A couple of questions from an AAdvantage newbie

Re: Couple of AAdvantage questions from a newbie to it

The answer is probably NO but it's worth the question.

..... Star Alliance J redemption on OZ connecting to domestic AA F redemption ..... On 2 separate PNRs

Can baggage be requested to be checked through to final destination ?

I'm an optimist but I can't find any supporting documents.

Anyone with similar experience to report back ?

I presume the AA domestic is either in Australia or the US? In that case, your bags may or may not get the tag to the final destination, but nevertheless you will need to collect your bags, clear custom, and recheck them in. So, I guess at the end of the day, it doesn't really matter whether your bags are tagged all the way through...

Transfer between the two PNRs is at JFK.

Even if it is not tagged through to final US destination, yes it can be done at the transfer desk.

But if it can be tagged through, worth the request IMO for ease of record tracking etc ...

Re: Couple of AAdvantage questions from a newbie to it

Had an interesting experience with the routing rules this week. I'm currently in CMB with an MH booking back to MEL via KUL. I wanted to upgrade this to CX via HKG. I spoke to a very competitive agent who told me the only way to do this between these city pairs was to fly on CX CMB-HKG-MEL. There was a UL flight CMB-HKG which stops in BKK but keeps the same flight number and was told this was not a valid routing and that it would be split into two awards.
This confused me because I believe obviously fares are published between these two cities and the BKK stop is only 40 miles longer than the direct CX flight so no MPM issues.
The agent insisted the only way to do it as one award was to fly CX the whole way. Was this correct? Is there some rule I don't know about?

It depends if there is a published fare allowing CMB-HKG on UL connecting to HKG-MEL on CX.

The published fare has to relate to the journey/trip as a whole, not the individual flights.

Re: Couple of AAdvantage questions from a newbie to it

All my wandering through the UL booking engine routes CMB-Australia flights through KUL or SIN where code shares are found on MH and QF/3K/JQ respectively. OTOH CX routes everything through HKG.

Happy wandering

Fred

Does the published fare have to be by the first operating carrier or any carrier on that routing?
How do people get away with booking QF connecting onto EY in Australia? QF would never publish a routing via AUH.

It's the 'overwater' carrier that needs to publish the fare. In the absence of any published fares between the origin and destination AA will apply MPM+25%, provided the agent is satisfied you are on the most direct routing (which is where it comes down to agent discretion).

you also have the rules about transits and connections in third regions which are imposed on all of the above (for example, those which don't allow transits in the ME except for DOH or QF/QF etc).

Call up CX? Or on CX web site? (although I have always called up and got the seat I wanted)

Been to CX site no recognition of any of the numbers, logged into my CX account ditto, so why would I call CX?.

Think I read somewhere call AA for CX PNR?

Re: Couple of AAdvantage questions from a newbie to it

I call AA to get the PNR or whatever code it is that allows me access to the airline's reservation system. Have found Fiji to be very helpful.

Re: Couple of AAdvantage questions from a newbie to it

Yeah called AA got PNR, went to CX site selected seats, all good.

As said... when booking and now for PNR, AA Fiji very helpful told them so too :)

On Qantas web site, go to "Your bookings" section and click on "Show All Bookings", under the table of Your Flights click on "manage your booking". Under "Your Flight Booking" punch in your AA PNR and surname to open your itinerary. At the top of the page you will see Amadeus' PNR. This is the PNR used by QF and CX. Use that to find your itinerary on CX web site.

I got the PNR after calling AA, then went to CX site and selected seats it was simple.

Very new at this. When looking for seats in Etihad, I guess I am looking foe Etihad guest seats? TIA :D

Re: Couple of AAdvantage questions from a newbie to it

Cathay search criteria suggests it searches in Cathay Pacific, Dragonair, British Airways, Qantas Airways, Qatar Airways or Finnair

However it never brings up options for Finnair from HGK - HEL. Is there a work around, or where to search for Finnair? TIA

Re: Couple of AAdvantage questions from a newbie to it

Finnair comes up on aa.com.
That being said QF,HA which always used to show up on aa.com have been largely missing for me lately.

Re: Couple of AAdvantage questions from a newbie to it

I'm having trouble booking an award flight using the US number, is it better to use the Aus (Fiji) number or just keep HUACA. All of the other bookings I have made have been fairly easy and used the US number. The itin is fairly direct (PER-DOH-TXL-LHR-MAN) but I'm not getting the love from the US.
