Amex Centurion Card eligibility in Australia

Amex's claim that there is no spending limit on Platinum and Centurion is deceitful.
Furthermore, their "check spending limit tool" does not correlate to actual spending limit.
The tool indicated that I could spend 1m, but at above 180k they blocked my card. A phone call later they increased to 250k and for further increases they wanted financials - which I have not bothered sending them - I can always preload the card.
The relationship manager had no idea how the algorithms worked but agreed that the concept of no spending limit was not true for anyone.
I believe the term "no preset limit" simply means no fixed limit, as it says it is "not unlimited spending" right next to it anyway.

It was a bit of a combination, I had a good chat to my Platinum account Manager a while ago and told him that I am working towards the Centurion. Long story short, I got a phone call last week from Centurion team asking if I am interested in the card and got the application form sent to me last week Wednesday. Completed it same day and a week later the Welcome email came.
Annual spend on Platinum card is about 1m a year. Have the card about 3 years now

worth it for that spend.. well done!

Thought I'd give it a shot and request a review (even though my spending is no where near the previous posts).

Spent >150k p.a. pre-COVID (as I had spend on other cards) mostly on F/J, luxury goods and restaurants but dropped significantly during lockdown. Given we are kind of out of lockdown, have put through >20k p.m. on similar spending type for the last 2 months (including this cycle) so will see what happens haha.

Just received a call from an AMEX representative. Asking if I'd heard of Centurion. Apparently sending through an application today. Went through all the benefits of it vs. PC.

I did ask about what happens to the Platinum Reserve card, as I wish to keep that due to no longer being offered with a travel credit (and Centurion not having a travel credit). Said she will find out and get back to me today.

May I ask what type of spending history you had?

Would actually be pretty keen to upgrade to Centurion given significant upcoming spends!

You will be able to keep the grandfathered reserve and it’s credit - at least I was.

Centurion not having a travel credit? Ouch

I'd actually have to check. More luxury this year though. Intl travel, fine hotels & resorts, fashion/jewellery, new car etc. A good guess would be $200-250k.

OK that's good to know. She was fairly confident but I just wanted to here it as a guarantee. Did you get the $5k waived? I didn't broach that question.

I asked politely and it was. I think there is plenty of precedent for that. If they don’t waive it, have to weigh it up if it still makes sense for you.

Great. I believe so too based on what I've read on here. Although I've been notorious for never receiving a retention offer. Ironic as I called this morning but hung up as I had to do something. I was calling to say I want to cancel and if there was a retention bonus.

I don't think I can make sense of it at $10k a pop. We are going Europe in November and even still $10k ($5k really) can be better spent over there with a Platinum Charge card.

But OT but Glad to hear I’m not the only one not getting retention bonuses.

Guessing they saw how much I spend and the system took the risk I wouldn’t leave. I don’t blame them. Though it does sound like there’s not really a set formula for it based on what’s been reported on the ‘cancel’ thread.

yes, sorry to stay OT, I was armed this year (all points gone etc). Oh well.. now I'm here I guess..

Back to on-topic:
Got a call back. They advised yes it will stay, but they recommend leaving the PC open until the Centurion arrives before cancelling the PC. Makes sense, would most likely auto-assign to the Centurion once the PC closes. Whereas I close before activating the Centurion, there's no where for the Plat Reserve to go to.

UPDATE:
No chance of waiving the fee. Not their decision and they don't do it anymore...

Thanks for your data point about the initiation fee. Your RM should take care of cancellation of your PC once your Centurion is up and running - no need for you to do it - just remind them :)

Spouse gets 2 supp cards and I have 2 supp cards ( total 5 black cards). All 5 itemised individually on statement. No extra cost for this. Can also get 5 extra Platinum cards for no cost - I did not get these.
Foreign fee 3%
Pointy,

Can you please elaborate? Does your spouse have her own individual Centurion card and therefore gets two supp Cent. cards?
OR;
Did you add your spouse as a Cent card holder, and she now gets two additional cent card just for that reason?

Reason I'm asking is I was advised I only get one additional Cent card (and the usual 4x Plat Charge Cards).

I understand your post is from some time ago and things may have been different.

This was a while ago.
My wife has her own Centurion card (titanium) with its own number. I seem to recall that we were initially offered only the 2 centurion cards but when I explained to our RM that we need more ( each wanted a personal and a business), they gave us extra cards. That was not enough as the titanium card would not "tap" so when I complained about this they sent me a 5th centurion card which was not tinanium and does work with tapping.
This is all one account with separate sub-accounts. We have since loaded the cards onto our phones so the cards rarely come out.
My RM was extremely helpful and flexible, so perhaps I was lucky.
Since I started with Centurion, I have only ever dealt with one RM who knows me and my preferences very well - I think this continuity is one of the most beneficial aspects of Centurion.

Hi Pointy,

Thanks for responding so quickly.

I understand your wife has her own Centurion card. What I meant was, is this her own Centurion account as well (i.e, was invited to join Centurion).

Basically, I want more than 1x additional card holder to have a Centurion card (not the Platinum). Are your five total cards made up of:
3x Centurion cards in your name (1x personal, 1x business, 1x non-titanium)
2x Centurion cards, listed as an additional card for your wife (1x personal, 1x business)

Thank you for your insight re. the RM. They tout it as so, so in the first year (they won't budge on the $5k initiation) I'd want to be impressed and sounds like I will be.
