A couple of questions from an AAdvantage newbie

Found it, thanks. I thought it was maybe a referral thing.

Signed up and no availability for CX on my desired days :( Next sale then!

When looking for seat availability make sure you do it leg by leg, ie SYD to HKG and then HKG to KIX. If you do it as SYD to KIX you may not see anything as both BA and QF search engines don't do connections very well

I'll try checking one leg at a time but I've already checked on the AM portal as well, nothing available. Might have to buy some points now for next year.

Thanks for the tips.

Re: Couple of AAdvantage questions from a newbie to it

Can you book Africa to Europe via DOH on QR as a single award?

Question that just popped into my head straight after I just booked HKG-SYD-MEL for tomorrow night...

Would a CAN/HKG-NRT-SYD-MEL routing be allowed? I know it's not direct (unsure if JAL flies to CAN) but it would be a lot more fun than doing it so direct!

no. It will exceed the MPM (25% max)

yes - but it would require two awards

it's not possible under a single awards because because Asia 2 -> South Pacific cannot go via Asia 1. (Lack of a published fare would be the second barrier, MPM would be another factor)

Well I guess it was worth a shot. :)

Have a look on LifeMiles (if you use them).
I recently did PVG-NRT/HND-SYD on ANA. (All J; 787-8 regional, then R2D2 on the Sydney leg)
Also done MEL-SIN (orBKK)-ICN-NKG/PVG on SQ/OZ or TG/OZ in the past - might be worth going over there to play around if you like unusual routings - see if you can work something.

Oh I use them too. :)

I think at the end of the day it's hard to justify non-direct routings when travelling for work - even though I work for myself. At the end of a week or two in China I normally just want to get home.

Having said that, I did catch the bus from Guangzhou/Foshan to Hong Kong today and now happily sitting in QF lounge waiting to go home.

I have only slightly been able to piece together an answer to my question, but a more definitive answer would be appreciated!

I have 2, possibly 3 economy trips to the US coming up in the next 3 months. 2 are booked through AA with the trans-pac flights on QF metal and the internal flights on AA (and eagle), my QF number is entered on both of the bookings. The third trip isn't booked but likely will be booked through AA again with my QF number in the booking. If i credited all 3 to AA, i know this would go a fair way to achieving AA Plat (probably better to do a challenge). But then i wouldn't be able to use my QF SG status for the 3 trips (which is great for lounge access, seat selection(saving money for good seats internally in US) and any problems that come up). Unless there is some way that i can have my cake (QF SG) and eat it too(get AA Plat status)?

I've calculated the 3 trips get me 520 QFF SC's, which is 180 off me getting WP, but my year ends 31 August, and I won't have time to do any status runs plus I personally would rather gain AA status as I think I'll be travelling to the US more and possibly moving there at some point.

tl;dr Can i use my QF SG status while earning AA status?

Thanks for any and all thoughts!

Yes you can use your QFSG status while building status with AA. Just flash the card at the entry to the AAdmirals clubs

I always have my AA number in bookings but if not with mrsdrron always flash my QP card at the AC and have never been knocked back.

Hi All

Have been racking my brain trying to find something I read regarding EY bookings AU to Europe having to be split into 2 bookings. Is this through AA or was it through VA? Also what are the new points requirementsfor these bookings? Thanks for your help.

AA routing restriction don't allow travel from the south pacific (Australia) to Europe with a connection in the middle east unless (a) you are flying Qatar airways (the 'doha' exception) or you are flying QF to QF (for QF1->9 or QF2->10 or v.v). The 'Doha' exception requires you to fly into and out of Doha on QR only.

EY to EY therefore requires two awards.

Travel from Australia to Europe is otherwise allowed under a single award if connecting via selected ports in Asia.

The new award charts can be found on the AA site direct.

Thanks for that. So VA can be booked as one redemption but AA treats it as 2 sectors.
That's right. But VA wants more points for the same thing plus now up to 300 USD in a "carrier surcharge" per sector so an AA redemption rates now don't look too bad compared to VA

Do AA enforce the 4 segments rule? Pretty sure the answer is yes, just want to confirm.
Sitting on 24912 points with at least 100 due tonight.

Yes although the chances announced a couple days ago have seen it eliminated:

"With the addition of EQDs, we’ll remove the rule that 4 segments must be traveled on American or American Eagle during the qualifying year to receive elite status."

However, this is for qualifying from 1 January 2017 onwards so the four segments are still required this year.
