2024 Paris Olympics

As expected sadly.
Australian surfer Jack Robinson has nearly drowned in a horrific moment before he somehow progressed to an all-Aussie Olympic quarter-final in Tahiti.
The West Australian called the conditions at the notorious Teahupoo reef in French Polynesia the most dangerous he had ever experienced as he was held underwater for two waves after a wipeout and had to be rescued by a jetski patrol hundreds of metres away.

Watched this game, and it was amazing. Hope the Aussies can keep up this form!
I played water polo many years ago. I wasn’t much good, but some of my team mates were. Apart from being a strong swimmer, my main attribute was endurance, which you need in a sport like that. But I wasn’t adept at the raw violence the game required. What happened under the water shouldn’t be talked about…..

But anyway, go Dolphins. I don’t think we will beat all the Eastern European behemoths, but who knows.

Games organisers have folded on their 'low carbon footprint' pledge and have made air conditioners available to athletes in the Olympic Village.

Its 35 degrees in Paris today.

Paris Olympic organisers have succumbed to international pressure from athletes and have provided thousands of air conditioning units to help cool the sweltering rooms inside the athletes’ village.

You can bet that thousands of portable aircon units will consume much more energy than central aircon

Games organisers wanted to reduce the carbon footprint of the Games by more than half compared to previous Olympics and the village construction methods were a key component of their target.

Australian Olympic team officials had anticipated the problem, sorting air conditioning for all of the Australian rooms more than a year ago. AOC chief executive Matt Carroll said at the time: “we appreciate the concept of not having air conditioning due to the carbon footprint” but added “this is a high-performance Games. We’re not going for a picnic.”

Kitchens also getting more 'non vegan' food into the village restaurants.

J'en ai marre!

Women’s rugby 7s semis against Canada. Australia seemed to have all the talent and ahead early but Canada just ground away. Have to say the better team won.

Bit of an upset.
Blew a number of opportunities in 1H but still got two tries, before giving one up late. We hardly had the ball in the 2H and dropped it cold on main possession. Did get a few tough calls against us in defence however.

Turkey sends a hitman to the Games

No special equipment, ear muffs, hand in pocket, nonchalantly wins silver

Its interesting how someone can rock up in T shirt shoot a few and get a medal
While others swim in 💩 then bike and run for nearly 2 hrs to get the same medal.

I dont think he needs any special protein rich diet..

Is there a potential for Australia?

Watching the 50kg women's boxing. Geez, they could be jockeys!
Aussie girl, Sirrachi v. Columbian Valencia. Lots of squealing going on but I cannot discern from whom. Sound like hamsters. More punches thrown and landed in Round 1 than in the entire Harry Garside match.

EDIT: So tired, the Columbian girl walked into the Aussie corner at the end of the 3rd round.

On my SQ flight home yesterday really enjoyed watching the live swimming and seeing the 200m freestyle women's relay and the Australians win. Agree with many of the comments about the ‘challenges’ of the Games - Paris is an overcrowded logistics nightmare without the Olympics.

Well, I haven't visited Paris in summer in over 20 years, but I can absolutely believe that it's "overcrowded" at that time of the year. At the other times I've visited I would describe it as intimidating (for me, anyway!) but I think "logistics nightmare" is probably a little harsh. I absolutely love the metro which means that intra muros you're never more than about 200 metres from the nearest metro station. I can't think of any other major city which is easier to navigate.

And the Paris metro would approach "crush load" usually during July/Aug
If you have a kid in stroller, the metro is a nightmare - in our case 2 kids in 2 strollers.

From what I can gather, the crowds are a bit muted. Parisians leaving town and exorbitant Olympic accom tax means perhaps less tourists.

And the para Olympics games don’t start until end on August. So many weeks to go yet.

Can we now say that Swimming Australia management should be take over by Swimming Queensland given that most of the success in elite level swimming can be attributed to Hancock prospecting sponsorship of swimmers via Swimming Queensland and the debacle surrounding a certain report last year?.
