous when it comes to these sort of situations.

I was thinking more along the lines of $250,000 but don't really know the details of their inner workings at the moment.
