2024 Paris Olympics

Britain had a 51yo skateboarder, in an event that the teens dominate, and Spain had a 65yo equestrian competitor.

They are spring chickens 🤣

Anyone can compete if they meet the criteria.
They are saying Simone Biles is the oldest American gymnast ever.

Should over50's category be a paralympic category?

Lots of sports have natural advantages to people of various weights, heights or even ethnicities.
And also that inconvenient XY chromosome pair.

.....

Here is the Breaking Judging criteria
Its the same used in Ballroom dancing - I hope that does not come in either.

experience is a bonus
And lots of $$$

The athletes whose equipment fits into their carry on:

Swimming/diving
Athletics
Wrestling
Wrestling/judo

.....

I can't imagine the costs of transporting a 500kg horse with handlers around the world. $20-40K is one figure that Ive heard.

The Olympics is AGEIST.

Where are the events for older over 50s athletes?

I will say Im disappointed that the para-olympics doesnt start for about two weeks. Is it normal to have that big a time gap between one finishing and the para starting?

Yes. Always a gap. The village needs to be emptied and then possibly adaptations made to the village. Same with venues.

Macquarie University

PhD thesis:
Deterritorializing Gender in Sydney's Breakdancing Scene: A B-girl's Experience of B-boying

For those who have no idea: B-Boying is Breaking Boy, B-girl is Breaking girl.
Yes, your hard earned is funding an explosion of "Gender studies" .

Unfortunately, the Olympics is increasingly populated by Judged sports.
If the gymnastics judging (Romania-USA bronze medal spat) is anything to go by, the controversies will only get worse.
I'm not a fan of "mickey mouse" degrees. But do also think that there is a place for academic study of more than just science. Many of the things that give us joy are not necessary technological (AFF maybe excepted as planes and wine do require science).

I imagine that to complete her PhD (and likely to sustain an academic post) she would have needed to secure funding which would not necessarily be from the taxpayer

I a sure you are being way too generous @andye . No doubt a gov'munt and maybe the dole.

Equestrian. Gender-equality and non-ageist. Plenty of 50-plus competitors where experience is a bonus (although the oldest competitor did fall off in the water cross-country!)

For those of you who want to see a real equestrian event

Swing by Adelaide in May 2025
The cross country through the parklands and rymill Park is great

Guaranteed to see many over 50…

I did my PhD when I when I retired and 'self funded'. But that was history so no lab work or stuff like that that might require some money. Although I did buy my own history Library at about $4000 because I didn’t live in the city and couldn’t easily access the University library. Kind of lucky because half the time I was studying it was during Covid.

Totally threw anyone I interacted with in the university administration. They couldn’t figure out how I could enroll without having a scholarship or some support funding behind me. Turns out the Feds paid the cost of my supervisors' time.

One of the advantages of not being tied to the university funding was that I didn’t have to go through a number of their BS systems like travel arranging. Everyone else went through the university travel and had to get best economy fare on the day. I told them that I would be contacting my travel agent to do business around the world thank you very much, visiting relevant historic sites of my study such as in Jamaica and Bermuda.

Yes, so long as these studies are not framed by ideology which they unfortunately often are.

But back to the Olympics.
Will there be a financial reconciliation?. What is the difference between budget and actual. John Coates keeps gaslighting people to "Just trust us... there will not be white elephants". Er, if you have to ask people to trust you, generally there is a problem.
