presume now lnp back in govt, that airlines will try to push up all the loss leader fares slightly & see if they sell. Could be interesting few weeks. From what I've been told, by a few airline resps, I know, forward sales died, when election was announced. Also know many who delayed big purchases, to see what election result was.
Its interesting because QF put out another DSC offer yesterday.

And here we go. The media personalities are apopletic. One is saying "Australians are dumb, mean spirited and greedy". Another implores ScoMo to seek advice from Adern. Another calls the voters "turds". One wished she was a New Zealander. One tweeted "we may have to declare war on Queensland"

I suspect the next 3 years will be turbulent because the Media wont accept the people's verdict.
Adern from NZ ? You must be kididng. She's a disgrace.

yep extra ff pts & DSCs is a better way than trying to match loss leaders put out by other airlines. A race to bottom can end in tears/job losses at airlines as they seek ways to cut costs & airlines going broke,

Think most here would agree, that for flights to USA, most australians would rather fly au flag carriers VA & QF rather than u.s. flag carriers, who generally have to be cheaper. UA used to be airline of last resort, amongst many I know who go to USA every few months for business.

QF does own around 46% of FJ & codshares on many FJ flights.

A friend has speculated that the potential effect of the Folau saga on the election outcome should not be discounted especially in light of the Labor policy to strengthen Section 18C restricting free speech even further.

Again the centre of politics win government. Labor had policies that went too far to the left.

The Senate is going to be interesting because generally in the past voters have not given one political party the control of both houses. If they think one is going to win the LH, they tend to give the UH to the other side. Now, did voters think that the LH was going to Labor? and in response voted in a coalition UH?.

That idea of allowing old and mostly buggered parent migration would have choked up our struggling health and hospital system. Let parents come for short stays would be ok but the migrant quality needs to be properly assessed.Australia needs employable migrants.
In the US you can claim interest paid on your house mortgage. The problem with this is Americans often never get their mortgage to zero and can face foreclosure/eviction when they retire when they run out of money.
I support the idea of taxing sugar loaded soft drinks as well as drinks laden with monstrous doses of caffeine.
We do need better life exit rules but the religious groups won’t hear of it.
Plying someone with terminal dementia with heart and diabetes medication as well as wearing compression stockings is not what many folks would support if they were asked about it.
I am hoping to increase our social housing accommodation up to 400 in the next couple of years but there are many roadblocks in getting there to help homeless folks re-enter society as we know it. Drug and alcohol addiction still seems to be increasing.

That doesn't make any sense - the only possibility was that the election might have been earlier, but as it happened it was left until the last possible weekend (notwithstanding some suggestions next weekend would also have been a valid date). If someone thought there might have been another six months before an election, they shouldn't be in a position to be making decisions related to its timing.

& Folau saga has years to run. It's much bigger than sport.

Scomo picking an actual dates, just bought the spending decisions to a head. Many probably were sitting on the fence, re spending before date announcement & the date picked, just gave them an excuse to hold off. Talk of recession has been around for a few years.

ABC calling Wentworth for Libs - 75 seats. Libs ahead in Bass 0.8% 2PP, 82% counted; Chisholm 0.2% 2PP lead, 71% counted.

But the claim was that forward sales died when the election was called. But there was no new information introduced by it being called. Perhaps the date being called made people come to the realisation the Coalition weren't going to propose any significant changes or direction.

I presume we're not talking about the public service being in caretaker mode and any effect from that.

when "reality" hit & it looked like alp-unions would be in control after election ........... many people who should know better, esp after USA election & brexit, believed polls & their confidence dropped even further. Those with govt contracts weren't concerned at all, as they were getting paid regardless of economy.

Seriously? Perhaps the reason so many voted LNP was because they are struggling, already, to pay huge mortgages. They already can't afford to pay child care. They already can't afford all the other things they want. Penalty rates were cut and they're going to stay that way. So you could equally argue that airlines will have to futher cut prices to attract people?

so many airlines have already folded this year, esp in Europe. Many pax are now opting for LCCs or not flying at all, instead of flying so called full service airlines.

the statement ...

They already can't afford all the other things they want.

says it all.

Too many people living above their means. It's the recession we had to have, but it should have happened 10 years ago.

Ummm... JetAirways. And WOW - which was a low cost that folded because it didn't have a premium offering. Here's the thing... the legacy carriers are offering a comprable product to the LCCs... hand baggage only fares that come with restrictions such as no advance seat selection. But you still get IFE, meals and basic beverages included. LCCs just can't survice with competion from the legacy carriers who are making their profits from premium cabins.

We seem to have gone from predicting a recession because the ALP (or should I say "Unions") are going to win, to now saying things are already so bad we're heading for a recession, with international factors also a problem.

I'd suggest the government has far less influence over business than many in here have been suggesting, but the fear and hysteria in this thread over the chance of the ALP winning was quite something.

Incidentally, as things stand, the last government to raise taxes on the (taxable income) rich remains the Abbott led Coalition. That budget repair levy really did the trick at reducing our debt though....

The increased corporate tax revenue has little to do with policies and more to do with placement. No longer is the ATO headed by a career public servant, nor are the majority of senior appointments in the department public servants. They all come from private background with significant experience in the large private firms, the ATO is now being run more like a business focusing on results and settlements - this comes from the structure and direction which has arisen since the influx of these professionals.

Watching the poacher become the gamekeeper from the inside was an interesting experience. When the Large Business World was set up in 1988, we did extensive field work and some brilliant results. But the wheels fell off until Commissioner Jordan turned up. Many of us were very annoyed we had a lot of staff who seemed to think deleting emails was a good result. When the infamous $1.5 billion Myer float money floated to the Cayman Islands this on top of the a few other famous losses occurred, it seemed the toppling point for the former Commish.

You’re right about change of structure where the Commish forced staff to get out there into the field. Of course the double Irish Dutch sandwich led to MAAL (& TATF) armoured with IMPROVED legislation. Corporate tax transparency , getting bums off seats out doing fieldwork. a few court wins, settlements plus the exhaustion of many 2008 losses) these have supported a significant contribution to revenue uplift

Had a bit of a shindig last night - maybe 50 people in all - which really started to kick off when Antony Green called Warringah for Steggall. A very negative and at times quite vicious campaign against Zali had been rejected emphatically by the voters - a portent for the remainder of the evening?

Alas no. If there's one thing that is now proven (two things actually), is that it is not possible to release too few policies or to go too negative.

When the result became obvious there were no cheers, and the guests embarked upon the quest to rid my house of alcohol. Like Zali they succeeded completely, and I had to give the last two guests a lift home to finally be able to get some sleep. [This doesn't include the half-dozen who crashed on any soft surface available].

I'm sure that 90% of the AFFers are chortling over their cognacs and cigars that Moody's lefty mates had a coughe night, but read on for the real punch line ... which you may not like so much.

This wasn't an election party per se, but a birthday party for my son. He (and most of the guests) had just voted federally for the first time, and NONE of them had voted for the Alt/Extreme/Rabid Right parties.

Gen Z, don’t give up hope. Keep on registering and think of a less selfish future.
