Yes, indeed, I applaud Qantas for making this donation. I also applaud other companies, which have come forward with $1 million donations.
I believe I am right in saying (having checked on the Red Cross web site) that such donations are tax free thus offsetting 30% of the quoted figure assuming the donating company is in profit (others please feel free to correct).
Don't forget folks, that in the modern world, corporate donations are assessed against their intrinsic value to the donor in terms of enhancing brand and PR.
Please don't misunderstand my post, I am not knocking Qantas for their philanthropy, just attempting to put a little balance into the thread - their donation is one six thousandth (0.017%) of their expected 09 profit and greatly enhances their "Aussie Spirit" brand image through extensive media coverage.
That said, I am sure those affected will be very very grateful for all assistance, so congratulations to all companies and individuals who have contributed...
