27th February Big Qantas announcement

Given the 787's reliability (or the lack of which), I'm happy to let JQ play with it for the time being.

Can't see them switching from NRT to HND. GK is based in NRT, so that's pretty much abandoning your own child, figuratively speaking.

One thing that JQ can pay for and QF can free-ride off!

Does EK want to get rid of some 777s? QF could take those!

I'm not sure if the 777 would help anymore, given QF's current network (or whatever is left of it). I see LHR and LAX as A380 destinations, while a fleet of properly refurb'ed A330 (if they ever choose to do that) would be well adequate for the Asia region. The 777 would've worked well as a 744 replacement in most missions where ETOPS doesn't come into play, but those destinations have been cancelled (e.g. FRA, SFO).

Either way, having new plane types won't solve the problem. Other airlines have these types as well, so QF would be just catching up - and as a result, die a slower death than what is currently happening.

A 777 running to DFW would offer QF around $100k more revenue per flight coming home.

I bet Qantas change the frequent flier program. Fewer reward seats, more points needed, more cash needed, more 'taxes', more Qantas management decisions to pi55 off customers.

Sadly this might be the big announcement:

[h=1]Fears Qantas will slash 3000 jobs in cost-cutting drive[/h]

Fears are growing Qantas will slash as many as 3000 jobs when it unveils its half-year results next week.
Qantas' workforce fears deep job cuts as high as 3000 will be revealed next week when the airline's management reveals how it plans to strip $2 billion in costs from the business.

The airline flagged in December that it will report a half-year loss of up to $300 million, and detail the extent of job cuts which it has previously said will be at least 1000 this year.

Well-placed sources said on Friday they believed the jobs cuts, likely to include engineers and pilots, would be in the thousands. While they could not put a definite number on the cuts, sources said they would be ''pleasantly surprised'' if it was less than 2000 or 3000.

Could a standard 777 do that route or would they need the extra fuel tanks thereby reducing cargo capacity?

markis10, maybe you should apply for a job on the new Qantas board. :p

+ 1 for markis10 joining the QF board. Sounds to me like he has more of an idea than these other clowns currently on the QF board.

A 77W could carry full loads, when you look at DFW freight is woeful, 11T for the month of November VS 315 for LA into BNE, 19T DFW VS 1425T LAX for Sydney

And thats exactly why I have a rigorous earn and burn policy.... best to keep a lowish points balance to assist in a quick transition to VA... family pooling will speed up status over there... love qantas but all things come to an end I guess

The problem is, VA status is pretty useless if most of your flying is international. The lack of alliance membership really dilutes the benefit.

Agree greenish, International will be SQ in my case so should be ok

So, so much speculation in this tread……...

The only thing that is a 100% dead set certainty is that if you don’t book your seat to get into this forum on Thursday you may be left at the gate.

I managed to secure one of the last ‘J’ seats ( ‘f’ sold out on January 29 apparently ) ….. I went the window seat to get the best view …….. Although that was not a simple decision, because given with what may go down, an aisle seat may have been a better choice as repeated and rapid trips to the bathroom may be in order.

I’m going to settle down with some Buffalo wings, New York fries, and a few beers and watch it all unfold on the IFE screen ….. I’m just not sure if it will be found in the drama, thriller, slasher or comedy movie section ????

Could be more blood on the walls then when Vincent blew Marvin’s brains out ……… I think a call to Mr Wolf is on the card.

Maybe I shouldn't pay for a planned status run until after this announcement...

What puzzles me is this... you'd think if you were struggling you'd try and do things to increase passenger numbers and revenue right?

But there is a long list of issues Qantas doesn't want to deal with on these boards. I don't know whether it is 'head-in-the-sand' or what, but without any serious attempt to enter into discussion, it seems counter intuitive. Other issues you wonder why they took the course they did.

More of the same old focus on costs alone wont get it done and just maintain the pain.
QFi is already so emaciated, particularly if you want to head west. Finance no doubt will find a heap of savings made even easier with no passengers.

Does QF make money on that service? If yes, it will stay; if no, it should go.

While it would agree this is, in essence, a fundamental of any business, I would argue that being the nation's flag carrier comes with responsibilities. To me, a fair part of that responsibility is servicing a significant portion of the population of the country whose flag you have the privilege of sticking on your aircraft.

I would expect that if the route is loss-making then serious attention be given to turning around. A layman like me would argue that re-timing your only remaining service to be within 10 minutes of its LCC competitor on the same rate is counter-productive and asking for failure.

You got it. Sadly I want qf to succeed, especially ex Per. But they are not helping themselves.
