amex-explorer-card-art.pngWhy we like the American Express Explorer credit card

This card lets you earn Amex Membership Rewards points at a solid rate of 2 points per dollar, uncapped, without the higher annual fee of the Amex Platinum card.

You can transfer Amex points to 11 airline frequent flyer programs and 2 hotel loyalty programs, generally at a 2:1 rate. For example, this means you’re effectively earning 1 Velocity Point, Qatar Avios or Cathay Asia Mile per $1 spent on the card.

The $395 annual fee is offset by a $400 annual travel credit that you can spend on eligible flights, car rentals or hotels when booking through American Express Travel.

You'll also receive two free annual visits to the Amex Centurion Lounges in Sydney or Melbourne Airport, plus complimentary travel insurance. See our card guide for the full details:

Re: The Explorer Credit Card (New AMEX Ca

Question for people linking explorer and plat edge: My gateway bonus points swept over into Ascent today, which is great (120k points there now). However, my explorer card still seems linked to gateway and is accruing more points there. Is the linking a separate process to the manual points transfer and does it take longer (ie. I should wait) or do I need to call up again to get them properly linked?

Thanks for any advice.

It looks like your process is either half completed or a two step process
If I recall. Mine might have been the same as yours. It took a few days to get it linked

Re: The Explorer Credit Card (New AMEX Ca

Hi Leroy87 can I ask when did you apply for and meet your min spend for the bonus

Re: The Explorer Credit Card (New AMEX Ca

I meant when did you apply for the card ? I ask because I am waiting for my bonus and have read here that it is no longer being awarded for existing card holders .

It can take up to a week to sort itself out.

Out of interest.

How long have you held your Edge?

When did you apply for the Explorer?

And did your sign on bonus post just after you reached $1500 spend, or did it show up some time later?

PS: Things have changed of late and so the forum at large would be interested in what happened in your case.

My circumstances are probably different to a lot of people on here (never had an AMEX card before I got the Explorer), so my experiences may not be that useful. I've also been slow in going about linking the accounts. Anyway, here is the data:

- Applied for the Explorer in late Jan, having never had an existing AMEX card before. 110k bonus points posted perhaps a day after minimum spend was met (ie. no real waiting) in early Feb.

- Applied for the Edge in mid Feb on the first year no annual fee promo. No bonus points for edge (it was 15k but they tightened the rules so oh well).

- Have been trying since late March/early April to get linking done. Many calls to many CSRs. As mentioned above, I've got my Explorer bonus points to move into Ascent, but after 3 days there's no indication of the programs being linked. I'll wait a week and see what happens, otherwise I'll try and call again. Not to fussed if they would require me to forfeit points because the bulk of them have moved over (400 new ones have trickled in since the sweep happened).

Thank you.

So that is more data that shows that after Jan 31 that a application for a new Amex type, when you already had a different Amex does not at least quickly gain bonus points. (ie They may still show up after 8-10 weeks. But may never be awarded.)

Re: The Explorer Credit Card (New AMEX Ca

Can anyone confirm that you can hold:
1)DJ Amex &
2) Plat Edge or Velocity Platinum
and still get approved for the Explorer?

i.e. you will have 3 personal Amex cards after.

Amex told me that I would have to cancel the 1) or 2) to make way for the Explorer. They also emphasized on the phone that as an existing customer (without me asking), that I wouldn't be eligible for any promotion on the Explorer.

Recent reports I've seen suggest you can't do this.

For some time now Amex have indicated that the maximum number of Amex Credit Cards that you can have is two. You can have a Charge Card as well.

Occasionally someone states that they have 3, but that is rare.

I had an Edge and Reserve. I had to cancel the Reserve to get the Velocity Card. And then later cancel the Velocity to get the Explerer.

Thanks. Thought I had seen DJ Amex can be had in addition to the two personal Amex Credit Cards.

Re: The Explorer Credit Card (New AMEX Ca

DJ Amex is the only card which offers the sign up bonus even if your are an existing Amex card holder

Re: The Explorer Credit Card (New AMEX Ca

Cheers guys. Just called to add supp cardholder and confirmed bonus 3,000 points applies for up to 4 SCH's each card (for Explorer and Plat Edge at least) so go for it!
Have you got the bonus points for all 4 cards? I was told it's only the first card I add during the promotion period.

Good old Amex CSR's (and CSRs in general).

Many different answers will be given, and often contradictory.

In some ways I do not blame them as Amex run a truckload of different promos that keep coming and going, and which often have different rules.

Also remember that some of them too work across Amex Cards in different countries, and so more promos and rules again.

That means that sometimes you will not get what you thought. Though the upside is you can also get things that you are not meant to!

Sometimes the same csr will contradict herself .!
I called today and she said you get the bonus for every supplementary card. Said she was sure .
Then later said something about having an invite to apply and said most people have 1 invite to get the bonus but in my case I have 2 so can get the bonus twice but she will call me on Monday to confirm .

Re: The Explorer Credit Card (New AMEX Ca

I can't confirm as I only added one SCH for the Explorer and the Plat Edge, as I don't have anyone else I can add that would give me their ID if it needed to be confirmed! Just going by what I was told.
