American Express Explorer Referrals now live - 110,000 points!

Hello All, I thought I'd share some information on this card which has proved to very useful for my partner and I and enabled us to pick up an additional 97500 Krisflyer miles through a sign-on bonus and a referral bonus (which we're using for travel from Perth to New York in Suites hopefully next year).

My partner is self-employed and works part time and I did not believe met the income requirements of the card. However, I noticed recently that the income requirements referred to household income and not personal income. I phone AMEX to check and they confirmed this was the case. So, last night, using my referral link (http://amex.com.au/refer/samuehe1xd) my partner signed up and was immediately approved for an Explorer Amex, despite having a personal income in the 30k region.

This has proven to be a fantastic boost to our balances and travel plans. I've held this card for a month now and it has become my go to card for non supermarket AMEX spend. It provides me with much more flexibility than my own bank issued AMEX which was linked to Velocity.

The current 110,000 point offer is available until 30 January 2017 which is plenty of time for both parties of a couple to take advantage.

Good luck and if you're inclined I'd appreciate if you'd consider using my link if you don't already have access to one - http://amex.com.au/refer/samuehe1xd

Hi All,

I cancelled my velocity platinum in August (I currently have an supplementary card which I assume doesn't count). Is it still worth risking applying for this card although I've held an Amex within the last 18 months? I'm chasing SQ points, so happy to divert them straight there rather than velocity. (I have read the explorer thread, but am totally confused around ascent / gateway!)

Happy to use a referral link for any help, thanks in advance!

You shouldn't have any problems. A supp card doesn't count and although Amex terms say 18 months, their automated systems will give you the bonus points as long as a new Amex gateway membership rewards account is created. Since you've only had the velocity amex, this is no problems.

Here's my link, would be greatly appreciated:

Also if you want to maximise your Krisflyer points earn, you can apply for the Edge or charge card after you get your bonus points. Hopefully they link your explorer gateway account to the newly created ascent account. Then you can convert all your points 1 to 1 to Krisflyer.

Throwing my link out there, for the first time - if anyone wants to apply, and receive the 110,000 points after $1,500 spend. The annual fee is obviously offset by the $400 travel credit.

As a long time Amex customer, I can attest that with AMEX shop credits, and shop small - their cards are fantastic value for money!

Just put another 20k runs on the board for you adelee. Hope you get to fly somewhere nice with it. Now go ahead and tease us with how many referrals you've got with the 'first cab off the ranks' post! ;) Safe travels. TB>

I just wanted provide an example of use of this card to get united mileage plus/aadvantage miles as well as SPG/Mariott hotel stay from this card.

I have managed to leverage the 110000 explorer sign on bonus points +10000 points from additional spend to obtain 60000 SPG point which converted in to 180000 Marriott points. I had already booked a 7 night stay for 360000 Marriott points at Ritz Carlton, Lake Tahoe for our ski vacation. However, with the additional 180000 Marriott points I was able to instead redeem a 7 day travel package which covered the 7 night stay(Tier 4 Ritz Carlton hotel)+ obtained 152000 united mileage plus miles.

This is one of the best point conversion deals I have ever done . The 152000 united miles included 20000 bonus which finishes 30th Nov. However, even without the bonus 132000 united miles or 120000 aadvantage miles is a great deal. I am happy to answer any questions about the process/options available in SPG/Mariott universe. I have been SPG platinum since 2012 and love the program and the travel opportunities it offers.

My referral link is as follows. Thanks in advance if you choose to use my link. As per disclosure guidelines- I will receive 20000 points as the referrer.

A reminder that anyone posting a referral link must follow the guidelines specified in the sticky at the start of the referral sub-forum.

Specifically:

Update 31 March 2015: Just to be 100% clear. Both the Referrer and Referee must receive the benefit which needs to be clearly defined, transparent and stated in the post. Links to "affiliate-type" sites where the Referrer receives an incentive/bonus, and there is no clear benefit to the Referee for using that link is not acceptable.

Posts that do not have the required information will be deleted.

Re: Your Karma balance will reward you too. AMEX best offer IMO.

Just got my new Explorer card. Very excited about this card. Mainly for the 1SPG point per $ spent. But plenty of value to be had with 1.5 airline miles per $ (possibly even 2 airline miles per $ if your lucky!)

There is plenty of great info on getting the best out of this card on this thread and site. I am excited and hopeful about unlinking and linking my Gateway and Ascent program cards to hopefully get the 110,000 points as an existing cardholder and then get 2 airline points/miles per $1 spent after that. I am also excited about transferring to SPG then Marriott for their flights and stay offers, Alaskan Airline miles here we come.

I wanted to share a tip to anyone signing up for this card to derive even more value from the card. If you find this useful I'd very much appreciate you using my referral link:

It is possible to add yourself as a supplementary card holder, I just did this with Amex. When you add yourself as a supplementary card holder it is called an "Account Card" or "A/C" card. I have one of these on my Gold Charge card as well. I did this with my initials rather than full name to tell the cards apart.

Why would you do this?

1. When I called up to add myself as my first of 4 free supplementary card holder I asked if they were still offering the 5,000 bonus points for adding an additional card holder. The lady went off and checked and said yes that wasn't a problem. These points have already been added to my account and I haven't even used the card yet.
2. One of the best things about Amex at the moment is their Statement Credit offers. I have saved a couple of thousand dollars from the cashbacks this year. Shop small, Harvey Norman, HCF, David Jones, Langtons, Westfield and Myer to name a few. Never hurts to have as many Supplementary cards as possible especially in your own name especially when this card comes with 4 free supplementaries.
3. The reason behind an A/C card is you set up all your direct debits on this card and then keep it safe at home somewhere separate from your other card/wallet. Then if you lose your wallet you don't need to change over all of your direct debits.

There are some great tips on this site on how to get the most out of this card, make sure you subscribe to these threads:

Amex Statement Credits have saved me thousands this year.

For when your annual fee is approaching call and ask them "What have you done for me lately?" I got 84,000 points to keep my American Express Gold Charge Card. The annual fee is only $130!!

Re: Your Karma balance will reward you too. AMEX best offer IMO.

Does someone who hasn't been lucky enough to get a random referral want to post their link?

I'm happy to use it - don't really feel like randomly picking from the thread and would rather it go to someone who hasn't gotten a nice surprise yet.
