Alitalia to shut down on October 15 2021

Looks like it's all over for Alitalia...although a new state backed airline with replace it (Italia Trasporto Aereo) using many of their assets

Ah used to love the short internal flights in Italy on Alitalia. The pilots flew the planes like they were in a small acrobatic airplane. An one never checked luggage if possible since it would take 90 mins to appear at Fumicino or Bologna!

Oh well, can no longer say as ex SQ and Varig staff member. AZ ' Always late in transit always late in arrival' ( get it) flew a few long haul to Europe snd within amazed at why Pax all clapped when landing. (omen?) one of first carriers to have pastel colours to keep you calm. Still always sad to see a carrier go. Even the Popes usage couldnt save them. Think the new name wont do better. Its really only a change name. Less the debt. Sad as only 1 European carrier still serves AU. BA and only SYD unless they have gone??? Dont use them am a QF or JQ Man unless no option All code share , not the same. Flew once Mel/BKK/FCO. stopped in BKK. Then saw same pilot smoking heavily and bloodshot eyes at airport. He looked more nervous than me. Once from SIN/MEl saw a large ammount of fluid on port wing, called attendent who looked and said Oh , thats interesting.. Still we got there. I liked the DC10/MD11. Arrivivederci AZ RIP. At least you were fun and entertaining. Pls do not critisise my typos.

Have updated my photo caption. Also agree sad when a carrier, especially an old timer, doesn't make it however this one should be no surprise to anyone, have been on verge of closing for as long as I can remember.

The only partnership announcement from
velocity is another partner dying off 😂
Apart from the 'new'/expanded Air Canada announcement at the start of the year (the only confirmed partner at this point in time)

ITA is now running a status match promo:

I'm eligible for it via United status, so seriously considering it in case ITA joins SkyTeam or in case something useful comes of it...

Looks like Qantas hasn't got the memo. Spotted this today with Alitalia still listed as the operating carrier. It seems ITA having taken the AZ code is confuing the QF website but it's also impressive that QF already has built in the ability to sell ITA tickets.
