why are we still filling this thread with ppl trying to justify their bill splitting? What we think doesn't matter, and if you've actually read the thread instead of just skimmed the last 10 posts each time you login you'll realise this has ALL been debated before and we all know when it is legit or not.
I'll give each of you a gold 'non rorting' star if you want, maybe the ppl that do get caught by amex can show them the star?

to reiterate: whether your bill splitting is legit or not, WE DON'T CARE!

I dont think it is reasonable to expect people new to this thread to have read all 1182 replies - for a start things have changed dramatically since the first post. Out of interest - who is the "we" that you are referring to? The group that joined the forums last week? The broader forum membership who don't care about this topic in the least? The sub-group of forum members who don't care about this topic and think the people posting in this thread are out of control? The Amex lurkers? Who?

I think it is a reasonable discussion topic - people may have paid at the same establishment multiple times and are now wonder whether that might be considered bill splitting - or in fact abuse given that the T&Cs don't refer to bill splitting at all...

2. You felt that the risk of "skimming" of your CC details, or other people in the bar putting drinks on your tab was too high (risk minimisation strategy) - but how to prove your concerns to Amex might be harder - you might need confirmation from the outlet that it followed their charging rules.
There was an option offered to leave the credit card over the bar. I am not too happy with this option as I will be around the place for a few hours and I would not be in constant eye sight of the credit card.

why are we still filling this thread with ppl trying to justify their bill splitting?
As opposed to filling it with other garbage.

By the way I have read the whole thread. Not my fault people continue to present the same concerns and scenarios....

glass, be very careful about making comments that are factually incorrect...not sure whether you are talking about me (who has read every post in this thread) or JohnK (who has probably read most, if not all of the posts - certainly, he began posting on this thread on 16 September and has been consistently posting).

wow.... every post.... i like your avater.... original

glass is right, its same thing over and over, factually speakin

There have been several posted already - and all quite valid. Large Department stores (Myers / DJs) expect you to pay at the counter in the appropriate department, so very easy to have several transactions within the same hour at the same store.
.

Yes and I already posted that many many pages ago.

BUT what we are talking about here is not making SEPERATE transactions in the one store...but bill splitting. That is what their post was on.

So if you can get Myers to split your $69 shoes into 69 different transactions then good luck to you.

However I would imagine that Amex would look at 69 transactions in one day from the one Myers store and say err no...3 or so...then probaly yes.

But back to what were were talking about bill splitting.

If some one took their phone bill and say down and transacted ithrough in $1 increments the payment system will probably take it. But Mr Amex will probably that $249 bill paid in $1 increments is abuse.

If you have your yearly rates notice..and you elect to pay it in the monthly or quartly options as per what is offered on the bill, the I would imagine that it would have to deemed as legimate seperate transactions.

I would imagine that someone has done this...and more than likely many someones.

Right now someone has paid that rate notice in $1 lots and is hoping that they have earnt a million points. Maybe Amex will be that gernerous...and maybe not too.. Going by Luisas post..maybe not.

Yesterday my husband went out for some shopping and returned with 3 Woolworths dockets.

Me: Are you crazy, Amex will accuse us of abuse!
Him: Hang on, I bought groceries (1), then went to the Woolies bottle shop for a bottle of scotch (2). Then I remembered you asked me to buy cigarettes and drop them in to your dad. I bought them at the outside counter (3). Anyway, you can't buy cigarettes inside Woolies unless you wait at checkout for someone on staff to go them. So next time do I hold up the queue or just forget your dad?
Me:

Will this promo end a marriage?

Well you wil have to decide on the marriage;)

Hoever I would imagine that sucha small number would be ok.

However if you spent saya solid hour goung around and around racking up 20or 50 transactions..then I would imagine the boom would come down.

The grey area...will be how many would be deemed unaceptable...and if points now take 8-10 weeks to post....do you want to wait that long to find out that your bonus points have been disallowed?

Not sure what Amex will rule....but I would imagine that lawyers would go by what is reasonable...which your example would be I would assume.

If the transaction is disallowed what difference does 10 weeks make? You will not get the bonus points now so you will not get them in 10 weeks time.

Or is there another motive? Do some people actually want to know if certain transactions are disallowed right away so they tailor their spending patterns to suit the promotion? Is this what Amex intended? Don't think so.

Not taking a moral high ground but my spending habits have not changed because of this promotion. I use Amex as much as possible and where I deem it to be appropriate. I wonder how many people will continue to use their Amex after this promotion is over in the way they have expressed in this thread? My feeling is not very many people will continue to use Amex for every transaction....

Yes the page is now working at last - BUT if I enter 'myrewards' or 'mybonus' it returns the following message:
We apologise, this Bonus offer has now ended. Keep an eye out for our forthcoming promotional bonuses and remember, you can register for the bonus as soon as you get our notification, there is no need to wait until the bonus starts. That way, you will automatically earn bonus points as soon as the promotion starts!

The wording of this is actually odd...and by that I mean the part I have highlight in red.

It implies that you will be able to register in advance for a promotion that has not yet started, but will soon....

This to me suggests that they are in the process of issuing a new promotion, and most likely for those that have not been able to register. This will probably include those that were sent the postacrd, but did not act immediately on it (or perhaps were sent their card later than some).

Whether this will go beyond the original mailout will be another point of interest.

No doubt because they know that there are a lot of aggrieved people out there who cannot register.

A seperate case is of course still unknown for those that have successfully registered for the "old" promtion.

1) I am sitting in the bar downstairs and I walk up to the bar buy a schooner of beer. Pay with Amex and sit down to drink the schooner of beer.
2) A short time later, yes I know some people will say a very short time, I walk up to the bar and buy another schooner of beer. Pay with Amex and sit down to drink the schooner of beer.
3) Repeat step 2 as often as is necessary.

Why am I rorting the system?

You would not be...though many pubs I have been at if you paid by card would want you to open a tab on the card and just pay at the end...particularly if they are busy.

I was talking about spliiting of phone bills, rates etc.....and not genuine seperate transactions.

If you split your one drink into seperate amonts that would be bill splitting. Good luck at convincing your barman though to pay for your beer in 10 cent transactions though ;)

Again as I first posted...apply what is reasonable.

Is it resonable to froma pub have several rounds of drinks in the one night = yes.

Is it reasobanle at a pub to have 50 by 10 cent transactions??? = you would have a lot of explaining to justify it (if you could do it!!!).

FWIW, Here's some info that some may find useful, or not to others because it's not on AmEx letterhead.

I tried to register for MYREWARD earlier this week (Wednesday) and was told that it'd happen manually and to call back today (Friday) to confirm. Just got off the phone with AmEx in MEL, discussion details presented here in summary.
  • Online login system down till "early next week".
  • Only those who got a card/form in the mail will be signed up by telephone now (cross-checked my details - no card, no banana).
  • "fivetimes" webpage not considered valid as T&C's have changed and was only intended for those who received a card/form. (Spurious point debating that link appeared on AMEX homepage)
  • Anyone signed up before 19 Sept will remain on original T&C's (gesture of goodwill apparently).
  • Anyone signed up after 19 Sept will be on 10k/month cap to a max of 40k for the promotion.
  • QF branded cards are no longer eligible.
  • Anyone "exploiting"* the promotion will forfeit bonus points (retrospectively included) and in some cases already, closure of account.
When asked about when new official T&C's will be issued, CSR replied "soon".

Anyhow, make of that what you will......just relaying details of the chat I had with a CSR. I'm sure that others will hear/experience otherwise.

CSR admitted that plenty have slipped through the cracks but was adamant that I wasn't going to be one, despite protestations about the apparent unfairness (goose, gander etc) and disincentive to use AmEx and/or seek out AmEx-accepting merchants.

* when pressed for examples CSR cited: small purchases, buying then returning item straight away, paying bills in increments (NOT monthly installment types). (Do not flame me over that response or question me about what constitutes a small purchase etc)

I registered on the 20th/21st and have earnt more than 10k to date???

Not by me.

For abuse you can lose not just the points involved...but your entire MR account.

So over 10 weeks the bill splitter could lose not just their imagined bonus, but their legitmate earn as well.

They may have put through say $10,000 = 15000 points before adding on any Promtion Bonus.

Hence my comment.

Thanks Happy Dude. For the people who will/may remain on the original T&C,... do you recall if 19th is inclusive?

And when you say "anyone", do you know if that includes those with no original postcard?

And as of 1508 today sept/26 miraculously thr site is down and "temporarily" unavailable.

Too popular???

Thanks for that. Seems like the most measured response/comment I have heard from a CSR. This is essentially what I was expecting - honouring existing T&Cs and starting people off with new T&Cs from a set date. Not sure on the dates though - I think they might be reaching on those.

Happy Dude, Qantas cards are no longer eligible? (as in from now on?)

I would assume that as the VP confirmed anyone that signed up will remain regardless

Quote:
I just wanted to let you know that the offer will be restricted to Cardmembers who received the invitation in the mail; and Cardmembers who are currently enrolled, even if the offer was not intended for them.

We will be reviewing all Cardmembers who registered multiple times and limiting their enrolment to the original offer, or the offer they would have been eligible for had they been invited to participate.

Strange - I used "twenty" and "20" in the URL but came back with 404 errors both times...

Perhaps they don't think that people who are high transacters use the web??

Lindsay:

Not that I have found, sorry. Only for the 5T:5K and 10T:5K promotions.

After spending over 30 minutes on the phone to 2 CSR's and one manager anyone who registered prior to the 18th/19th is fine, as per original T&C.

(lucky buggers)

Anyone who registered after this date is capped at 10,000 bonus points per month, 40,000 bonus points in total.

No exceptions will be made (I asked for this as I registered on Saturday the 20th, I also stated that I had earnt in excess of 10,000 bonus points, was advised they would stay, but no more points would be issued prior to 1st of October).

She stated clause 14. something that they could change the offer, and that is that.

Not happy based on what the original offer was on the card received, but hey, looks like the Amex card wont be used going forward... (grumble grumble)

They will argue that you have done it to abuse the promotion.

I mean what reasonable argument can you put up if you have done multiple transactions on the one day that the purpose was not to rort the system?

If at Woolworths / Coles... splitting into roughly $30 transactions will get you a fuel voucher...

(Actually, I think Woolies and Coles should give you vouchers for however much you spend in the transaction... i.e. spend $100 get 3 vouchers...)

(Actually, I think Woolies and Coles should give you vouchers for however much you spend in the transaction... i.e. spend $100 get 3 vouchers...)

Not in my experiences. It's 1, regardless of how much you spend in the 1 transaction.
