PS. what's your thoughts on organising an AFF wine tour of the Coonawarra region...... ?

Coonawarra is a fantastic region. I may have ordered 3 bottles of a certain Cab Sauv at a certain restaurant last night.

With regards to visiting Coonawarra, it basically can't be done as a day trip given it is quite a long way from Adelaide (~350KM I think). It is fairly "close" to Mt Gambier which does have an airport, but it is only served by REX which may prove more expensive than a bus from Adelaide. You could probably land your Gulfstream there Steady :p

Essentially you need to do a minimum of 1 night there, probably 2+ to really get to see it properly. The wineries are all close together, and pedal power can be a fun way to tour around during the days.

I would love to get to the May meet-up (any excuse to get back to Sydney, drink wine, and talk status!) but I'll actually be at the Mt Gambier Gold Cup the day before, so don't imagine I'll be in the best flying condition!

Given the price Rex are charging of late I would seriously consider looking at a charter from either ADL or MEL and fly direct to Coonawarra. I'd love to line something up for AFF. Leave it with me!

I did it as part of a conference at Naracoorte. Was good fun and would love to go again.

Narracoorte/Penola is a great place to visit.
You've got the world heritage cave systems, the wine of course, and then there's the free open air swimming pool in Narracoorte which is a great place to cool off on a hot day. You'll probably want to stay around Penola as there are (in my experience) better food options there.

We had the conference in the cave. Yes, in.

Perhaps we need a Coonawarra thread? Mods?

Although I am brand new to this forum, i would love to come to the meet up. Especially as I work right in the centre of Sydney - very easy. I hope brand-newbies are allowed? :)

I believe there's an exclusion policy for axe-murderers, broadsword-murderers, sharp-stake-murderers, assault-rifle-murderers etc. Otherwise I think you're allowed in - check with Wozza :)

Have the rules changed? I was allowed to go in Jan...

You totally, absolutely, categorically are allowed, Jef6050. Looking forward to meeting you. I would prefer you bring a killer wine, rather than any of ACs Wolf Creek characters!! Or should I say Friday The 13th characters!

Auction just won for my offering to the May meal. Halliday said it was aristocratic and has devoured the oak for a very long future! Not sure if this is my final play or if I'll plonk for the 99 pointer. Umm ...

Cannot guarantee yet but will definitely try and get along.

Once I firm up some details I will pm my email details.

Okay, I’m in!

Rules - Blind tasting. Bring two identical bottles of Cab Sauv of your choice (one concealed). Can be a Cab Sauv straight or a Cab Sauv dominant blend. Can be from anywhere and any vintage of your choosing. Owners of the top picked wines will take away a stash of wine. Dress-up (optional for the brave!).

As one of the winners from the previous meetup, I must admit that I was quite embarrassed by walking away with so much wine, while other left empty handed. I know it’s not really my place to be dictating the rules of engagement, but I’d like to suggest an alternate, more egalitarian, prize scheme. I would like to see an arrangement, where everybody that brings along a wine to share, also gets to take a bottle home. The first prize winner would get first pick of the wines on offer, second place gets second pick and so on. The only real problem with this scheme is that the last place getter may end up taking their own wine home again, but I don’t see this as a big stumbling block.

However, I do understand that some people are highly motivated by competition, and may be less reluctant to share a top-rated wine if their potential winnings were reduced. But there may be other ways of creatively solving this particular conundrum. Any suggestions would be warmly welcomed.

Anyway, just something to think about. I'm more than happy to stick with the existing rules if people think that the competitive aspect is likely to deliver better wines than the egalitarian approach.
