That's not entirely correct I'm afraid. One of the conditions for arriving as a VTL passenger is that you must be travelling on a designated VTL flight (and with SQ ex-SYD, only two of the three flights are actually designated VTL flights; SQ242 is not and if arriving into SIN on that flight...

The seatmap on EF for that flight tends to agree with this - the flight was probably fairly close to capacity to begin with. I notice though that they have opened up some W inventory, but none in J or Y.

Their flights to SIN are terminator flights for now so no one in their right mind will be travelling on those on the days that they are not VTL flights (assuming they are even able to get certain days of the week locked in). I guess I better be prepared to get a refund and rebook on SQ then...
