amex-explorer-card-art.pngWhy we like the American Express Explorer credit card

This card lets you earn Amex Membership Rewards points at a solid rate of 2 points per dollar, uncapped, without the higher annual fee of the Amex Platinum card.

You can transfer Amex points to 11 airline frequent flyer programs and 2 hotel loyalty programs, generally at a 2:1 rate. For example, this means you’re effectively earning 1 Velocity Point, Qatar Avios or Cathay Asia Mile per $1 spent on the card.

The $395 annual fee is offset by a $400 annual travel credit that you can spend on eligible flights, car rentals or hotels when booking through American Express Travel.

You'll also receive two free annual visits to the Amex Centurion Lounges in Sydney or Melbourne Airport, plus complimentary travel insurance. See our card guide for the full details:

Quick question, all - can ONLY an existing Amex Explorer cardholder generate a referral for a new Amex Explorer cardholder? I suspect the answer is a 'yes' but am interested if there's any variations on this...
Referral links can be generated by existing card owners for the same suite of cards.

So for example the owner of an Amex explorer card could also generate a referral link for an Amex express essential card. And the holder of a Qantas American Express Premium Card could generate a link for a Qantas American Express Discovery Card

Thank you, good doctor.

To those who currently hold an AMEX issued card, did you tick yes or no under the "Do you have another AMEX issued card" in the application?

I generally tick no but yet they still acknowledge me being an existing member when I receive the letter saying it is all approved blah blah blah.
Bonus points still posted after meeting min spend.

Is this still the case? I tried to generate a referral code for the Qantas Ultimate card while holding a Qantas Premium card but the system won't let me.

Definitely. I can generate a Qantas American Express Ultimate Card referral link from my Qantas American Express Premium Card account.

How? I might have missed something obvious but when I go to rewards - refer friends and earn rewards, it immediately goes to the referral page for the Qantas Amex Premium card without the option to select other Amex card range for the referral.

Applied today. The online form actually hung at the step where it says to wait until it gives you a confirmation or what not. Due to my working schedule today, it wasn't until afternoon (several hours after submission) that I could call Amex to check what happened to the application.

After some searching and tracking down some names, turns out I was approved. The operator offered expedited card delivery (for free) - doubt it'll happen, but nice of him to try anyway.

The manner in which Amex will approve one for new cards still astonishes me a bit. I have held a Platinum Reserve for a long time now; maybe that was factored into the calculations, too.

I did tick "yes" to existing card holder. I think I did that when I applied for the Virgin Amex card as well, and I still got the bonus. Still working out how to hit $1500 ASAP, as I don't have any huge expenses to tick off right away, but I'd really like to test that I get the bonus (assuming it credits nearly instantly or the next day after reaching the target - again, this is what happened with the Virgin Amex) before I rope in the rest of my family to apply.

ok, finally, got my first ever AMEX card today!!! am so wrapped!!
tried to activate but it said systerm error for a while but now its working

juts got a few questions, ive generated my referall code, but its saying 30th Jan 2017

.

Amex place great weight on the information that they have gained from having a pre-existing relationship and track record with a customer. Why is this astonishing? Personally I find it most sensible.

I had two minimum spends to meet in December. I prepaid my water rates, two mobile phone accounts for the next four months and booked some accommodation for an upcoming trip. You could also purchase gift cards for your preferred supermarket.
