Re: 2015 in review

2015 was all self-funded flying, as my firm has had a far from stellar year. But I also managed 18 segments for 31,292miles, tried several new carriers and visited some very interesting places for the first time.

New carriers: AY, AF, OS
New ports: HEL, VIE, ATH
Highlights: Athens, going off to sleep with a view of the Acropolis out of the hotel window; a Mozart and Strauss night in Vienna; a visit to several ancient sites (Ephesus and Knossos).
FF: Made QF SG for the fist time this year with SCs mainly earned on AY.

Re: 2015 in review

Wow - some seriously big numbers on the thread!

This year saw a long weekend over in New Caledonia which was a real eye opener. A real little piece of France so close to BNE :)

The annual Eurotrash trip saw new airport in Gdansk rest of trip were familar haunts.

USA trip saw new airports - SFO, BTR, LVS and MYS. Highlight of trip was watching a 49ers game in a corporate box with free access to the lower level bars and restaurants. That big hole in the ground outside Vegas was a close second :)

First trip in a QF A380 and somehow managed a upgrade to Business :) Spent close to the first 5 hours in the little lounge at the front meeting new friends - a great experience.

Re: 2015 in review

The FF highlight was the EWR-HKG-PER on CX in J (Classic Award) and another use of The Wing F Lounge very early in the year on the long awaited Xmas trip to Philly.

Outside of that 3 PER-SYD returns and two PER-TSV returns as I continue the slide from WP down to LTS. Change in jobs (involuntary) meant the work related flying virtually dried up. Will probably not renew my QP membership when required (2nd half of 2016) as it won't prove to be value for money given LTS will provide two passes as will the ANZ QF Black Card.

Re: 2015 in review

I have to take my hat off to the "plane residents" we have on board here. So much time in the air - you'd be about 0.00001 seconds younger than the rest of us on earth.

Only Australian ports visited this year: TSV, BNE, ADL, MEL - quite a quiet year on that front.

On the holiday front it was a big year doing two trips with three weeks on the South Island of NZ in January which made me think of moving somewhere near Nelson in retirement in about 15 years.

The big double significant birthday and 20th anniversary trip with the family to Canada and USA was huge. Visited the rels in YVR then off to New York for my first ever visit on my (at least) 12th visit to the USA. Then Orlando for the fun parks and Kennedy Space Center. All over too quickly but it made winter go by a bit faster with three weeks of 30-36C weather.

New airports: EWR and LGA - managed to avoid JFK.

No idea of the km flown or sectors etc. Requalified as SG on VA. Didn't fly a single QF sector but remain LTS.

Next year sees a trip to Nelson again to do the Heaphy Track (see other thread). In October I've got a conference in Seattle so that will occasion another visit to YVR as well. Want to take the family to Japan later in the year but haven't worked out a points way yet that doesn't take half the holiday to get there and back. Looks like could be ANA.

Re: 2015 in review

Gday

After a 50 hour Y trip back from the World Cup in Brasil in 2014 i told the wife that i am done with economy. She didn't believe me. Well 2015 turned out like this (all self funded holiday travel):

JL F
JL J
DL J
MI J
SQ J
MH J

I loved it, she loved it, big grins all round. Huge thanks to the community on this board who pointed me in the right direction to build my knowledge.

2016 will be quieter due to no annual leave and budget constraints but still have one last US Airways Dividend Miles(RIP) trip to Japan and Guam coming up in March/April.

Thanks again to the contributors on this website.

Pele.

I didn't know this!

Re: 2015 in review

OK, I've just done a rough tally and I've happily fallen short of my expectation.

Stats (I think):

Sectors - 106
Days at home - 100
Days away - 265
New airports: AUH, KOM, TIZ, CMB, MLE and VAM (Ok so, VAM is a bit of a tall tale, but it was really Rangali that is close to VAM but doesn't have a code as far as I know)
New airlines: TMA, EY, UL,
Aircraft types: 738, E-190, Twotter, A320, A330, 777, ATR-42, Bell 206, Bell 407, Bell 212.
Miles flown: No idea
Hours in air: No idea

Three flights left this year (I hope )

Re: 2015 in review

I didn't have the volume of some others, but I managed to hit a few achievements/high points.

May
Airline: QANTAS
Planes: 737 (3 older ones, 1 refitted one)
Route: PER-ADL-SYD and back
Work/career development related trip to Sydney for CeBIT. It was very insightful to see where east coast IT is in relation to Perth. Got to see ANZ stadium and the surrounding areas. Managed to hit gold status in the process by routing through Adelaide.

November
Airlines: QANTAS, American Airlines, Alaska Airlines
Planes: A330, A380, A321, 737
Route: PER-SYD-LAX-ORD-PDX-LAX-SYD-PER
Holiday. This trip was the full realised use of the knowledge I've learned from this site and all the very helpful people on it. Because of that I was able to get the airfares at very good prices, get an upgrade to first class on the international flights and pick better seats when blocked seats were opened. Things I saw: California Science Center, Dreihaus Museum, Shedd Aquarium, Skydeck Chicago.

Re: 2015 in review

With one flight to go a Brisbane to Perth on Qantas I will have been on 40 flights for a total of 52,290 Miles in 2015.

Brisbane to Melbourne and Brisbane to Perth each with 12 flights was equally my most popular route, I was able to score 1A 5 times, and row 13 was my most popular seating row being exit row.

The airline numbers were Qantas 19, Virgin Australia, 16, Emirates 2 and Jetstar and Air New Zealand with 1 each, and with the 737-800 the most popular type.

2 overseas trips both to New Zealand, I didn’t make it to the northern hemisphere in 2015.

My first trip for the year involved a car trip across the Nullarbor.

In February it was a trip to Brisbane and a visit a hangar, I think a few AFFers were there as well, although why most of you left after the first tour I have no idea.

March I managed a visit to Qantas First lounge on the way to Auckland.

April I went on a boat trip up the Murray River.

May another trip to Perth,

June a trip to a Auckland, with 2 highlights, a drink at the Emirates A380 bar, but also a sightseeing trip around Auckland on a DC3.

July was a trip back to Perth,

August saw 2 trips Melbourne, one an AFF Champagne Appreciation NIght. CAN2

September was a wipe out with a failed trip to Perth.

October was busy with a trip to the grand final but with the wrong WA team in attendance.

October included a trip to Cairns for AFF9, and then later in the month was a trip to Tasmania with a return on the Spirit of Tasmania.

November was Perth again.

December was a weekend trip to Coffs Harbour, with a one way trip on Greyhound, and another trip to Melbourne for AFF Xmas.

And I will start 2016 in Perth.

AFF Flight Tracker: Flight logging, mapping, stats and sharing

Some of these trips were enjoyed with a lot of different AFFers, thanks to those that I met during the year.

Re: 2015 in review

A little bit quieter for me this year.
Only one F lounge visit (and no, I did not get RSAd, nor kicked out).

31 flights
-23 domestic
- 8 international
(Still 2 flights to go this year, MEL-AKL-CHC).

37 434 miles so far (60 244km) Shorter than last year due to only one trip to the US this year. But travelled across the ditch 3 times with one to go.
91 hours and 21 minutes in the air.

New airports:
TPA
CNS
BUR

Most flown route: MEL-ADL and vice versa
Longest flight: AKL-LAX

I actually spent more time on Air NZ this year than Qantas... (19000mi versus 9000)

Class of travel:
16 economy
2 economy+ (Air NZ Trans Tasman)
6 business (including an upgrade on LAX-AKL)
7 first (ie AA first class)

Re: 2015 in review

Woah. Had my biggest year of flying ever, clocking in so far at 187,320 miles (301,462 km) over 82 flight sectors with a couple of domestic Australian flights to go.

28 of those sectors were in long-haul F
(SQ 11, LH 6, JL 4, QF 3, EK 2, CX 1, BA 1)

Best Flights: Service trumps hard product for me, so easy winner is Lufthansa First Class (FRA-HND top pick). I also love the refurbed 4-seat F on SQ 77W (HKG-SIN, SIN-SYD top picks).
Worst Flights: My other-half fainting in-flight twice, both on short haul flights luckily and all is ok. (AY HEL-IVL, LX IBZ-ZRH)
Low point: Getting caught in the middle of Day 1 of Lufthansa strike chaos, spending 4 hours at FRA after flying in from HND looking for my luggage (which was tagged onwards to Berlin, but that flight was cancelled) and having to spend the night at a crummy airport hotel before getting a 6 hour train the next morning...

Best FF Move for me: Crediting *A flights to LH Miles & More, whilst sending SQ spend to the SQ PPS Club. I will cross the line of PPS club soon, so have completely double-dipped my way to Star Gold with 2 airlines on the same flights.

Best Airport: HKG
Best New Airport: HND
Preferred Airport for Connecting: MUC
Worst Airport: NAP

Next Year: Looking forward to trying the SYD-DFW QF flight for the first time at the beginning of Jan!

Re: 2015 in review

Despite having done more than 100,000 miles, the longest sector this year is SIN-SYD, while the most southern airport I was in this year was AVV. It has definitely been a strange year. Although I'm also happy to have also added cough and OIT as new entries this year.

And my QF metal miles is only 30% of my total for 2015 - one of the lowest on records.

Re: 2015 in review

Have taken the last flight for the year.

The good news? that last flight has dropped us in FCO - so we've got a good head start for 2016

Racked up 27 sectors for 52,648mi... bugger all really however, apart from BNE-ISA-BNE every other mile was leisure, either in F or J.

Highlights

SYD-LHR-SYD QF F
IST
ATH
FCO
CX F lounges

ImageUploadedByAustFreqFly1450762300.249343.jpg

Have already booked and paid for 55,000 miles in the first half of 2016... All leisure Highlights will be Norway, Sth America and CX F CDG-HKG.

Mid 2016, I'll be ~ 20,000 miles short from hitting 1,000,000 miles.

Already thinking how I should hit that mark.
