Advice on champagne

Billecart-Salmon is my favourite NV Champagne, can't drink enough of the stuff ( well actually I can and then it's not pretty :oops: )
I also enjoy Taittinger and Bollinger Rosé NV.
Don't like Moët, Mumm or Lanson
 
Yeah I like tattinger and the Rose as well. We've tried a few vintage varieties but SWMBO says she can't tell the difference between them
And NV Moët and verve so it's not worth spending more. :rolleyes:

Ayala Brut Majeur is usually priced the same(ish) as NV Veuve. If you love Billecart-Salmon you'll definitely enjoy Ayala. May be an easier sell for SWMBO. That's if you can find Ayala in Australia in the first place... not very common amongst the usual places.

I had it a few weeks ago for the first time and thoroughly enjoyed it. I think I'm going to need to acquire some, as champagne is almost mandatory in the warmer months!

As for "sparkling", I'm quit fond of some of the Australian Chandon vintages. For a few $ more than NV there's a noticeable difference. It's what I buy if I'm also buying for others (ie: entertaining) where I buy by the case :)

Yes yes! Taittinger (non-vintage) is a nice drop, as is Bollinger (rose and normal).

But champagnes, like wines are so subjective. I don't like Pol Roger for example, or Laurent Perrier (both serves on Swiss over the years, non-vintage in business and vintage in First).

Cattier has to be the worst, even more than the Monopole.

On Aussie sparklings... we were given a couple of bottles of Kreglinger (from tasmania) - I think it was the rose. About $50 from Dan Murphy. It was up there with Taittinger Comte de Champage. Really really impressive!
 
Billecart- Salmon does go over very well with the ladies. Juddles you should start there as it is not a wallet buster and with a bit of luck your partner will think you are wonderful and it will save a few dollars compared with champagnes that are priced as if perfection has been achieved.
 
A completely different drink altogether. But I also love Rockford Black Shiraz. If you can get it.

If it is bubbles you want rather than champagne my friends drink Rumball that you can get for a $20 note or less.
 
To the OP: If you and your wife can manage to do a champagne tasting course, like the ones in Brisbane with Bernadette O'Shea (am sure there are other & other knowledgeable experts around), that would be incredibly beneficial for you.
Most true champagnes will be mostly red wine grapes - pinot noir and pinot meunier. This varies by house, but generally it's only those two grapes and chardonnay.
Champagne, like any beverage, is a hugely personal matter. I hate Perrier Jouet (too yeasty/vegemitey for me), but most other champagnes are fine, including some of Aussie sparklings, such as the Grant Burge and Chandons. As others have suggested, they would rather eat razor blades than drink some of the champganes I would drink. We are both right, for ourselves.

It's great to have some knowledge and understand whether you like Bruts, brut de bruts, a demi sec .... and if you have a preference for more chardonnay or more pinot for example.
 
On a hot day like this in Brissie, the very well priced Champagne Moutard Grande Cuvee NV makes a fab daily front-of-TV casual drinking champagne and some much needed heat relief. $38 at 1st Choice Liquor. This is a quality poor man's Bollinger Special Cuvée, think Miu Miu rather than Prada.

I am not a champagne drinker but I have found the Delamotte easy to drink in the Qantas SYD First Lounge.
 
Very interesting thread. I am not a big drinker of Champagne, so all the recommendations have been noted.
Must say that in Aussie sparklings I always like the Chandon range.
Was interested to see Keith recommend the Champagne Moutard, as Vintage Cellars have it highly recommended.
Currently quoted at $33 a bottle and $30 per botte for 6 at Vintage Cellars. Even better price than First Choice it seems.
 
For normal sparkling, grant burge is awesome for ~20 bucks is very nice.

~50 i would probably push a bit higher and go for non vintage bollinger, tattinger or billiecart salmon.

~100 i would be pushing to the billiecart rose, moet grand vintage or any of the vintage versions above

~Top end, krug without a doubt, anything higher is just crazy!

I really dont rate nv moet, mumm and veuve clicq
