Ask them to go through with the same sort of cuts that Qantas is going to get. They'll go run the other way very quickly.

It's looking like its a "lay down misere" with broader misery for QF staff and operations !

DEPUTY Prime Minister Warren Truss has warned that government support for Qantas would come at a high price that would require the airline to slash labour and other costs and would not come into effect until all other possibilities were exhausted.
Mr Truss confirmed a debt guarantee was one of the options being considered and that the government acknowledged the Qantas Sale Act put the flying kangaroo at a disadvantage.He said discussions with Qantas would continue next week ahead of the airline's interim results announcement at the end of the month.Qantas is expected at the results to go further than the 1000 job cuts already announced.

Mr Truss reinforced comments from ministerial colleagues that the government was not considering cash handouts and said he did not object "in general terms" to conditions for support outlined by Joe Hockey."We don't want to be alternate bankers to Qantas or anybody else," Mr Truss told The Weekend Australian."We would expect them to be working in the market, so if there is to be some kind of government backing it will come at a high price."Mr Truss said if there was to be a debt guarantee, it would be on terms and conditions that "are not commercially attractive" and would come into effect after Qantas had exhausted all other possibilities."What Qantas is really looking for is to be able to say to the market that if they were to reach a catastrophic situation, that there would likely be some kind of government commitment or interest in keeping the airline running," he said."And that's a real fallback position -- nobody wants the airline to get anything like in that position, but it does help build market confidence that Qantas is seen to be an indispensable part of Australian transport infrastructure."

The Transport Minister said comments by Qantas chief executive Alan Joyce that the airline needed to get its house in order were "absolutely spot on"."They must make the hard decisions, they've got to become cost-competitive," he said.Tony Abbott yesterday thrust the spotlight back on changes to the Qantas Sale Act, which restricts foreign ownership of the airline to 49 per cent."Qantas have been shackled by legislative restrictions that were put in place by the Labor Party back in the 1990s and I think it would be perfectly appropriate to unshackle Qantas," the Prime Minister told Melbourne radio."The second point is there is no free ride on the taxpayer," Mr Abbott said.Bill Shorten and the Greens have signalled they would not support changes to the Qantas Sale Act.

This leaves the standby debt facility as the only short-term option open to the government.The Treasurer spelled out the case for government assistance, noting the Qantas Sale Act restrictions, that foreign governments were actively competing against the airline, that the aviation sector was an "essential service" and that the company was leading internal reform.Mr Shorten flagged the opposition would not support changes to the act: "I believe it's in the national interest to have a majority Australian-owned airline."

That can only mean Mr Borghetti wants the QF Sales Act to be amended to include VA:- The VAQF Sales Act
Australia & NZ are 2 of the very few countries/political groupings that allows majority foreign ownership of domestic airlines.
USA does not
China does not
South Africa does not
EU does not
LAN now has shareholdings in several South America airlines: unsure if it 100% or 49%

International airlines with less than 51% local ownership will have issues with country to country aviation agreements. This is why VAi does not have the same ownership as VAd
 
I wouldn't be surprised to see QF9/10 axed to enable the A380 to move on to DFW route. I'd also expect QF5/6 to be axed - this route is often operating as A332 after starting as 744 last year.

Both these moves would allow an extra 3-4 B744 to be retired.

So once again, despite 5 years of current management, the only idea is to "cut costs".

Surely after this amount of time there has to be more to the plan than "cut costs".

And if that's still the plan, then why weren't these cuts part of the original "cut costs" plan.

The current management have clung to the "65%" plan too, but surely profit is more important (for the company and shareholders) than "65% market share"??

I have a sickening feeling the announcement will be underwhelming and little more than trying to cut to success which will never work as a long term strategy on its own.
 
I'd also expect QF5/6 to be axed - this route is often operating as A332 after starting as 744 last year.

Or give it to Jetstar. The A333 used by QF has just about the same number of Y seats as the 744, so if they can sub it so easily, I would take a guess that J is not filling up well. In which case, the JQ A332 also has about the same number of Y seats. As much as we hate to see it happen, it definitely reduces costs. It's probably easier to sell in terms of connections to Asia as well, since pax are going to be connecting onto 3K anyway.

I wonder what he would say if then the Government introduced the Virgin Sale Act.
 
There will be big changes announced - the 1000 staff, that is the start...........try a couple of thousand jobs gone. Big changes will be happening and it will be ugly.

Joyce will be gone too - will offer his resignation, when he ends his reign, who will know.
 
We can only hope. Whatever you may think of him, he is now associated with failure.

He'll stay and do the heavy lifting with the unions/IR. After that he'll have a "brand" as a toe-cutter - this will be very attractive for many boards looking to take on the same sort of transition.
 
JB just had a massive dummy spit on the ABC Am programme......geez, what a pathetic interview! That ABC journalist should have done some background research here on AFF and actually prepared for the thing.
