Abbreviations and explanations

Wouldn't it be tidier to only include airline travel specific abbreviations rather than adding all generally used txt and internet abbreviations
Probably but then nothing is ever on topic on this board anyway :P

What about these abbreviations :?:

BYO: Bring your own or buy your own
WOFTAM: Waste of time and money
WAWOFTAM: What a waste of time and money

Sometimes the "f" is used in the phrase as well depending on mood

TSA - Transportation Security Administration

Those nice bubbly friendly people who provide an effective and efficient security service at US airports

Dave

Also.....

VIP: Very important person

At which point the check-in agent grabs the microphone and makes the following announcement:

"Ladies and gentlemen, I have here somebody who doesn't know who he is. If anybody knows him, can they please approach me and tell us who he is. Thank you."

Oh yes, the classic and correct response to that question. Its one I am hanging out to use sometime, but have not yet had the opportunity.

Thanks for your feedback Dave Noble, JohnK, serfty, oz_mark, thadocta and NM, and sorry for the slow response.

Agree that the list needs to be kept tidy and have limited all explanations and abbreviations to 1 line in that spirit. Also agree that we have a tendancy to get OT here (OT = Off Topic, another I need to add) .

Have edited to include:

AFF, CIP, FFP, IME, QFF & TSA. ROFLMAO was already on the list. The others of course people can learn in this thread. Cheers :!:

Have edited to also include:

OT: Off Topic
LCC: Low Cost Carrier

Others not added to the list (but noted here for our amusement):

WWMD: What Would Mum Do?
WWDD: What Would Dad Do?
TMI: Too Much Information!

I would have liked to have responded to a recent e-mail from a (recently demoted & now infamous) AFF guest - TMI!

Some more that may make the list

CAA: Civil Aviation Authority
TWA: Trans World Airlines (merged with AA in 2001)
APEC: Asia Pacific Economic Co-Operation
WHO: World Health Organisation

and if you ever get in trouble here or overseas

DIMIA: Australian Department of Immigration and Multicultural Affairs
DFAT: Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade
ASIO: Australian Security Intelligence Organisation
AQIS: Australian Quarantine and Inspection Services

Thanks JohnK, have added to the list:

APEC: Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation
CAA: Civil Aviation (safety) Authority

LOTFAP - Land Of The Free And Paranoid (sometimes referred to as the Untied States)

POT USA - President Of The Untied States of America (perhaps the cannabis use explains some of his decisions).

Is the Untied States the same as the United States?

I thought LOTFAP referred to LA specifically. I have been to New York, Cincinatti and Los Angeles, in that order, and found them all very friendly and airports easy to use. But my standards are very low compared to the rest.

Only once they stop fingerprinting foreign nationals who wish to do nothing more than spend money. And I still can't understand how fingerprinting arrivals will prevent terrorist attacks.

And if its necessary to fingerprint foreigners, why is it not also necessary to fingerprint US citizens? Because US citizens have rights and its actually against their own laws to finger print them without suspicion of a crime. Just think how many crimes could be solved if they forced all US citizens to be finger printed in arrival!

Most of you guys have been to US post 911 and now fingerprinting is compulsory. Sorry I forgot about that.

Agree it achieves nothing to stop terrorism and also a violation of our rights. You fingerprint someone who you suspect has committed a crime, not as you say someone who comes to your country to spend money.

Does fingerprinting include children or is it just limited to adults :?:

It includes everyone who enters on a non-USA passport and does not have a biometric enabled passport. So, yes, it includes children.

Remember that the primary purpose (or the one they state) is to match the passport to the person for subsequent visits. The child's finger prints will not change as they grow older so it is a valid way to determine that the passport has been presented for entry of the same person as before.

The use of a biometric enabled passport should remove the need for them to photograph and finger print visitors, but it remains to be seen if they will stop for such passport holders.

Not quite true I believe, but close. iirc, entering on an official passport rather than a personal passport avoids the fingerprinting requirements
