Abbreviations and explanations

ROE, Rate of Exchange is an exchange rate for all currencies set by IATA every 3 months and used when determining fares, taxes and charges in other currencies. Serfty or NM may be able to give better explanation.
The current ROE for A$-US$ can be found here.

Not abbreviations, but maybe worthy of an explanation? I can never remember the precise difference between segment and sector, and have to go hunting for an explanation. Any chance of someone providing that for this thread for ready reference?

Thanks

Thanks John K & NM. Have added ROE & S2.

Hi tuapekastar and good question.

Sector - The portion of travel between 2 fare break points as determined in the fare construction. Sectors are made up of one or more segments of legs.

Segment means that part of a journey from a passenger's boarding point to a deplaning point. Each flight coupon represents a segment of a trip.

AOC: Air Operator’s Certificate (license to fly)

Under the Civil Aviation Regulations (CAR's) an Air Operator's Certificate (AOC) is a licence to operate aircraft

Under the "New" Civil Aviation Safety Regulations (CASR's) an AOC is to be called an Operator's Certificate (OC) and is still a licence to operate aircraft.

Unlike the UK and NZ who have Civil Aviation Authorities (CAA) the authority in Australia is the "Civil Aviation Safety Authority" (CASA) The "S" is not soft.

:D :D :D :D :D

Thank you BlacKnox, and on the subject, does a flight coupon equate to the bits of paper that were (still are?) torn from a paper ticket as you progressed on your trip?

I've only browsed this post but didn't see the standard and highly NPC QF one:

QANTAS - Queers And Nymphos Trained As Stewards

And to complicate it further, some FFPs define segments and sectors in different ways (to the above and to other FFPs).

That's where it originated from. With e-tickets now so prevalent it no longer holds the original meaning.

Thanks for the clarifications Kiwi Flyer and straitman. Have edited and added:

CASA, CASR and OC.

Thanks duffshot  . Have added with the disclaimer that this acronymn is included for entertainment purposes only and is not intended to cause offence. I can always remove it should someone take umbrage  .

We did have a thread which degenerated into making fun of the acronyms as the one above about QANTAS.
Lufthansa: let us fornicate the hostess and not say anything was one I recall.

And I imagine this one has surfaced many times before:

Quite A Nice Trip, Any Survivors?

With the current "Ansett/Eastwest reborn?" thread these might be relevant for future reference

AWAS - Ansett Worldwide Aviation Services
AWOPS - Ansett Wetleasing Operations

Thanks JohnK for the Ansett acronyms.

Have edited to add (from Kiwi Flyer's "Another Manic Month for Kiwi" thread):

WTMD: Walk Through Metal Detector

I found this thread buried beneath all the rubble!

ST - SkyTeam Alliance

Any chance of promoting this thread to sticky status so that it is not buried again?

Nice pickup JohnK. Have edited and added:

I: Deep discount (heavily restricted) business booking class (see also J, D)
ST: Sky Team alliance

Perhaps that would be useful for n00bs, but obviously is for others to decide.

I can mean lots of things. For example most *A has I as business award and upgrade booking code.

You posted just after I edited my message. I changed it to:

I: Deep discount (heavily restricted) business booking class (see also J, D)

So do you think we should delete it, change it, or add some disclaimer :?:

All booking codes (not just I) are airline specific. While some are very commonly used (eg F, A) others may be standard only in an alliance (and even then not 100% the same).

Thanks Kiwi Flyer - have edited & added a postscript:

I: Deep discount (heavily restricted) business booking class (see also J, D)
(NB: I represents other classes/ codes too e.g. *A business award & upgrade booking code)
