Will be interesting to see whether the five get an internal refurb as is expected for the 380s
If we're really talking about 3 - 6 years, then it's very unlikely that there would be a refurb. At which time, even the newest would be 20 years old.

If they plan to keep them 6,yrs I think they might - plenty of time to amortise the cost. If only three years I agree with you.. hence why I said it will be interesting - will give a sense of QFs plans for these aircraft

Point to ponder: by 2022/3, how many airlines will still be flying 747's in passenger service (apart from the handful with the 747-8's)? In fact, how many are doing so even now?

Except the geriatrics OJA will be 29 and OEB (1 previous lady driver in Asiana) will be 27 by 2020.

OEJ "the last of the 747 era" will be 17
OQA Nancy Bird will be "middle aged" at 12

Not sure why you are referring to OJA, that was retired some time ago..

There goes the new Suites to HNL. So the options are Qantas with the old SkyBed Mk1 Lie Flat Angled product (still better than the previous no lie flat product 767-300), or Hawaiian new Business Class product, or if your lucky and get a plane swap with Qantas on the day that has the new Business Class product on the HNL route?

Only until mid-Jan 2017 when the old 332s move to SYD-PEK and seemingly some SYD-SIN, and HNL gets the refurb 333s

As moa999 said, HNL is suites now (barring equipment change). I've got return flights in June 2017 (thanks Companion Sale) and both are suites.

Mid to late 2018 they will have almost 8 787-9s, but these 8 were meant to replace the 5 oldest 747-400s.

So either more 787s need to be ordered or the 747s need to stay on.
I had a look-see and, very unfortunately, this is right. VH-EBG is due to be returned to lessor in March 2018 and VH-EBL in December 2018.

Something is definitely up re: timing of 787s, perhaps an order for more will be forthcoming shortly? Or the 747s will just be banging around forever

Sorry, where did you pull that ridiculous comment from? QF has said that the new route to PEK will be serviced by the two Skybed-configured A330s. (The distance means it has to be serviced by 332s).
And that route requires two aircraft.

And people who have actually made bookings to HNL for next year - such as me - have all had the booking details changed over the past few weeks to show A333s with the suites.

Still loving the new seat... just completed another round trip BNE-PER with little worry about the dreaded 2-3-2 config. I was actually happy to see I was travelling on EBO!

Tried row 1 for the first time in the new seats too - the cut out for the leg room is so much better than any other row, but less private. I was in 1F and had the line for the loo looking into the seat most of the time (FA's didn't bother closing the curtain).

4K is still my fav with the window and privacy.

Rumors on a.net that VH-QPJ will have the Dreamliner interior. Coincidently, QPJ is now on its way from VCV to SYD via KOA and should arrive tomorrow morning, just in time for the 787 presentation...

Why did it go via KOA? I'd have thought it would have the legs for VCV-SYD (nonstop).

Not sure about return to lessor. These two aircraft, whilst on paper are leased, are on a financial lease rather than an operating lease. The difference being on the financial type lease Qantas essentially "own" the aircraft with the lessee holding a mortgage over the aircraft, but when on an operating lease the airline is renting the aircraft from someone else. Key difference is it is a bit hard to return an aircraft on a financial lease back to the lessor. Qantas would really have to sell them with the financial companies approval.

OT but many Qantas aircraft are structured like this, and it was announced recently that they have paid out the financial leases on a number of 737 over the past FY.

Feeling depressed about my trip to PEK next March on EBG/EBL, in Y (although would be worse if I'd booked J). I booked it in ignorance that Qantas could still be operating such an old fitout these days!

Does every Y seat have the under-seat entertainment box that blocks your feet, or is it only some of them?

In Y the difference isn't that much at all. Only the 300's got new seats. And for the IFE boxes obviously the iPad aircraft don't have them but not 100% sure how big they are on the ones with died seat IFE.

Anyway want old A330's in economy try Thai or Cathay, though think Thai have recently parked up some of their old A330's.

CX in Y on their long haul A333s (all of them) is a gen newer than what's on QF's A388's/refurbed B744's.
