2024 F1 Thread

Except the Mexican money...put PER in Daniels car...that may keep the cash coming.
I'm not sure how much they really need the money brought by Perez's sponsors? I mean... every little bit helps of course, but Red Bull aren't exactly lacking cash in the first place and with the cost cap in place, there's only so much money that any team can spend in a given year anyway. Add to that, Perez doesn't really fit the mould of a Red Bull "athlete"...
Then fire both and hire Sainz in 2026 like they wanted to all along.
I suspect the only way this will happen is if Max jumps ship to Mercedes. When they were at Torro Rosso, the relationship between the two was strained. Certainly one reason for that would have been that in the context of being drivers within the Red Bull program and racing for the junior team, both were trying to prove themselves for a shot at the top team (with Max already earmarked by RBR as a future Champion). Red Bull basically told Sainz he was no longer wanted, and to his credit, he has thrived outside of the Red Bull program and shown himself to be one of the current crop of top drivers. Would he want a seat at Red Bull now? Maybe... but there are a few questions you'd have to ask -:
  1. Does he really want to be the #2 to Max? If Max is still at RBR, then you can guarantee Max will have #1 status and that already limits Sainz's potential within RBR. I can't help but think that jumping into "Max's team" is a recipe for another fractious Hamilton/Rosberg-esque situation - great for the spectators, but horrible for the drivers and the team dynamic.
  2. Will RBR still be a powerhouse without the genius of Adrian Newey? For that matter, if Newey doesn't end up at Ferrari, would Sainz want to pass up the possibility of driving a Newey-designed car at another team?
  3. Will the Red Bull Power Trains x Ford partnership be successful? If the early rumour mill is to be believed, Mercedes are looking the goods for their '26 power train, so would he be better off with a Mercedes-powered car?
  4. Would he prefer to be a team lead and (hopefully) build a successful team around him?
Never say never in this sport, but I'd be surprised if he ends up at RBR.

I agree its unlikely...but they sure need a better driver than PER or probably RIC as well if I am honest and not patriotic. If RIC goes there they will sink for sure, every team he moves to goes down...lol.

Not sure about that.
Ric smashed Hulk and Ocon in consecutive years at Renault.. it's just that the car, and I think particularly the engine, wasn't great.
Really only McLaren he struggled at, and I think people underestimated Lando, but did deliver McLarens first win in ages.

I share DejaBrew's thoughts what without Newey and Honda, RBR might not have the same attractiveness to drivers for 2026.

PIA took the win but bet he wished it was not handed to him like that and he will enjoy his first proper win more.
RIC went backwards as normal.

Very enjoyable race and so glad to see Oscar take the win! Kudos to Lando for being a good team player.... eventually... 😜

Checo in P7.... hmm..... a reasonable drive, but aided only by the pit wall getting him out in clear air. I can't help but think he should have been doing more with the machinery in terms of carving his way through the midfield cars earlier in the race. That being said, George wasn't having much more luck in his Mercedes. Is it enough to save him from being booted from RBR? Right here and now, I'd suggest the answer is no, especially with McLaren scoring a 1-2 finish and Max having a bad day at the office. With the gap in the Constructors' Championship now down to 51 points, McLaren on an absolute tear with 2 drivers in top form, I'd be thinking that RBR are very worried about their trajectory post the Emilia Romagna GP given that McLaren have scored 184 points compared to RBR's 121. Spa will be make or break for Perez.

Respectfully disagree with both comments.

This was not handed to Oscar. He earned it through a brilliant start and excellent race management. To suggest otherwise diminishes his performance. The only reason it became an issue was McLaren knowingly stopping Norris early (such that he would undercut Piastri) explicitly for the purposes of covering Hamilton whilst also explicitly advising both drivers that it was strategic and that there would be a position switch. The rules of engagement were clear to both drivers and like it or not, it's a team sport. Anthony Davidson just made the point on Sky's coverage that for the purposes of British taxation law, drivers are employees of the Team and therefore, employees are expected to do as the team demands of them. Additionally, if McLaren was not seeking to cover off Hamilton, they would have pitted Oscar first, meaning that Oscar would have had track position and could have better controlled things. Would he have held on for the win in that situation? Who knows? But we're talking hypotheticals now which is precisely what Lando was discussing over the radio.

As for Ricciardo... He actually drove a very strong race. He - and Yuki - were overtaken at the start by cars running the soft compound (vs their mediums) and RB royally screwed him on race strategy, particularly for his first stop. They succeeded in placing him in a DRS train, whilst leaving Yuki out in clean air to go long. They went for the undercut on the second stop to put him in clear air and he was (comparatively) rapid. Through the course of his second and third stint, he was consistently faster than Yuki and was only overtaken by the Aston Martins, which were undeniably quicker cars. Why didn't the Astons get Yuki? Simply because they screwed their own strategy and put themselves on the back foot, whereas RB got it right with Yuki.

very grumpy Max. Penalty due.
He certainly had his grumpy pants on today didn't he? GP Lambiase has the patience of a saint dealing with Max when he's in these sorts of stroppy moods, but I do love his sarcastic replies to Max's petulance. Max absolutely deserves a penalty for that move given he was completely out of control.

Good to see McLaren playing fair , though clearly NOR not happy. Don’t think the VRB strategy did RIC any favours with the extra pit stop over TSU.

RIC shafted by diabolical "strategy" after a strong weekend.
Good to see McLaren finally do the right thing by PIA for once after undercutting him yet again.
Max, Max, Max....crikey....

So no penalty for Max, with stewards suggesting Lewis could have done more to avoid the incident. Watching live, I did think Lewis - entirely legally - guaranteed contact, but as much as it was about defending his own position, I’m confident he was also trying to press home a point. For his part, Max still seems to believe it’s one set of rules for him and a completely different set of rules for everyone else.

I think Max is learning that things don’t always go your way. Perhaps he’s slow to learn these lessons?

Wooden shoes, wooden head.
He’s proving he has learned nothing since 2021 when it comes to close quarters racing. He’s proving he’s as hot-headed and petulant as ever. And he’s proving what a classy ambassador he is for the sport, his team and his sponsors (as he tells his critics that they “…can all f@$k off.”). Class act.

The guy is undeniably quick and undeniably talented. But he will not go down in history as one of the more loved/respected Champions unless he changes his ways.

NOR played very nerdy entitled yesterday especially since he was effectively given a win last race when they brought PIA in at the wrong time.
Yep. He made his point but then dragged it on way too long. Will Joseph’s comments on the radio were bang on -:

The way to win a Championship is not by yourself. You're going to need Oscar and you're going to need the team.

The Drivers’ Championship is a very long shot for Norris, but the Constructors’ Championship is massively in play for McLaren. Handing back the position was a bitter pill to swallow, but with a cooler head, he’ll recognise that it was the right call and that the trust engendered by that action will serve him well into the future when it’s really needed.
