amex-explorer-card-art.pngWhy we like the American Express Explorer credit card

This card lets you earn Amex Membership Rewards points at a solid rate of 2 points per dollar, uncapped, without the higher annual fee of the Amex Platinum card.

You can transfer Amex points to 11 airline frequent flyer programs and 2 hotel loyalty programs, generally at a 2:1 rate. For example, this means you’re effectively earning 1 Velocity Point, Qatar Avios or Cathay Asia Mile per $1 spent on the card.

The $395 annual fee is offset by a $400 annual travel credit that you can spend on eligible flights, car rentals or hotels when booking through American Express Travel.

You'll also receive two free annual visits to the Amex Centurion Lounges in Sydney or Melbourne Airport, plus complimentary travel insurance. See our card guide for the full details:

Re: The Explorer Credit Card (New AMEX Ca

I currently got Explorer with MR Gateway Setup during 100K Bonus promo last year , thinking about apply for another Amex card and wonder which type of card i still be eligible for bonus - i know that i won't get bonus for the Plat Edge as they are the same type but what about Plat Charge with 80,000 Bonus point ( different schemes to Gatewate ?? ) .

Other member have posted about David Jones Card with 40,000 Bonus ,
the highest Qantas Points on offer is 55,000 Point and Velo 50,000 .

Should i wait until higher bonus offer like in the past with 120,000 for plat charge and up to 80,000 for Qantas and Velocity Scheme provided i am eligible to received the bonus points

Thanks

My understanding is there was a short window where the credit & charge cards were considered independent so you could double dip on the sign up bonus points (once for credit, once for charge), but that has closed. The DJ AMEX card is the only one which is still independent, but those 40,000 points convert to 22,000 QFF points, so I don't think are worth it.

of course, some have received bonus points outside of the T&Cs but that appears to becoming less frequent. Perhaps look at cards other than those issue by amex?

Re: The Explorer Credit Card (New AMEX Ca

I wouldn't bother getting the DJ Amex card for QF points, there's so many other good QF offers.

However,it's a great option for SPG.

Id move on the David Jones AMEX. Don't forget a referral link to get you extra sign up bonus points.

Bonus points will still be gained even if you hold or have held other AMEX cards within the last 18 months (with the exception of a DJ AMEX card). Points are very useful for SPG. Also supplementary cards are possible so that you can take advantage of cash back offer like the current Harvey Norman deal. With 5 cards from the one account you should be able to net around $200 profit for almost no work. Easily gets back the $99 annual fee and you also get the 40,000 sign up points.

Not challenging you, but I'm not seeing the value. What am I missing??

The value is in this is an AMEX card that you can hold even if you hold other AMEX cards. You will still get the bonus points. This is the precise situation the OP described.

It also gets the OP potentially 5 more AMEX cards for just $99. I'd be stunned if you couldn't turn that into a $1000+ profit by utalising AMEX cash backs over the next 12 months.

thanks for the detail. I was just thinking maybe there were better cards for a sign on bonus, but will add it to my list to consider :-)

I can see potential for some cash back earn (saving) but they seem to be less & less relevant to our spending patterns (suspect the change is our pattern / priorities though, rather than AMEX)

The year is not over year. There's still small shop to come.

I'm expecting at least $1000 cashback for each of my AMEX accounts in 2017.

And here I was thinking that I was doing well with my $1205 of total cash back on Amex Promos over the last 12 months across about 5 actual Amex Accounts + a further 5 supplementary cards!

Speaking of shop small, has anyone heard anything about when it may come back at all?

There's usually one in mid to late may. Based on previous years, is say it'll be 19-21 May. Given I'm away for that entire weekend, it greatly increases the chances of it occurring.

Nothing noted here:

https://www.americanexpress.com/au/content/shopsmall/index.html

But given how popular it has been and the 2016 history I'd expect one weekend in May to be covered by the promo, especially when noting this about 2016 action:

'Following our May and September 2016 Shop Small weekends, we will be kicking offShop Small on 31 October 2016 through to 30 November 2016' (https://shopsmallaustralia.com/faqs)

So hopefully 2 weekends may be replicated in 2017 before the month long event in November.

It's 2 AMEX for every 1 SPG. Then if you want 1 SPG gets you 3 Marriott.

With the supplementary card holder what info do you need to provide over the phone to get a supplementary card? How easy (once the 3000 points have landed) is it to cancel the supp card/s?

Re: The Explorer Credit Card (New AMEX Ca

Name of the person , relationship , address and ID details ( to check the person is resident in oz )
Should be fairly simple to cancel over the phone .

Thank you for the details. So how do people get away with adding 8 different cards for randoms? Or does that no longer occur?

Re: The Explorer Credit Card (New AMEX Ca

Don't think it's possible now . You know you can get additional cards in your own name though ?

Re: The Explorer Credit Card (New AMEX Ca

Question for people linking explorer and plat edge: My gateway bonus points swept over into Ascent today, which is great (120k points there now). However, my explorer card still seems linked to gateway and is accruing more points there. Is the linking a separate process to the manual points transfer and does it take longer (ie. I should wait) or do I need to call up again to get them properly linked?

Thanks for any advice.
