Anyway...lets the Points Run continue ;)

But there is still just over a month remaining in this particular point run.....and I must admit now that finding items to purchase, apart from normal groceries from the supermarkets, is starting to be a real challenge!!!!!!!!!

well i now shop on sundays at Coles for a few things, but i found a fruit and veg shop that takes AMEX (Colonial Fruit supply - great fruit and veg too), plus a new butcher i found takes Amex aslong with the chicken shop. so there is 4 transactions quite easily. Add to that i usually forget something and have to visit the local safeway later in the week etc.. I've hit 120 for the month now.. 140 is my aim...

Can A Card change your life ??

It might make an intersting school or uni research project.

How did this little er error on Amex's part ..completely change the lifestyle of it's er victims...?

I live a quiet semi rural life .
Going shopping requires having a bath , catching the horse , hooking up the dray etc etc.

I tend therefore , to generate long lists, and have "big days out" hitting the shops.
Not anymore.
I do have lists , but these are now substantial logistical documents with cost / benefit analysis spreadsheets.

How many extra points for how many extra trips .. extra horse feed , wear and tear on shoes and more frequent farrier bills vis a vis the siren sound of the (so far vapourware ) rewards points tinkling into my bin.

Never mind the 6 bottle discount at Dan Murphys .. just two will do .. I will come back tomorrow ...

I even had a sudden flash of courage and walked out on a local Newsagent who refused my now well worn card for ten bucks worth of magazines

Can a Card change your life ?? .. yup surely can ...

Have you considered the store specific stored value cards?

Buy today and spend tomorrow ... (or next year :p).

These were found to be a handy little earner on last year's Major Amex promotion ... (http://www.frequentflyer.com.au/com...s-rewards/opt-earn-10-bonus-points-11538.html)

congrats, so I guess you are the 1st un-POC'd ;)

Apologies for the miscommunication - I am not unpoc'd - Amex have just paid out everything they think hey owe me - they are in fact around 116K short of what I think they owe me...

I think most people agree that this wasn't a mistake on Amex's part - it wasn't an inadvertant typo that created the Amex offer. Unusually generous offer on Amex's part, sure, but not a mistake

I agree with this opinion.

Sure, it does seem very generous compared to some other offers.

However, there were THREE very similar promotions 5k for 5T, 5k for 10T and 10k for 20T.

These were all rolled out into the public domain and all who came to the website were able to register.

They accepted people into the program, so should honour that for the initial bunch. Fair enough if they close it to late comers who didnt sign up in time (and were not targeted).

I think most people have a gripe about being shoved onto 5k/10t as opposed to being allowed to stay on 5k/5t.

The deliberate long delay in posting is also disappointing. In fact, the whole attitude from Amex over this has been a souring experience, rather than a happy one. Will be interesting to see how the FSO complaints turn out.

Yes that new shop at Chadstone is great. The greengrocer I had been using for many years stopped taking Amex about 6 months back....so now has a permanent replacement.

Not sure why disappointing????? as the T&C on the original postcard quite clearly said an 8-10 week delay in posting points (despite that points did post forseveral days early on).

As to the rest...yes Amex has been in panic mode. To you this is possibly surprising as you believe the promo was not a mistake....and so that they should have just smiled and handed over the points.

To me it is not surprsing as Amex IMO unwittingly opened floodgates that they did not mean to as the points they will need to award will be IMO several orders of magnitude higher than was their intention.

When you allow for the fact that many postcarded people were chopped off from the no limit registration as they applied after Sep 20..I would propose that the extra early non-postcarded registrants would only be a small part of Amexes larger than intended liability.

In my case I calculate that it will take Amex about 10 to 20+ years to earn back the bonus points that they hopefully will be awarding me....and only after that will they once again make a profit off my card use.

Today (at 11:40am) I logged into Amex website to see my points history, and I got this:

"We apologise, our system is temporarily unavailable. If you were in the process of reinstating your points, please log in again shortly to check the reinstatement completed or call 1300 363 276 for further assistance."

Hmmmmm ...... Plot thickens .... Wonder if they are going to do the back fill and give us all the points?

Or is it just wishful thinking?

I understand that message it when they are updating your MR account with yesterday's transactions - I've had that a number of times.

Code:
Month Transactions Points Credited Points Owed
September^ 23 5,000 5,000
October 70 0 35,000
November# 80 0 40,000

^ from date of registration (18/9)
# up to and including 24/11, with at least 1 transaction to post from yesterday/today (plus any from my wife). Goal is 90, so I'm well ahead of target

Still no bonus points but I'm a patient man....for 10 weeks from 30 September for the "unposted" September 5K points they owe me, et al

Interesting that my points are now updating at around 3PM rather than previously which was around 9:10AM.

I wonder if some accounts are subject to human review now on an ongoing basis...

I did have 3 Movember transactions yesterday and will have 3 more today - got to support my team :)

I too am yet to receive any bonus points. I am wondering whether they have outsouced to some poor child somewhere the task to filter through my transactions to find 'suspect' activity. I and Mrs NSWhere have made over 300 transactions so far and are currently waiting for Amex's response to my compromise offer (5K/5T) before taking it up with the authorities and pushing for all 3.

I can imagine I (like many others) am not particularly popular at amex's exec office.

Anyone else smell a large scale point devaluation coming?

I have noted the same change.

It used to be every morning. Now seems to in the afternoon.
However unlike you I am only getting normal MR points at present and not the Bonus.

True, we've covered that earlier haven't we. All the working families (yes Rudd, the royalties are in the post) who aren't on these promos and who have spent years racking up a 100K or 200K balance would be rather unimpressed if that suddenly only got them a $250 David Jones voucher when they had beeen planning a family holiday. Huge reputational risk for Amex.

On the other hand, if we assume each point costs Amex ~0.5c (if points spent on travel vouchers are worth 1c and points spent on gift cards are worth 0.87c to cardholders this seems conservative, right?) then you could easily imagine this promo costing $millions (5000 members signed up at 5T/5K making 2 transactions a day = $5mil, again I think this is conervative -perhaps ridiculously conservative)

Perhaps that (partially) explains the sign up bonuses they are running. While 30-50K bonus points is generous (@ 0.5c costing $150-250), the short term cash flow for amex should be positive as the cards cost $400-900 per year (nothwithstanding the fact that things like qantas flights and priority pass cost real cash).

Oh, I don't know! The bean counters and marketers at amex must have some serious headaches...

It would depend on how big their overall point liability is compared to the number of points being given out in this promo. However, I expect that would be part of the costing of the promo, and by the time any such devaluation came through many folk would already have moved their points on.

In summary, I would not expect one as a direct result of the promo.

Correction - today it was around 1PM.

The deficit is now confirmed as 116K :)

And I had three transactions today excluding Movember so by the end of today I will be up to 85 transactions for November. Add to that Saturday's shopping, fuel and final Movember donations from mrssimongr and her work colleagues (they will give me cash and I will pay on Amex) - I am looking at 100T for November :)

Aaaaaah :!:

nowork,

This has been covered to death in the last few pages so please go back and look through the thread.

I don't mean to sound cynical BUT you appear to be living up to your handle

Apologies straitman. :D

I called AMEX Membership Rewards and asked them to check my account as i felt the points had dried up and to make sure that i was still on the 5T/5000P and they said i will be getting the points, it just takes 8 - 10 weeks after the end of each month and that i am not capped.

Awaiting the points.

FWIW, Today marks 8 weeks since the end of September. Although quite why it is from the end of the month, and not from when the relevant transaction was made is not clear.
