Additional Benefit on Velocity Earning Cards: 40K Points, 6 Months Gold or $300 Travel Bank

I’ve just selected the 40k points offer. I would have thought the system should be automated. But maybe they have to do manual magic at the background to enable it. I will be applying a new card this month before my current contract expires in June.

If I select the 6 month gold offer and sign up to the "Virgin Money Velocity Flyer" card am I required to earn all 100k points/spend min $1.5k per month for 4 months before I qualify, or can I just spend $1.5k in month 1 and forgo the remaining 3 months spend requirements?

The terms and conditions are unclear - they say
the selected Exclusive Benefit will be allocated to your Velocity account within 30 days of receiving the relevant eligible offer associated with the individual card provided by the issuer of the card

Does that mean after the first monthly allocation of points or the last? Does it even require you to achieve a minimum spend or simply to have had the opportunity to make a minimum spend? They go on to say:

Trial Gold Status is only available for Red and Silver Members for 6 months from a start date as reasonably determined by Velocity Frequent Flyer

So your guess is as good as mine.

I would have to ask, though, why you would forego (I noted your unusual spelling of this word and owner whether you were influenced by Wordle

Only asking because I don’t fly Virgin nor have a frequent flyer account with them, but planning to fly SIA in September/October this year so was hoping to just get Velocity Gold purely for lounge (and at only $64 annual fee is pretty much a steal).

Also without the “e” is the correct spelling/use of the word (Forgo or Forego: What’s the Difference? - Writing Explained)

Your money, your call.

But for perspective: the received wisdom is that credit card companies pay about 1c per point and wise redeemers can get 2+c value per point. So you are talking about leaving $1,400-2,800+ value (depending on how you count it) on the table in exchange for a couple of entries to the very underwhelming SQ Star Gold lounges.

And given that there are other cards with access to Virgin points, and you can get the Virgin Money 100k points every year and a half, you could be accessing some pretty special international premium cabin rewards.

I see you have to make the selection by end of May, but do you need to apply for a credit card by then? Would it work if I make the selection but didn't apply a new credit card until June/July?

You need to get the regular bonus on offer from one of the available cards in order to get the additional bonus. The various cards have different application deadlines specified in the Ts and Cs. Some of them have 31 May 2022, but the Attitude cards gave a 30 June application deadline.

The easiest way to solve lounge access problems - be eligible on class of service basis…

In SIN, class of travel gets you access to better lounges than Star Gold - but still not worth paying for IMO. Of all the airports in the world, SIN is probably the easiest to spend time happily without lounge access.

Great offer and looking at the Virgin High Flyer (1:1 points earn) but the $3500 spend/month x 4 months (tricky with the exclusions)... Might have to buy some gift cards (i read the prepaid VISAs are hackable)

I usually prefer to buy Coles Group/Myer or Woolworths Wish cards as they are spend that you are going to make anyway eventually if you use the major supermarkets - or even some of the third party cards such as Bunnings, Apple and Google Play credit that you can get from Colesworth.

There's also no additional fee on these unlike prepaid Visa cards and sometimes you can even get bonus flybuys or everyday rewards points - there was a 1400 point EDR bonus on the Woolworths Wish card if you spent $200 over the weekend.

Anyone choose the 300 clams? This is quite good IMO if you put it towards a reasonably priced domestic J fare where you earn status credits and points plus have the flexibility to buy the ticket rather than rely on a rewards seat to be available.

Been considering trying for the Velocity flyer, I agree I think the $300 credit is worth considering over the more obvious choice of 40k points (which at 2c/point would in theory equate to a much higher $800)

I'm still waiting for my email 1.5 days later. For those that have received the email, what does it actually do? Is there a further registration step? When I go back into the link to redo the benefit selection, it indicates my 40k selection with a Green tick and a link to "choose a card". I'm not rushing out to get a card today, but if I felt like getting it over with I'm not sure if I run the risk of it being invalid?

Regarding card for me, I've already got the Virgin Money, still within the 18 month AMEX window so I think I'll apply for the Westpac Platinum as I'm just outside the 12 month window. Platinum seems better value than Black despite more points offered on Black.

I registered for the offer which is recorded and then applied for the card which has been approved. I didn't receive any email from VFF confirming my choice although it's recorded when you log into the VFF link.

I applied for the Virgin Money Flyer and had the applicatio approved in 2-3 working days. Am now waiting for the card to arrive in the post. I selected the 40k bonus points offer. Will use the card for our routine monthly spend then most likely ditch it before the next annual fee is due.

I am not eligible for this offer (sitting out waiting times) so my thinking is purely hypothetical. I would have opted for the 40k points because I can put them towards a sweet international redemption. I value them at around $1,000. I do not fly domestically and I am already finding my Amex travel credit an albatross as I don't want to cancel the card until I have used it but it is delaying the 18 month lock-out period and acting as a barrier for other applications. I should bite the bullet and just let it go.

But if you fly a lot of domestic revenue tix at short notice and are already flush with points then maybe consider the $300...

I didn't consider the $300 option. Even flying domestically, 40k points is mostly a lot more than $300 - even when used on fare taxes.

I have been waiting 6 days now without an email. I try to do the selection again and it says I already did it so I might just do the application on the weekend.

Update: the email came today. So took a full seven days.
