Did crikey get permission to reproduce the dying roo?
Apparently so.

There seems to be a lot of cynicism with this offer. However you can find info about EK pilots and their issues as well

Maybe I am missing something, but I think it is a fantastic idea.
Many forward thinking companies allow their serving staff to take gap year/s. Companies tend to to it at 5 and 10 years, but it varies. Would you rather lose a staff member (and their knowledge) permanently because they want to see if the grass really is greener or they think they want a sea change or perhaps want to try something or someone else? Or would you rather let your staff sow their oats, so to speak, with the knowledge they can return. Granted it sometimes isn't to the same exact task/position - things change. But to me this makes perfect sense. Also, if someone does decide that the grass really is greener, then you have had x period of time to have got their replacement up to scratch.
As for Qantas assisting Emirates, nepotism is rife in most specialised industries (like mine) - what goes around comes around and everyone feeds eachother.

What permission do they need?

Where did Crack-ey get its lead?

In short, I'm confused.

Taezer, I think (from what I can read) the skepticism comes from the fact that there are people who believe it is a way to avoid paying redundancy payments.
I don't have the knowledge to comment on it though.

Apologies for posting a duplicate thread :-|

So folks the writing is well and truly on the wall for QF Int'l. This is simply a mechanism to avoid even offering VR payments:!:

I've said it once and I'll say it again, Alan Joyce is not fit for the role is he in!

Does Joyce have a deathwish for QF?
The simple answer to this is YES. A national disgrace running a national icon. A combo that doesn't work!

So if the issue is that it allows him to avoid voluntary redundancy payments... all he's doing is saving the airline money! That's not something to be critical of him in operating a business - except of course if you're a pilot wanting voluntary redundancy.

Reading the story it says the leave is part of the pilot's agreements, so apparently something they want in their agreement, the flexibility to work elsewhere. He's found a way that takes advantage of an agreement that normally favours pilots, by inviting them to take it up.

Really, it sounds like some pilots hoping for a payout twisting it into something worse than it is, for their own advantage. It's certainly consistent with past actions.

Is there no champion on the board of Qantas who will try to stop the rot?

OK, we get it, you made the wrong call on JB, but don't cut your nose to spite your face. There are some rally good candidates out there for the top job, not least of which is running Air Berlin.

6 more months of this rubbish and QF won't be able to be saved.

As a direct and indirect shareholder in QF - I welcome any initiatives to increase the profitability of QF. If forum members are serious about changing management within QF, I suggest they buy some shares and vote at the AGM!

Else stop whining and fly another airline.

Well YQY,

You are about to discover via your hip pocket, that you cannot cost-cut your way to success.

Obviously I fly other airlines, we all do. Thank you though for making my point.

How are you enjoying that share price and those dividends? Seems like management is working wonders for the shareholders already.

Why does everybody seem to think any change to Qantas is a bad thing?

The negativity in this forum, particularly towards Qantas has increased considerably over the past few month or two.

It's really disappointing to be honest.

I agree with you Tae. This is great a great experience, it's completely optional, I'm sure some pilots would jump at the chance to live overseas for a while. I know I would.

The naivety of the above 2 posts is breathtaking.
Would you "jump at the chance to live overseas for a while" if upon your return your airline had relocated to Singapore and your employer was not obliged to either re-hire you, nor pay out your redundancy.

I'm guessing you are one of the throng that believe that Rupert's decision to close News of the World was a noble, rather than a fiscal act.

Isn't that assuming the worst in people? At what point in time, has a Qantas pilot in the past been made redundant after returning from an overseas exchange?

Where is it written, that Qantas is going to make your job redundant while you are gone? That is an assumption, a very pessimistic assumption.

You only have to observe Joyce's mantra to know where things are headed. Down the gurgler (unless you're a JQ driver)

That's exactly what I'm talking about. You don't know what is going to happen, nobody does. But everybody is assuming because Joyce is involved there will be cutbacks, and outsourcing.

It all seems very pessimistic to me. Have a little faith.
