Haven't thought of duty free discounts before - this thread has got my attention, thats for sure.

The only discounts I have are the back of Duty Free reciepts offereing a small discount next time coming thorough, like 5% or so.

Are there any other coupons available ex SYD currently? Doing SYD - NAN 14th April then NAN - SYD 22nd April.

Would be great to get a few extra dollars off the regular duty free prices.

TIA!

As I posted earlier in the thread.

Promotion code SAC105399 is still valid this month giving $10 discount if ordering online and purchasing >$100.

Not sure if you are going to find better discounts than that around....

If you're travelling back to LAX I would eocmmend getting your Alcohol over there.

I bought a coupl eof bottle of famous grouse which ended up costing me $38 AUD where in Syd i thinkt eh going rate is $52.

I think the JW Black was also a reasonable amount cheaper, but was feeling a bit broked after my month holiday :(

FWIW, I usually find buying booze in Japan cheaper due to their liquor licensing being cheaper that Oz anyways.

I didn't find Japan overly cheap, even though the rate was 105 Yen to 1 AUD when I was there; maybe I was just looking in the wrong place:?:

I am not sure if this helps, but when I went to Malaysia I bought an Ipod Touch here

and got reimbursed the GST at the aiport

same with a camera

this was good as I got to haggle at any store I liked

At the time the duty free store had them for $318 (GST free), and I got mine for $300 (with GST), which then was given back

no problems at melbourne airport, just rocked up with the reciepts and it was all done quickly

added benefit was that I had time to load on movies etc for the flight

Natt

i second buying electronics and perfume from a normal shop and ten claiming the GST back.

Since the introduction of the GST the only thing worth buying at duty free are cigs & alcohol.

Lets hope we don't follow the EU where they start to kill that off for their citizens

I paid ¥7500 for a bottle of Chivas Royal Salute at a duty free shop in Narita. Used to buy it in the neighbourhood liquor store for about ¥8000 (in the middle of nowhere, mind).

This site has it for $279.

I used to pay ¥1800 for a bottle of Bombay Sapphire. Never paid under $40-45ish for it in Australia.

I am heading off to KL at the end of the month. Is it worth buying a MacBook Pro 13" duty free (normal RRP $1900) or just buy it using the Apple Education Discount ($1750). The other option I am guessing is to look in KL

I am the only one going away so it does go over the top of my $900 Duty Free allowance

When I said ¥1800 and never less than $40-45 in Australia, I was referring to regular retail. Even buying spirits in a regular liquor store in Japan is cheaper than Australian duty free!

I believe that's because they have no tax on alcohol...?

I agree with you. A bottle of 1L Dimple scotch is $59.99 at SYD Tax and Duty Free. One can buy 700mL Dimple scotch from a supermarket in Greece for €20, ~AUD36 (equivalent 1L Dimple scotch for ~€28.50, ~AUD52) which is cheaper than our duty free.

Personally I feel Australia taxes alcohol, tobacco and pokie machines too heavily. Perhaps we need a revision of these taxes and replace the lost tax revenue by taxing theatre, ballet and opera just as heavily.

OZ excise on booze over 10% (other than "Brandy") is ~$70 per litre of alcohol.

So that 1 litre bottle of spirit with 40% Alcohol/volume has excise of $28 plus $2.80 GST on the excise. Now add the actual cost of the product and GST on that and you are getting there.

Will be transitting through London to Paris. Is it worthwhile purchasing alcohol at London Heathrow duty free.

Maybe that's why KRudd is swanning about overseas all the time - just getting cheap booze. Reckon he earns miles for it too? ;)
