Virgin Dominates Qantas in Domestic Market

As pointed out on another site, the Qantas figures exclude QantasLink (as well as Jetstar)

Qantas Press Release issued today:

QANTAS CORRECTS AAP MISREPORTING ON PASSENGER NUMBERS
SYDNEY, 5 July 2012: [FONT=Arial,Arial][FONT=Arial,Arial]Australian Associated Press (AAP) incorrectly reported yesterday that Virgin Australia carried more Australian domestic passengers in the year to May 2012 than Qantas.
The AAP story was reprinted in the Daily Telegraph, Australian Financial Review and several news websites. It was also incorrectly reported on a number of radio stations.
Qantas, including its regional domestic airline QantasLink, carried 20.25 million passengers over that period.
In addition to the 20.25 million domestic Qantas flyers, the Qantas Group's low fares airline Jetstar carried 9.84 million passengers.
Virgin Australia (including its regional domestic flying) carried 15.53 million passengers.
More Australians continue to fly with Qantas than with any other domestic airline.
Qantas and Jetstar remain the number one and two most profitable domestic airlines in Australia.

It is not valid to include Jetstar in your numbers. Qantas and Jetstar front line staff enjoying telling us, the customer, that they're completely separate airlines when it comes to basics like interlining. No point claiming they are the same airline when it come to passenger numbers.

It never stated that Jetstar and Qantas are the same airline, Jetstar is part of the 'Qantas Group'.

Another way to look at it

Virgin numbers increased 10.1% for May 2012 vs May 2011 or 5.5% YTD
Qantas numbers decreased 1.8% for May 2012 vs May 2011 or 1.8% YTD

However, Qantas link did increase 6% and 6.8% respectively

It would be interesting to see if DJ included SkyWest operated ATR flights in the figures. They are only a small percentage at the moment... however it would make their claim a little more valid if they were excluded and they're just making a direct Virgin Australia v Qantas Airways (domestic) comp.

I agree with TheInsider on this one. It quite clearly states in addition to the QF numbers.

I beleive the ATR figures are excluded, purely operating flight figures.

Just mentioning Jetstar is a misrepresentation that is clearly designed to make Jetstar inclusive with Qantas, under the Qantas group banner. As such my point stands, Jetstar is a completely separate airline as I'm sure is said by CSA multiple times everyday.

We might also care to remember Alan Joyce pronouncements that 18% of passengers leave Australia on Qantas. I don't recall him saying 'in addition 9% leave on Jetstar'.

You mean the Qantas Group?

Last time I checked, they were part of the Qantas Group.

If the comparison was made with qantas group it might be relevant. It wasn't and so it isn't.

Oh to be clear I wrote qantas and I mean qantas. They are trying to associate Jetstar with qantas by using the term qantas group. It is complete bollocks to do so.

+1 the numbers are pretty clear as is the ownership!

Ok so how are Jetstar numbers relevant to qantas airline? Why didn't we hear about passengers leaving Australia on Jetstar last year, if they are so relevant? Ignore the company spin in the message if you like, but that doesn't mean you need to try to invalidate my opinion about the marketing spin.

 I happen to agree with some other posters.......not sure how that can be interrupted as invalidating yours or anyone else's opinion:confused:

When it suits. ;)
I think the Nett of it is Virgin is being very succesfull luring the business traveller.
As a long time interstater , two or three years ago you rarely saw suits on virgin flights,Now they clutter the aisles folding their jackets
As for the lounges they were peaceful now they are packed most of the time.

Qantas+Qantaslink beats DJ, i think Qantaslink is basically Qantas and it's fair to include those 2 carriers in the total figures, so they are quite far ahead of DJ still.

It is a side point. IMO your point would hold some water if they stated QFd carried x JQ carried Y for a combined total of x + y.

They have not done so.
