Currently booked LGW to DXB inn QF flight number EK metal. Email from Qantas today offering a re-route, departing LHR on QF metal. My question is why this has been offered and whether anyone has received a similar offer in the past?

On quick appraisal I'm thinking one advantage may be a chance of an upgrade if i'm on QF metal rather than EK (currently booked into Y; yes, I know ).

Is the EK flight still going ahead? Not sure which type EK is using for their LGW runs, but you probably want to stay away from the 10-across Y on their 77W's. Although I guess I would also take account of where I would be in LON. I most certainly wouldn't take an extra hour to travel to LHR if I'm quite close to LGW.

Hi Andy, yes, EK flight still in My Booking, so no cancellation or any other reason for this. It seems like a deliberate effort from QF to get me onto 'their' flight. Have been flying quite a few EK metal / QF FN legs recently as it's the easiest option from Perth these days- maybe that's triggered something in the QF loyalty system? Probably wishful thinking...

Staying smack bang in the centre of London, so not really here nor there for me with travel to the airport, but thanks for the advice on the aircraft- will look into that now. As well, I'll be checking whether an upgrade would be available if I make the change (gotta read that small print).

Doesn't appear to be the case- no cheap fares available.

Also, the LGW flight leaves early AM whilst the QF metal flight leaves evening- how do QF propose I make my connection in DXB, which as it stands, is about as lean as it can be...?

I believe LGW is the 77Ws, so definitely worth avoiding if possible.

Wonder why the loads are so low- normal for the season or people aren't flying so much at the moment (non-essential that is)?

Yes as a change in dates saw me going MEL-SYD- DXB on QF then DXB-LHR on EK metal so this gives me an extra 5 hours at home with family

Considering there are two similarly timed services leaving LHR, wouldn't simply cancelling one and shifting pax over to the one work out better for them

This is a bit cheeky of QF IMHO. I assume the operating carrier gets the lions share of the revenue in the QF/EK partnership so it makes it worthwhile for QF to have a go. I have never heard of this happening before in any codeshare agreement.

If I was EK, I would be having some 'words' to my QF 'partners'.

Out of interest, did the OP book the QF code on EK due to a price difference or timings? What's the price difference between the two for the travel dates?

Out of curiosity, anyone still believe that the QF/EK partnership is the rip-roaring success a certain CEO would have us believe, hoards flocking back to the QF kanga route because of the draw of the EK network ex DXB ... or that ALL remaining routes (post that announcement) are making money??
