amex-explorer-card-art.pngWhy we like the American Express Explorer credit card

This card lets you earn Amex Membership Rewards points at a solid rate of 2 points per dollar, uncapped, without the higher annual fee of the Amex Platinum card.

You can transfer Amex points to 11 airline frequent flyer programs and 2 hotel loyalty programs, generally at a 2:1 rate. For example, this means you’re effectively earning 1 Velocity Point, Qatar Avios or Cathay Asia Mile per $1 spent on the card.

The $395 annual fee is offset by a $400 annual travel credit that you can spend on eligible flights, car rentals or hotels when booking through American Express Travel.

You'll also receive two free annual visits to the Amex Centurion Lounges in Sydney or Melbourne Airport, plus complimentary travel insurance. See our card guide for the full details:

mine hasnt shown uo due to having the edge card and ive been told that i havr to book over the phone to use it.

as per the rules it haa to be used in one shot
howeer do you think it would be possiblr to use it in one shot across two hotels? eg 2night at hotel A and 2 nights at hotel B at 100 per night?

Yes.

ie I had a recent booking of a hotel plus a airport transfer from a different organisation to get me over the $200.

Whether it the $200 Edge or $400 Explorer credit you can book multiple items and then pay at the end.

Where did you guys find out about the supp card bonus? I can't see anything on Amex or OzBargain about it. Cheers.

Re: The Explorer Credit Card (New AMEX Ca

Just wondering if this was normal
Am trying to use my travel credit which has to be done by phone. I'm trying to book 6 consecutive nights. The first 3 are more due to being soon the last 3 are normal price.
However if I choose 6 nights it comes up at the higher rate x6.
If individually it's 3 expensive and 3 cheap

Is this normal?

Can be quite normal with some websites, Hilton was known for it. They have improved a little but it always pays to check.

Re: The Explorer Credit Card (New AMEX Ca

Made the call this morning and spoke with an operator to ask about my bonus points, played ignorant when he asked about holding another card in past 18 months. He took a look into my account and could see that I had an Amex which I cancelled in December which he said excluded me from this promotion.

I'm disappointed but that's the way it is. I was hoping to use the referral for my wife and then use our points to book our NYC accommodation which would save us at least $2.5k.

Oh well, I'll keep an eye on the account in case anything happens.

Good luck to all others. I will post my referral link in the correct location in case anyone is interested in applying before the promo ends.

Cheers guys. Just called to add supp cardholder and confirmed bonus 3,000 points applies for up to 4 SCH's each card (for Explorer and Plat Edge at least) so go for it!

Are you 100% sure you can use split bookings?
I think you can however I ve just got off the phone and had basically an argument with a rude staff who in Italy told me Oh no we can't make any bookings over the phone and she's never made a booking before.

I told her about my credit not showing up and then she started making the booking.
Once we got tothe split nights I the supervisor said no that's not the case.

And finally the supervisor says Oh they can't apply the credit over the phone. I must book it. Manually pay for itm
And then they will refund it via the credit.

So damn frustrating

This goes against what I was told. They specifically said the bonus is only for be 1st supp card. Has anyone received more than one 3k pt bonus?

Why does it have to be done over the phone? You should be able to redeem your Explorer credit online. I believe the (dated) AmEx travel portal is powered by Orbitz. What sort of rates do you get when booking through Orbitz directly? It's quite normal for rates to go up if it's a last minute booking. If it's for a booking later this week, perhaps the booking engine sees your full 6 night stay as 'last minute' whereas if you book the last 3 nights separately (probably more than a week from now?), it gives you the normal rate for those 3 days? Silly nonetheless, hotels much prefer a 6 night stay than 2 individual 3 night bookings.

Normally yes you can normally do it all online.

However in this particular instance for SOPOOR (as mentioned earlier in the thread) the Travel Credit was not showing as there was a glitch in it showing due to linking of Edge/Exploerer Cards. Others have had similar problems. For some such as myself the linking did not cause a problem.

It's because my travel credit is not showing up.

I've been to ing and fro ing about this for a few weeks now

Apparently it's a glitch in the system and they can't show two lots of credit. I've got confirmation from a helpful supervisor a few weeks ago this I need to make the booking over the phone and they will manually adjust it

I'd much rather do it online but afraid I don't have much choice in this one

OH and the different rates situation does suck but oh well... Not a huge deal

Re: The Explorer Credit Card (New AMEX Ca

I had the same issue SOPOOR. They ended up telling me to just book online via their AMEXTravel site and they would manually credit the amount back.
But it was such a headache and took about 7 calls and 2 months to sort out.

OK fair enough. Thanks for that.
Would love to be able to do this split thing though.... They were insisting that I had to do it in one shot by self online and then they'd credit it.

Given the headaches you'd expect them to just give you the full $400

Re: The Explorer Credit Card (New AMEX Ca

I currently got Explorer with MR Gateway Setup during 100K Bonus promo last year , thinking about apply for another Amex card and wonder which type of card i still be eligible for bonus - i know that i won't get bonus for the Plat Edge as they are the same type but what about Plat Charge with 80,000 Bonus point ( different schemes to Gatewate ?? ) .

Other member have posted about David Jones Card with 40,000 Bonus ,
the highest Qantas Points on offer is 55,000 Point and Velo 50,000 .

Should i wait until higher bonus offer like in the past with 120,000 for plat charge and up to 80,000 for Qantas and Velocity Scheme provided i am eligible to received the bonus points

Thanks

Re: The Explorer Credit Card (New AMEX Ca

Another data point for those looking to link and combine balances (eg. Explorer and Edge) - it still can be done!

On my 5th call (spaced out over several weeks) I finally hit the jackpot. American CSR, mid-morning Australian time, put on hold for a minute or so and then came back and said "no problem, we can do that for you". Promised an email confirmation and combining of points in 3-5 business days, 110k explorer bonus points on their way to Ascent and then probably KF. Woo!
