Charge for Lounge Access...Would you pay to be someone's guest?

What do other members think of this: Recently I was travelling with a friend who has access to an airport lounge. The friend invited me to come in and I accepted. About a week later that friend asked that I pay them money for using the lounge as their guest because it had "cost them money".

This could happen in something like priority pass where taking a guest can end up being charged back. You find out when you get your credit card statement.

Really it depends on the nature of your friendship, but I think its a bit rich. Certainly you should have been told beforehand.

I'd reconsider associating with a friend like this.

Now if they did guest you in with a priority pass and there was a charge then they should have told you beforehand and asked if you wanted to cover their costs. I consider it to be extremely rude to seek payment later.

What a friend! Unless is is like a priority one as suggested by other replies, there is no cost, you are allowed to take one guest in with you in Qantas anyway

This happened to us in DFW using 'The Lounge at DFW' on Priority Pass. My SO signed a chit however there was no dollar amount on it like you would expect to see on a normal credit card transaction & we thought this was just part of the procedure to sign me in as a guest. We definitely were not told it would cost US27.00 for me to get access. We had already used the United Lounge in LAS using PP & were not charged there so didn't think it would be different elsewhere.

We couldn't use Admirals Club as we were both NB at the time & although travelling in F on AA this doesn't permit you access to their lounge. My SO has an Amex Platinum which should have given us access however as it was a replacement card because it didn't look like the usual Platinum Card we were denied entry to the AA lounge.

I would agree with what seems to be the consensus here - not cool. If a friend had told me beforehand that there would be a fee but we agreed we wanted to sit together in the lounge, I'd offer to buy the friend dinner next time we see each other.

If the friend came to me later and said they'd been charged unexpectedly, then I would expect that we would laugh at it together and then I'd buy them a coffee and call it even stevens.

I'm guessing it was via the Priority Pass. Some lounges don't charge for an extra guest and some do. I've guested people before using mine and just wear the charge if it comes (sometimes it doesn't). I've never told them it has cost me anything (mind you i don't often use it so i don't mind it occasionally)

If you are travelling in business class lounge access is part of the deal. No need to buy lounge access.

This friend was a member of a frequent flyer programme and had gained Lounge access through flight status points so it did not cost them anything to invite me in. In the friend's mind it had cost them money because they had taken more flights then me which lead them to gaining lounge access status.
This happenend in Australia and I do not consider this a friend anymore.

To guest someone into a lounge, irrespective of what the cost (if any) then that person should accept the costs associated with that invitation. It would be just like asking someone out for business lunch/dinner and then at the end asking them to pay for the cost of doing so, or their share of the bill. However, in this situation as I understand it, there was no cost to your former friend so the term W*** doesn't even come close.

Gee what a wanker, absolutely take this person off your Christmas card list.
I personally love taking friends into lounges, I don't care that I only have lounge access because I fly more \ have paid for the privilege and they are technically getting access for "free". It hasn't cost me a cent extra to take them along, and another way of looking at it is if you don't take a friend in a guest spot, that guest spot goes to waste (which is why every so often I've invited random travelers in with me)
