Hi~ newbie here~

I have several questions here:

I've just recently bought a camera from JRduty free on the 19th of June, however, because I'm flying on 22nd of July 12: 30AM, I cannot collect my camera until its 30-days before my flight. So, on 23rd of June, I brought my passport and itinerary to the store and collected it and now I just realize, there's date & time stated on the docket "June 19". So, my question is, when I go through the custom, won't this be a problem? As it would seems like I've already collected my duty free camera 30days before my flight.

Question 2:
When I purchased my camera, the store were about the close, and I wasn't given a chance to check if my camera is OK. It'll be very disappointing if there's anything wrong with it, so, does anyone think is OK to go back and ask to unsealed it and allow me to check the camera??

Question 3: Idiot me, I just realized that since I got my camera exactly 30 days before my flight, if my flight is delayed by one day..I'm doomed. What can happen and what can I do bout' this??

Please help~~~~my questions may sound stupid, but I have never bought any duty free things before..please help me~much appreciated~

You need to present them in person. They still are valid for 20% off tobacco as this is specially stated on them. (Note a carton of 250 Winnies Jumped $8 to $58 since the excise changes last month - pure profiteering (but, hey, that's business).
Well unfortunately the extremely rude, and uncaring, cashier decided that the vouchers were no longer valid and would not give me the 20% discount on tobacco as stated on the voucher.

Extremely poor customer service and I will be sending an email to FIRST Tax and Duty Free demanding 20% discount from my purchase and a reasonable explanation on why I should continue to shop with them in future.

By the way I found them much more expensive, even with 20% discount, than stores in SIN, HKG and BKK. And there is now a 1% surcharge if paying by credit card.

- A bottle of Smirnoff Vodka was ~AUD23 in Australia, ~SGD17 (~AUD16) in SIN and ~AUD18 in BKK.
- On my return I had purchased 2 1L bottles of Bombay Sapphire in SIN for SGD56 (~AUD47) and received a 200mL bottle for free. In MEL the 2 1L bottles of Bombay Sapphire were on special for AUD62 (normally ~AUD34 each) and who knows if the cashier from hell would have given the discount as it states on the Skybus voucher no discount on sale items.

If only I can find Champion Ruby tobacco overseas I will not be using Australian duty free stores again....

I don't bother buying tobacco from 1st any more (nor much else really).

When the excise was increase last month a carton if Winfield blues went from $49.95 to $57.95 - and they do not even pay excise.

Yesterdays I ordered same for collection on departure next Month from New Zealand (Duty Free Stores New Zealand - Free delivery to all Airports) at a cost of NZD48.90 (~AUD40)

Just wondering why you chose to purchase the camera "Duty Free" from a retailer? Under the Tourist Refund Scheme (TRS) offered by Australian Customs and Border Protection Service at all Australian International Airports? Under the TRS, you purchase the goods you want from any retailer and pay the price including GST to the retailer. Then when departing within 30 days of the purchase, take the good and the tax invoice to the TRS desk airside at the airport and they reimburse the GST amount to you.

The benefit is that you can use the good for the 30 days before departure - no need for it to be sealed until you get to the airport. And you can choose to purchase from any retailer in Australia so better opportunity to negotiate a better price or buy the item you want on special somewhere.

In my opinion, the days of buying "duty-free" before the airport are long gone. There are very few items in Australia that still have any import duty applied (alcohol, tobacco, perfume seem to be about the only common items), so for electronic good, including cameras, its only GST that you save by purchasing "Duty Free", and you can get that back under the TRS anyway. Of course, retailers that offer "duty-free" sales of items like cameras are unlikely to tell you about the TRS because then you might go and try to find another retailer selling the same item cheaper.

Hi~ thanks for replying..well..I've got myself a WX1 sony and check the price in quiet a few places..the cheapest I can get is $399..and so even with TRS..which usually is 10% GST? It's $360.
and in the JR duty free shop..there was sales the other day..and I ended up paying $304 only~~ so..I bought it.

I think I would have asked them for the same base price and to charge me the GST. Then I could have the camera to use for the month before the flight and claimed the GST back at the airport.

I have no experience with this crowd, but seems like a good price. Though seems its shipped from OS so no GST paid so no TRS refund.
