Also, you can upgrade up to three segments on the same booking for the cost of one:

Re: Couple of AAdvantage questions from a newbie to it

Absolutly!

I have upgraded LAX-BOS, BOS-MIA-DFW-SEA & LAX-ORD-FCO, all on LONE4's using Miles/[Donated]eVIPS.

Hi Serfty - does this make any difference who you booked the LONE with? Ie. do you need to book with AA to upgrade on AA flights? Or if you have AA flights booked on a QF ticketed LONE with an AA FF number attached?

And out of interest, just in case anyway happens to know anyway - is this the same for QF?

Cheers.

Re: Couple of AAdvantage questions from a newbie to it

Don't know about the ticketing personally, mine have been done on 001- (AA) ticketed xONEx's, not 081- (QF) ones but I have seen advice it can be done.

This is an AAdvantage program benny, not QFF which is strictly by single QF flight numbers.

Re: Couple of AAdvantage questions from a newbie to it

It can be done on QF ticketed itineraries but is fare class dependent-sorry not sure which classes dont qualify but have been knocked back using EVIPs for 1 person and being told this.Have had it work on other occasions though.AA in the past have reticketed if upgrade goes through.

I believe AA used to restrict upgrades from some of the deeper discount classes (such as O) and/or specific routes.

However, ISTR these restrictions being removed a year or three ago.

In any case, L class would never have been an issue.

Re: Couple of AAdvantage questions from a newbie to it

each FF program can (theoretically) upgrade its airline's flights on a xONEx ticket.
AA can upgrade by two methods - stickers for domestic USA flights which I have seen happen independently of the issuing airline (not AA eg BA). eVIP or SWU upgrades are the 3 segment "oneway" upgrades where the ticket has traditionally been re-issued by AA, thus changing it to an 001 ticket. And requiring that AA be able to see all (remaining) segments. For this reason I have elected to spend an extra $50-100 to ensure the TA will issue on AA stock.

As I understand the BA MFU procedure, I think it should work for a BA issued xONEx. I have not heard of any QF issues as long as it is a QF flight number on QF metal. Alas the CX elite group doesn't seem to be inclined to (buy or) discuss their xONEx experiences.

Happy wandering

Re: Couple of AAdvantage questions from a newbie to it

Though I have had no issues with the reticketing by AA when using EVIPs.The email with the E-ticket arrives very soon after you hang up after ringing to use them.the last time was December 2012.

Re: Couple of AAdvantage questions from a newbie to it

If upgrading an AA sector using AAdvantage miles or eVIPs, the ticket will be re-issued by AA on a 001 ticket (regardless of original ticketing airline) with the upgraded sectors ticketed in the upgraded class. This can be a little complex for some tickets not originally on 001 ticket numbers and may take a little time to complete. But I have done this successfully on every attempt for both my own tickets and those of friends receiving some of my eVIPs.

Re: Couple of AAdvantage questions from a newbie to it

Hi AA gurus,

Now that I have (sort of) become familiar with QFF, I am reading further about AAdvantage so please excuse my questions if they look elementary to you here.

Now, there is a bonus offer on at the moment (60K + 30K bonus points for $USD1650 + $35 fee) with the deadline being Feb 28th.

Generally speaking, would that be more cost effective than buying the tickets outright?

If you are short of points for your proposed run, could you buy the remaining sectors using CC instead or you then have to buy / wait for more miles to have those sectors?

What are the easy way to keep the miles alive for 18 months, short of flying AA of course ?

When you do the SC runs, is it more cost effective to use F (or should I be booking J) ?

The AA multi-city booking has a 6 flights limits, how do you have 7th or 8th linked to the previous 6 flights ?

Once again, you could tell I am a genuine AA NB  (QF SG!)

Cheers

Re: Couple of AAdvantage questions from a newbie to it

The downside of buying AA miles is that the flights then become award flights and DO NOT count toward the current year's (re)qualification.
And premium Y is almost never available to partner programs.

Maybe I don't fly enough

Are you saying that AA flights purchased on miles will not earn (QF) SCs ?

Please clarify as that is my goal actually, QF SCs from US runs

AA flights on purchased miles are Award flights and earn no points or Status Credits

Hi AA gurus . . .

Well, I'm no AA guru, but I think I can help with some of your questions.

Now that I have (sort of) become familiar with QFF, I am reading further about AAdvantage so please excuse my questions if they look elementary to you here.

In premium cabins, the answer is a definite yes. Of course, you still need to find award availability.

What are the easy way to keep the miles alive for 18 months, short of flying AA of course ?

Simply buying 1000 miles (the minimum amount that can be purchased) would keep the account active, I think.

When you do the SC runs, is it more cost effective to use F (or should I be booking J) ?

The best AA runs don't book into F but are YUPP or KUPP fares. Search for YUPP/KUPP on AFF in the thread titles and you'll get heaps of info.

The AA multi-city booking has a 6 flights limits, how do you have 7th or 8th linked to the previous 6 flights ?

Six sectors is likely to be the most you'll ever get in a run (one way). To get more, however, you can simply do an origin and destination where direct flights don't exist. For example, DEN-LAX. There are no direct flights between those two cities but there are via DFW.

Awesome !

Thank you

Last year I made a mistake of booking one QF Classic instead of ASA and got no SCs for the run.

So, the miles offer is not for me then.

Sincere thanks, Danger

Off onto YUPP/KUPP now !!!

I am on a learning curve here.

1 point is enough to keep points alive, transfer some points in (4 Best Buy points, 4 Asia Miles and a number others with give you that one point via points.com.)

Re: Couple of AAdvantage questions from a newbie to it

Hi to all AA Gurus here,

I am finalising my SC run schedule and there is a sizable gap at SLC (arr 15:40, depart 20:10) that I would like to exploit by branching out & return to add some more SCs to my run.

May I ask for some pointer on what short run I could fill in from SLC - at a reasonable costs (say $2 per SC).

I only require some 100 SCs out of this short run.

I would not know where to start, trying SLC-xDEN-SLC but the costs is $$$$ as it is routed through LAX which I do not need.

Early Nov 2013 is the date.

Much appreciated for your expertise here helping out an AA NB.

Five hours ex SLC for 100 SC's is a pretty tough ask.

In fact, without looking, I would suggest it is almost impossible.

As it comes from Master Serfty, I will now plan for a good read of some sort in SLC.

I may even leave the airport for a walk downtown !

No more mixing the schedules !

Thank you, Sir

Re: Couple of AAdvantage questions from a newbie to it

Not sure if this would be better placed in the qantas thread or here.

would like to know whether airlines 'share' rewards seat availability. E.g. Syd- lax, so qantas plane, AA code share

If I can see 1 seat available on QFF classic award, and 1 seat available on AA, but not 2 seats in either program. Does this mean:
1. Only 1 award seat left available on that flight
2. Only 1 award seat left through each program- I.e. > 1 reward seat available

obviously its a lot cheaper to go through AA miles, but availability is the real issue when trying to book 2 people together.

Cheers
