AA to fly LAX/SYD; Qantas returns to SFO/SYD

About time - some real competition USA-AU OW

Apart from the booming economy in the bay area, the other thing that has really changed since 2011 is that AA's (and therefore oneworld's) overall share of the US market has increased significantly. This could of course have flow on benefits for QF.

The recently opened Amex Centurion Lounge in SFO will be a good F Lounge substitute for those not flying ex LAX.

The recently opened Amex Centurion Lounge in SFO will be a good F Lounge substitute for those not flying ex LAX.

And the Admirals Club in Terminal 2 is a very pleasant lounge and they showcase California wines by the glass. Terminal 2 in general is a very pleasant terminal. It has a yoga studio, Cat Cora cafe and Napa Farms Market also an excellent wine bar amongst many other options.

This quote from the article basically admits they were not making money -

Woodward admitted that the popular direct Sydney-San Francisco service "has not been a failure from a route perspective, but from a strategic growth perspective for Qantas, DFW is the better plan for the future."

Removing the PR bull#&*t, the route attracted passengers but did not make any money. So they moved to DFW instead. I have no issues with that.

Fast forward four years and the same issues still exist but QF are now giving away a successful route to AA and taking on a route by their own admission is not good from a strategic prospective (or makes money).

I assume QF is talking PR cough when they say that SFO has higher corporate demand than PVG and AKL?

The move to DFW was smart to hook up with AA's biggest hub. The recommencement of services to SFO is smart (and overdue). Getting AA to fly to Australia means that AA now has some capital "in the game", which may lead to a bigger increase in pax to Aus and onto the QF domestic network. If they manage to sell the extra capacity on this route both sides will win.

Now if QF can exercise some 787 options, SYD-SFO and SYD-LAX can both go daily and the 747's redeployed until they earn retirement.

Wait a minute...didn't you (AFFers) tell us not to use the "e" word anymore?!

!@#$%^ if we do, !@#$%^ if we don't. ;)

Poor RedRoo!

It's nice to see Qantas reversing some changes when the situation evolves like reinstating this route. I'm sure there's a few other things that AFFers would like to see reinstated as well (cough xASA cough pretty please?)

I assume QF12 will move back to the QF18 timing, so that it can connect with the JFK-LAX flight.

Daily:

QF11 A380 SYD - LAX (current timing)
QF11 747 LAX - JFK (current timing)
QF12 747 JFK - LAX (current timing, but change flight number from 18 to 12)
QF12 A380 LAX - SYD (current QF18 timing)

3pw:

QF17 747 SYD - LAX (current timing)
QF18 747 LAX - SYD (current QF12 timing)

I think most are also overlooking the change in AA destinations from SFO since the merger.Previously AA only serviced 6 US domestic destinations. Two of those would be no use to QF passengers-LAX and DFW.US adds 8 more domestic destinations.Total flights go from 31 to 51.
And does QF also codeshare with AS from SFO or will when the service returns?

As to flying AA I also prefer the AA J and F seats to QF.Also I have had some very good AA long haul crews and some pretty awful QF crews.Neither are consistent but I have experienced a higher percentage of good AA crews. But then they always know that I am LTP with AA so most do say I must do a lot of flying on AA.

Excellent news! I definitely preferred SFO over LAX for transiting. However, when will those 747s retire and are QF gonna replace them with new aircraft? It seems that the 747s just keep going and going.

Red Roo, I would love to see FRA re-instated while you're at it. Though I would also settle for BER. ;)
