Just a head's up with applying for this card and having a decent credit rating. Mrs. Boffster applied at the start of the month and got knocked back. Which is nuts as she earns way more than me. Turns out she had a Telstra bill from two years ago which she disputed, never paid and proceeded to ignore. Not clever I know, but there it was.

Anyhow, here's my signup link. Thanks folks! -> http://amex.com.au/refer/julialQaFV

Do you know if Amex looks at the credit scores much? My income is above what's required but have a few applications rejected lately due to credit scores.

Not sure if they look into it "much" but they definitely look into it as I checked my credit score and one of the 2 that actually looked into it was Amex. They however didn't bother check my income since my 2 applications, 1 or 2 months apart used 2 different gross figures (not that I tried to lie, I just didn't work it out at first how much I get grossed up) and I still got my cards alright.

Of course. Credit card scores are an integral part of the review process for any card provider, and every time you apply and get rejected, your score will drop even further. Suggest you are best to take a 'break' for 6 months and let your score repair a bit before you complete further applications.

Given you've had a few rejections, if you're not already on top of it, I would also suggest you check your Veda score - you can either apply for one free file (expect to wait around 20 business days), or pay for an annual subscription (may be worth it if you have lots of activity on your file and you want to monitor it continuously).

I thought rejections or approvals don't affect your credit score (... yet)? only when your credit file is accessed does it drop your score?

Yeah I heard that as soon as you apply for a new credit card, your score goes down... It would take 6 months to stabilise it, from what I read (unofficial source)
Anyway, anyone knows anything about points transfer from Amex velocity to Velocity account? I just got a statement (first one) from Amex and it said I had a few points transferred, however my Velocity account doesn't reflect that! The brochure said it would be transferred automatically every month, do I have to wait for next statement to see the points or should I just call Amex to enquire?

From memory the amex points may move from the Amex account and go missing for a day or two at most before appearing on your velocity account.
And it's good to see that the referral points are awarded immediately a card is approved.

There has been quite a lot posted about this card in this thread and rightly so, because with the 100k Velocity points currently on offer, it represents pretty amazing value. I only signed up for this card because of the 100k bonus Velocity points - if the bonus points weren't so valuable I wouldn't have bothered. I also should admit that I'm unlikely to keep this card beyond the first year as for me the Plat Charge / Edge combo is a better fit - but as with a lot of things, it's horses for courses (my preferred cards might no be yours)

So who would this card be good for? Quite a lot people probably (perhaps that is why it is so popular), I would suggest it would be ideally suited to those who:

  • Want to cash in on the sign-on bonus of 100,000 Velocity points - I value Velocity points at 2.0c+/pt - so this alone, to me, is worth $2000! For an annual fee of $349, I think WOW probably sums this up pretty well! Can I apply for five of these please? If you were going to buy Virgin / Singapore Airlines or Etihad Business or First class ticket and use these bonus point instead, you could easily double that, $4000+ value for a $349 outlay!
  • Virgin / Velocity flyers that want a good value premium card with some quality perks!
Apart from the massive sign-on bonus, the best points (bad pun intended!) of this card are:

  • The free return VA flight each year - that alone easily pays for the annual fee - destinations list here - value $400+ to me
  • Two VA lounge passes each year - value to me around $65+ (some may value them more, others less)
  • Two entries to the very nice SYD AMEX lounge (I recommend it!) - value to me around $80+ (some would value this more highly for sure!)
  • Domestic and international travel insurance - I wouldn't want to put a value on this - it depends so much on your travel patterns
  • A traveler friendly points earning profile (ie up to 3 pts / $ on travel spend)
The points earn structure of this card is really well suited to those that fly Virgin, enjoy eating out or want to earn a good dose of points on their foreign currency spend. The points earn structure on this card is a follows:

  • 3 points per $1 spent at restaurants in Australia and on Virgin Australia spend
  • 2 points per $1 spent on airlines, accommodation, other travel and foreign currency spend
  • 0.5 points per $1 on govt charges, utilities and telcoms etc - the AMEX usual - you often use Post BillPay (and / or PayPal) to boost this to a much more exciting 1pt/$1
  • 1 point per $1 on everything else
In summary, I found it impossible to resit the 100,000k Velocity points on offer for the $349 annual fee. When you take into account the free return flight on offer it is really 100,000k VA points for nothing (or better). Don't forget to qualify for 100k bonus points you need to spend $2000 on the card within the first three months. Until the end of July AMEX is offering referrers (me in this case) 60k points for each referral - even without that I'd still recommend the card - it's all about the 100k bonus points!

Not throw wet blanked on the party, but I want to stress that whilst applying for great credit card offers, like this, can be great value (and even addictive in its own way) - it isn't for everyone - please only apply for credit you can afford! No sign-on bonus, however lucrative, is worth a lifetime of debt!!

For anyone kind enough to use my Referral Link - my heart felt appreciation - I'll certainly be putting any referrals to good use!

Just wondering how long people are finding it takes for the 100,000 points to post to your Amex account? I've had an Amex within the past 12 months but proceeded to sign up as a lot of people were having success anyway. I met the spend on the 18th of July and haven't received the bonus yet. I remember with Amex last time the points posted pretty quickly. I have had a friend sign up to my referral and I received the 60,000 points today for that. Is it likely I will get the points or have they caught me out and they won't be coming through?

Also throwing my referral link in the mix if anyone is kind enough to use it. http://amex.com.au/refer/davidhGei3

Cheers,

David

Giving it a go, posting my link :) Running a bit low in points so if anyone would love a new CC with an additional 100,000 bonus Velocity points, this is the link to use ;)

Great offer, you get 100,000 and I get 60,000 for the referral. Minimum spend of $2000, but easily done, especially with rates coming up. Same perks as above, lounge access, free flight etc.

Thank you for looking!
Hi RoseAnna,

I signed up using your referral and just got my card today! Can you see your referral points?

For anyone considering applying for this excellent sign up bonus I advise acting soon as there is only 3 weeks left under the current promo (enough time for a referral!). My referral link is here if you would like to pass on the AFF love. I would be most appreciative!

Can't be too shy when asking people to consider using a referral link, and unfortunately there is no order or rhyme/reason or fairness to the use of links :(.

My velocity points sweep is 28 July, and 1st anniversary is mid August, so going to cancel the card, probably move onto a Platinum Edge.
Referral points come through the day after approval, so if my link is used by ~25 July, then these points will be sitting in Velocity by 29 July, allowing me to cancel :).
Basically my last chance to maximise my year of having the card! Still need to book my free flight but!

If you use my link, please post that you have done so, and let others use somebody elses.

To get some extra chance of somebody using your referral, post your details on the OZBargain AMEX Wiki: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/wiki/american_express_referrals

Cheers in advance

Hi all,

Used a referral in this thread to sign up for my first AMEX and first experience with Velocity. Would appreciate if someone could return the favour and use my referral link for 100,000 points for you and 60,000 for me.

Hi all,

Used a link in this thread before, hoping to get 1 more referral bonus to redeem the tickets for both my old folks in the pointy end of the plane.

Please let me know if you have used my link and I can have it removed after I get the bonus.

Thanks in advance

Hi. If you have access to amex online services you can usually click on 'Velocity Points Transferred'. This will show points for transactions as they are accumulated...
