Maybe there could be a poll for the non-school weekends in Sep & Oct.

First in with a desire for an FLounge. Maybe SYD-AKL-BNE. :)

Ozmark:

Do a voting thingy for dates, just need to check when the school holidays are on and the football grand finals.

I hope the Friday drinkies are going to be in as spectacular venue as they were in Sydney, lookin over the harbour etc - the draw card of any event - in fact, the bar on Sat night was specy as well with views of the Opera house etc...

What and where has BNE got to offer similar? Do any of the hotels have rooftop bars or similar? I don't really know too many places other than Rydges, Hilton, Breakfast Creek and (the mill?) Brissy drinks pub, all not a good choice methinks...

Also, for me, cost isn't too much of an issue- $6 for a crown or $10 for a crown, I don't care - I am going to spend $$$ getting and $$$ staying there with Mrs!, so we might as well enjoy it yeah?

:)

Worth doing if we can narrow the possible weekend choice down. Looking at Skoogles list, I'd be guessing the first two weekends in Sept or the last two weekends of Oct as possibilities.

Here are the weekends in Sep/Oct, including the state school holidays and the Grand Finals.

04-05 Sep TAS
11-12 Sep TAS
18-19-Sep VIC QLD TAS
25-26-Sep VIC QLD SA WA NT ACT (AFL Grand Final)
02-03-Oct NSW VIC QLD SA WA NT ACT (NRL Grand Final)
09-10-Oct NSW SA WA ACT
16-17-Oct NSW
23-24-Oct
30-31-Oct

Looks like skoogle has already started a poll. Go here: http://www.frequentflyer.com.au/community/playground/aff-4-voting-sep-oct-21463.html

I'll toss in Oct22-24 as my preferred weekend (although early Sept works as well)
A little early to call but looks like Oct 23-24 could be a popular choice....

Some of us do care about cost.

The organising committee has had a few discussions already and we have brochures of what is available and have in mind what we could possibly do for the weekend and also trying to keep costs down as much as possible.

I for one, and I think a few others, are not interested in spending $60+ on a meal + extra for drinks in any restaurant and also not interested in going to night clubs in the Valley where the cheapest alcoholic drink is $10+ a drink.

If you keep costs down for the main events (and pick nice places at the same time) then people can organise their own venues after lunch/dinner and spend as much money as they want.

Care to let us in on who the organising committee is? Given this was, AFAIK, the first post of AFF#4, and it was from a WA member wanting to pin down a date, was a bit surprised to hear there was a committee :D

You do have to cater for a diverse group.

If you pick a few places for pre and post dinner drinks you still get a sizeable number, as long as you don't pick an over the top bar, or a cesspit at the other extreme.

Im not arguing with that point John, and neither place I mentioned was a night club nor from memory $10 crownies - what I am saying though, there will be a lot of people at BNE who were in SYD and stepping backward venue wise for the drinkies FRI and SAT would be sad...

As an example (and only an example so don't take me wrong) I don't think your pub, or breaky creek would be a good kick off venue, thats all I am suggesting.

As for the $60 for a meal - I guess you get what you pay for - $20 for a chicken pama fried up "out back" or $60 for a banquet at a good Chinese or Tappinyaki - I know I would be going the second option...

However, whatever the option chosen by the committee or by general consensus, I will be there with good wife in tow.

Although the breaky creek, or even the norman hotel out wollongabba way might be a spot for lunch...

Having recently spent over $10 a drink on the Gold Coast I’m still reeling from the shock :p

Needless to say it was a very sober night.

It’s going to be hard to top the first meeting spot in SYD, but we’ll do our best to come up with a venue that fulfils the criteria.

Also, for me, cost isn't too much of an issue- $6 for a crown or $10 for a crown, I don't care - I am going to spend $$$ getting and $$$ staying there with Mrs!, so we might as well enjoy it yeah?

As long as you’re buying :D :p

In the last few posts of the AFF #3 thread I volunteered myself and other members who frequent the BNE drinks night, seeing as we’re all in BNE. Since November we’ve had a couple of discussions on the subject.

Im not arguing with that point John, and neither place I mentioned was a night club nor from memory $10 crownies - what I am saying though, there will be a lot of people at BNE who were in SYD and stepping backward venue wise for the drinkies FRI and SAT would be sad...

I think either way it’s going to be a small step backwards, but I do see what you’re saying about The Mill perhaps being a bigger step back. It’d be great if it could be worked in somewhere, as it’s a meeting spot even month in BNE and every members should get a chance to experience it. If only once.

As for the $60 for a meal - I guess you get what you pay for - $20 for a chicken pama fried up "out back" or $60 for a banquet at a good Chinese or Tappinyaki - I know I would be going the second option…

I’d hope we’d be aiming for about $40 a meal. $60 makes me cringe.

Possibly following on from SYD we have a German Club here too, but I liked how the first night was a little cheaper and the second night a little more expensive, so if we can set it up that way, it allows members a choice.

However, whatever the option chosen by the committee or by general consensus, I will be there with good wife in tow.

Good to hear! :)

Am quite familiar with decent venues of diverse libations in Brisbane, but none of them are necessarily cheap. Brisbane isn't really a cheap city to go out in any more..

I haven't tried to buy a meal in Brisbane anytime recently, but recall there were some nice spots around Eagle St Pier. Not sure what prices they would be these days...

The organising committee is samh004, Bundy Bear and Anat0l with a little help from the adopted canetoad JohnK, whereishome and Lindsay Wilson. If mal comes back home before then I guess he will also be on the organising committee....

You do have to cater for a diverse group.
And I do not think anyone else is going to want to let this event down. As far as I am aware we will not have any official events at the Mill but if people want to have a drink there they are welcome.

If you pick a few places for pre and post dinner drinks you still get a sizeable number, as long as you don't pick an over the top bar, or a cesspit at the other extreme.
We were thinking somewhere in the city for pre-dinner drinks and dinner for both nights (Japanese for lunch or dinner at the Stamford sounds like a possible idea) and then people can head off to nightclubs in the Valley or where ever later in the night.

We were also thinking of a half day cruise out to one of the islands and possibly lunch at Breakfast Creek on Sunday afternoon so people are closer to the airport.

We have discussed this a number of times at Brisbane drinks but nothing has been set in stone and we are always open to different ideas withing reason. I don't think anyone is going to leave disappointed....

I think the point about it being a diverse group with diverse tastes and preferred price ranges is a very good one.

I'm quite happy, as happened with the SYD do, to go outside my preferences and comfort zone for one or two venues for the common good (that sounds wanky but you know what I mean).

Knowing pretty much squat about BNE, I'm afraid I can't offer any specific venue suggestions, but I'm sure the organisers will come up with the goods. :)

I am more than happy to go with the organising committee on all venues. Sue and I will be at as many planned events as possible.

As always there will be a few that won't be happy no matter what is planned. In addition some people will come to some events and some will be at all events.

It does not matter what you do that is just how it happens so my advice to the organising committee is to go ahead and plan what you think is best and do not worry about any detractors that may appear :!: ;)

I'm happy to be on the Committee and give my 42 years experience of BNE venues.

There are a couple of places with decent (but not spectacular) views of the BNE skyline. I haven't been up to the Sofitel restaurant/bar (Cuvee - presumably still on the upper floors), I haven't been there since it was a Sheraton.

If we could get the AMP boardroom, or any of the meeting rooms on Level 31 (Gold Tower, 10 Eagle Street) that would give an excellent view of the city and over towards the airport. My accountants are also on Level 26 of the same building.

Alternatively, Waterfront Place or Riparian Plaza would give excellent views. Have a client in WP (Level 33) but no hope of snagging a room from them. If anyone had ministerial contacts, then we could get one of their offices/meeting rooms (not sure what floor they preside over).

There are also units at the corner (both Homer and I used to live in them) - Admiralty Towers. But as they are residential, we'd have to know someone very trusting. Medina Apartments Brisbane would have views, their restaurant seems to have views (but no pictures on the site of th views from it :().

Bars in BNE - I'm not as familiar ;) (it's been a while).
