Advice on champagne

I'm not a champers drinker but got some big celebrations coming up so bought a case of the Chandon from Epiqure, is that an OK drop ?

Hi Ashleyn... Get on board :)
Yes... Chandon is good.
In Aussie sparklings I also like the Brown Brothers Pinot Noir/ Chardonnay/ Pinot Meunier as a very smooth, drinkable bubbles...
And Taltarni Brut Tache when you feel the need for something pink.. and don't we all have days like that :)
Hope you enjoy the bubbles!

The purist in me just died inside a little. ;)

Chandon is awful, and not champagne. Same goes for the others mentioned.

This is not the domestic sparkling wines thread people!

(Tongue in cheek)

Now, back to the French stuff...

I understand your point ComeFlyWithMe but some of us hardened alcoholics (and domestic QF passengers) sometimes need to supplement our Champagne habits with Aussie sparklings.. we'll try to ensure we keep it to a minimum in the "Champagne" labelled threads however to keep everyone happy :)

At prices like $35, and other good French tipples in the sub-$30 price range, even the hardened alcoholics can afford to do it in style! ;)

I agree and have taken advantage of Blackcat's excellent offer.. Check out my post on "Nice wines I have drunk recently - Red or White"... I certainly enjoy Champagne.
There are also some terrible French bubbles.. but I am happy to hear any recommendations for cheaper Champagnes :) Based on some previous bad experiences I have stayed away from the unknown Champagnes...

Yuck. I tried this fizzy vinegar at the DM's Sparkling event in BNE. Awful stuff.
Whereas I love the Brown Brothers sparkling. It wins awards and recommendations for a reason....but then, if we all liked the same stuff, the world would be a pretty boring place. This is where I confess that I wasn't too fussed with the Billicart...

Heehee... Don't hold back Mr Orange... tell us what you really think ;)
We obviously have different tastes... I also don't mind the Grant Burge in QF J...
But we better stop talking about this or we'll get in trouble with ComeFlyWithMe and the other champagne puritans ;)

Australia produces a few okay sparklings but there are so many which are rubbish, so the "brand" of Aussie sparkling is tarnished for me.

Also, when you consider you can get decent Champagne consistently in the $40-$60 range (and sometimes cheaper), the Aussie's have an uphill battle IMHO.

In the Aussie stakes I like Arras, Kreglinger and Jansz. They make some lovely wines, especially their vintage and premium offerings.

Recently had lunch at Frogmore creek winery in Tassie. The evermore sparkling was so good I had to buy a bottle. As good as Taittinger, IMO but priced at $37 it should be. Will have to see if it is still good at Christmas.

I suspect the taittinger is the World Cup branded bottle (also in the DM site) I picked it up at BWS for $31.50 less 5% wish last week. Same bubbles, different packaging, bargain!!

*gasp*! ;)
More for me :D

Fair cop folks. I really went in with an open mind for the local sparkling, but it just didn't cut the mustard.

Yes, definitely back to the real stuff for this thread please ;).

I got the SMS saying delivered (12 bottles). My apartment building concierge will hopefully keep it safe until I get home :)

Don't stay away from the "unknown Champagnes". There are some superb offerings from small houses and it's great fun experimenting with new bubbles, I think.

Went to a Champagne NV tasting last night, with thirty on offer, and one of the categories being "Grower and Smaller Houses". In that group were (excuse the lack of accents) Jacquesson Cuvee 737 Extra Brut, Egly Ouriet Grand Brut Tradition, Larmandier Bernier Latitude a Vertus Blanc de Blanc, Jerome Blin Reserve Brut, Andre Clouet Grande Reserve Blanc de Noirs Brut, Gosset Grand Reserve Brut, Jacquart Brut Mosaique, Henri Goutorbe Brut and Godme Brut Blanc de Blancs.

The Grand Marques numbered 12.

Prices ranged from $148 down to $27.

Lovely way to spend a couple of hours. :)
