Re: 2015 in review

With two flights to go before the end of the year, I will manage 62 flights/51309 miles all up.

New airlines: QR
New airports: HAN
New country: Vietnam

Just scraped back into HH Diamond. An extended trip to Asia helped. Which leads me to my other first for this year - I avoided two bomb blasts in BKK by no more than 10 minutes. Happy for that to be the only time that ever happens. :/

Re: 2015 in review

Next year is going to be a quiet year for flying for me, have nothing planned or booked for work and no holiday leave left.

This year has seen family holidays to US, Canada, Broome and NZ and work taking me to China

So new airports I can add to my travels for the year include

Shenzhen
Shanghai
LAX
LAS
LGA
and
Broome

To close the year off will include AKL next week

Re: 2015 in review

I could give you my numbers but apparently the QF site is having issues with "view activity statement"

Re: 2015 in review

92 flights for me this year
I added China and USA to countries visited
I added LAX, PEK, SHA and SZX airports
I flew China Eastern, Emirates and Dragonair for the first time.
I flew F for the first time - SYD to BNE
I flew in an A380 for the first time
I had 35 successful upgrades From 36 requests
98,351 miles flown
10d, 16h and 50 minutes in a metal tube

edit, I would also like to mention that I managed to get too about 10 AFF dinner / drinks meet ups in 5 states

(oh and I bought way too much wine.)

35 Segments
113194 miles
1560 SC

37% J
57% Y
2.9% Y+
2.9% F

Trips have been to:
- Cupertino
- London & Sweden*
- Paris
- Auckland x 2
- Pittsburgh*
- Nadi
- Tokyo
- Sapporo*
- Melbourne

* Somewhere new

I think my favourite trip was to London and Sweden. Flew SYD-DXB with an 8 hour layover, then DXB-ARN with a 3 hour layover, then ARN-LHR, then got a hire car and managed not to crash it. Then had a big night with a mate. Then back to Sweden for work on Monday.

Re: 2015 in review

Less activity this year than the previous two.

185,000 km; 74 segments
33 airports, 15 countries, 15 carriers
New countries: Azerbaijan, Georgia, Ecuador

Best experiences:
EY apartment SYD-AUH
Galapagos Islands cruise

Worst experience:
Nothing worth mentioning

Re: 2015 in review

32 flights, including my first 'real' flights at the pointy end, including international J on QR, CX, AY; domestic J on VA and the new QF A330 and F on the new AA A319.

New Airlines: QR, CX, AY, SQ, BA, 5J
New Aircraft: A319, B777-300ER, B777-200LR, ERJ-175
New Airports: SYD, MNL, BCD, DOH, IAH, ATL, AUS, IND, LHR, BHD, HKG, BDL

Winners of my year's:
Best international flight: QR901 PER-DOH, J; Best international lounge: QR LHR T4
Best domestic flight: MEL-PER, QF A330 (new) J; Best domestic lounge: VA MEL

Two upgrades from 3 requests!

Next year will hopefully see some new countries in Asia, a warm week on a beach, maybe a trip back to the Philippines and no cancelled flights due to winter in the Northern Hemisphere.

Re: 2015 in review

So with 2 flights left, my tally this year is:
83 segments
167,747 miles
15 days 16:14 in metal (or composite) tubes

New airport:
Surprisingly it is ORY! Somehow I always traveled through CDG. Gave me the opportunity to visit the new OpenSkies (BA) lounge at ORY.

Travel anecdote of the year:
I was no show on QF10 due to fog in LHR and delayed BA connecting flight. Somehow my TA had booked separate tickets in one PNR. BA told me to get lost. I called QF from the BA F lounge and they waived the no show fee, waived the fare difference and gave me the last Y seat available on QF2 booking in "Y". Thank you QF!

Re: 2015 in review

First time round the world
plus crossed Taipei 101 off the bucket list

Re: 2015 in review

55 flights, 19 int 36 dom, 68200miles, all for work
New airlines: MH
New airports: BPN, DXB, MAN, KUL, LRE, EMD

1st experience of business on MH getting an upgrade from KUL-SYD. Successful upgrade requests to J on QF SYD-DXB, and QF CGK-SYD. EK upgrade to J for DXB-MAN.

Best experience was J on QF1, also my first A380 flight. Best airport was BPN. Best lounge was REP as it was literally a private lounge, unlike the bustling QP in SIN. Worst experience was Y on EK DXB-SYD after missing connection to QF2 in J.

Re-qualified for Le Club Gold thanks to Meeting Planner.

Re: 2015 in review

I'm not usually a big fan of these sort of threads, but 2015 was, without doubt, a most interesting year of flying for me. It was the beginning of simpler and fairer and a move away from QF. (Incidentally I love QF, have truly enjoyed the benefits of P1, and am saddened that I could not make simpler and fairer work for me. :( )

Twelve new airports for me: DDG, WEH, ARN, TAO, ICN, SNN, LCY, DUB, PHX, OSL, CMB and MCY.

Two new airlines: UL, and US.

I flew "Babybus" from LCY to JFK, clearing customs at SNN. Highly recommended.

JQ "J" MEL-BKK was nowhere near as bad as I thought it might be.

The world outside of QF did not prove as scary as I thought it might be with the UL A330 J cabin being a wonderful surprise.

Despite a move away from QF I was still within 5k miles of 2014's QF flights. (BA Codeshares helped.)

My numbers pale into insignificance when compared to many here so I won't post. I don't consider myself a frequent flyer and take my hat off to those regular domestic commuters and long haul Y flyers - they are the real FF's.

Perhaps my biggest take this year was beginning to understand that not all frequent flyer points are equal, and Avios are proving almost twice as valuable as QFF points.

2015 was the first year that I flew more miles in an A330 then any other aircraft.

Re: 2015 in review

  • Went to Singapore for the first time since I was 1
  • New airline: Scoot (family was paying for it!) - surprisingly good for the price, and better options for legroom than many full service carriers! (I'm 190cm+, this is particularly important to me...) Was also my first time on a B787 Dreamliner!
  • New country: Indonesia - took a ferry from SG and spent a few nights in Batam
  • Had a single day going ID -> SG -> MY -> SG, thus setting my current personal best of 6 passport stamps in one day
  • Conference + leisure trip to WLG, which was fantastic as usual
  • Other than that - the usual domestic flying for a few work trips and visiting family
  • Lost my QF PS status - if only my anniversary date was a month later... it's been 2 weeks into the new membership year and I'm already a quarter of the way back to gaining status...
  • Spent a night at the SYD Rydges at QF's expense, courtesy of flight delays (this is only the second time this has happened to me, I'm not that frequent a flyer evidently...) I didn't mind as it was a nice upgrade from the Airbnb I'd been staying in over in WLG, and also somewhat nicer than my apartment... thankfully, my workplace has flexible working hours so they didn't mind if I was still on a plane at 9am the next day...
  • Managed to get QF to fix an issue I'd identified for them. Won't go into specifics, but Red Roo was helpful in directing me to the relevant people inside QF, so thanks RR!

Re: 2015 in review

137,647 miles and 53 segments... all in Y! Mostly spent my time in VA 73Hs and SQ 333s/77Ws.

New airlines: LH, OS, TY and VN
New airports: AMS, BRU, CMB, DAD, DAR, FRA, HAN, HKG, IST, MLE, SGN, SOF and VIE

A great year of travel to new and not-as-bad-as-I-feared locations but 24 hours in Amsterdam in June and 72 hours at the Conrad Hong Kong were by far and away the high points.

Low points were 4 hours on the tarmac in AUH, exhausting the variety of SQ's vegetarian meals (hello cheese and tomato roll, fancy seeing you again) and a tiny room combined with no status recognition and miserable staff (at London prices) at Hilton London Kensington.

Re: 2015 in review

I've been waiting for this thread!!

So I upped my travel from last year even if I changed positions that put a dent in my travel. Not quite the level that others around here do but enough to make VA WP so I am happy.

Flights: 36 - 26 VA 4 SQ 4 HA 1 TG 1 PG
81% Work related by flights
74% Work related by distance

BIS: 67,121 km (1.67 laps)
4 days 6:38
Days away: 60 (that actually surprised me!)

Airports: 12, 5 New - BNE MEL SYD SIN BKK DRW HNL* ADL* CNS KBV* OGG* NTL* (*=new)
Most popular: BNE-MEL.
Including land, 19 cities visited.

Planes
Boeing 737 25
Airbus A330 5
Airbus A320 2
Boeing 717 2 - New aircraft for me
Embraer E190 1
Boeing 777 1

Most common being a tie between VH-VUC and VH-VUI

Highlights: Work trip to Hawaii that I extended and relaxed on. Driving a Red Convertible Mustang around Hawaii being a delinquent. Also my Leisure trip to Thailand
Lowlight: Having never missed a flight before then, Missing 2 flights in one day (KVB-BKK & SIN-BNE) and was a laughing stock at work when I got home (seeing as I work in the travel industry). Also the tomato salsa dip on VA I have seen several full rows say no thanks to it haha!

Worst hangover: OGG-HNL (sat in the last row next to the engine in a 717 and slept like a log)

Next Year? Already booked 9 legs booked between now and Easter.

I avoided two bomb blasts in BKK by no more than 10 minutes. Happy for that to be the only time that ever happens. :/

I was also in BKK for this - wasn't an awesome start to my only pure leisure trip for the year, however we still partied like we were trying to outdo the hangover movie :D

Re: 2015 in review

By the end of this year I will have 118 flights for the year.

Managed 5 trips to Thailand and the highlight by far was getting married on one of those trips. SIN lounge crawl was memorable and also a HKG lounge crawl with the wife last month.

Flew 787 (TG business) for the first time, QF 747 First class (business class service) for the first time, EK A380 (business class) for the first time. I don't think there were any new airports or carriers this year.

The early forecast is more of the same next year with 39 flights already booked.

Re: 2015 in review

We don't travel for work but this year I took my husband, who in a past life must have been a roadie or muso, to Jimi Hendrix's grave in Seattle plus a few other places significant to Hendrix and then he got in touch with is hippy side in SF followed by the Fender Guitar factory to pick up his custom Strat. I rock as a wife :) And we went to Darwin for the first time and I want to move there.

Best experience: A Darwin sunset - I could watch a hundred of them.

Worst: VA "J" seats long haul - I repeat, I would happily torch them when they get replaced this year.

Up coming: Cambodia so hubby can take photos and be Lara Croft, NZ/Wellington for the Bledisloe, and thinking of flying to Perth on Christmas day... because we can and I have to start planning our next trip, thinking South Utah/North Arizona or Moscow.

Oh and flew VX for the first time - highly recommended even without a lounge and was able to utilise the VA Hilton Diamond offer and scored a couple of suite upgrades.
