Amex "I'm going to cancel my card" - bonus points given thread.

Re: Amex "I'm going to cancel my card" bonus given thread.

Has anyone had success with getting an annual fee refunded after their renewal date? Particularly on the QF range

Yes. It's calculated on a pro-rata basis so it'll depend on how long ago you were charged the annual fee. Hopefully it's not too long for you.

Fantastic. Mrs Excel's year is up on Jan 3. I'm eligible for another sign on bonus on Jan 1 which I'll ask her to refer me to. Need to wait for the referral points to sweep then can cancel hers :)

Btw that's for all Amex cards. Also, I usually ask to be transferred to a base level card with no annual fee (rather than cancel). If there's a promo on and you meet the criteria you might just grab some unexpected bonus point. That's my churning routine which has consistently worked for my circumstances over the years.

Re: Amex "I'm going to cancel my card" bonus given thread.

I was offered 23k points for my Edge the other day. Annual fee was due and paid in early Dec. I'd usually put through 2-4k a month on the card.

Now the free flight has gone from the Edge it isn't as good a value as it used to be (for me), but still great value in my opinion and with the 23k points offer I was happy to keep the card going! Thanks AMEX!

Re: Amex "I'm going to cancel my card" bonus given thread.

Got 36k for the plat charge, will work on the Edge later when I get the skimmed card replaced.

That in itself should give me some leverage for cancellation.

By the way, have anyone managed to get points for the complimentary Reserve card?

Re: Amex "I'm going to cancel my card" bonus given thread.

Rang up to cancel my no annual fee Velocity Escape card which i have basically never used - was offered 15k VFF to retain.

It'll hang around for another month or so now :D

Re: Amex "I'm going to cancel my card" bonus given thread.

15,000 to keep my platinum edge with an already discounted fee. I will keep this one for another year

I got 100K points no the Reserve when I originally got it (via the Plat charge) - they were running a promo at the time. It hasn't yet come up for renewal yet...

Has anyone gotten points threatening to cancel already discounted professional plat charge cards? Mine will be coming up in March I believe, but I already pay less for the card...

what is the discounted rate?

Re: Amex "I'm going to cancel my card" bonus given thread.

This is my first year on charge but never had any issues with points/fee refund on PA cards previously

Re: Amex "I'm going to cancel my card" bonus given thread.

I normally write a letter or send an email to cancel my account. But I decided to call this time to see if there was any benefit.

There wasn't.

The call took 7 minutes to finalise the cancellation. I was offered nothing to stay with my Qantas American Express Premium Card that I opened 11 months ago. They did say that I was a 'good' customer and was welcome to re-apply at any time in the future or that I could call them with 60 days to keep this account open if I changed my mined. But that was it.

I have a proforma letter which I could complete within 1 min. So think I'll stick to sending it in writing every time as there seems no advantage to placing a call.

I rang up to cancel my Amex Reserve Business A/c - a card I've had for 15+ years and always paid in full. Through pressing the right keys, got put through to a retention area and the lady there went through my reasons - higher fees, not available everywhere I need it and higher fees than my Visa (which also gives he Hilton Diamond due to spend). She didn't even offer points as a retention strategy. Just cancelled it on the spot.

I was disappointed that they made no effort to retain me. If they'd have offered 20,000 QFF points or a year fee free I'd have kept the card. But as it is I'll just wait for the expected new offering of a QFF points based card when the current Ultimate card offer expires at the end of this month.

Re: Amex "I'm going to cancel my card" bonus given thread.

how much did you guys put through with the card for the year?
i have a feeling with the status credits that amex offers, they are starting to not offer incentives to not cancel, as though their focus has shifted to making you want to keep the cards with credits instead of giving you free pts or waiving annual fees

Over 50K for me.

If that's their strategy all I will do is cancel my current card and get a new one straight away. That way I get the new bonus points and still retain the ability to access the AMEX cash back deals.

Same as Dr Ralph on my personal card. Was $100K+ when I had my Business Card as well. I'd be up for SC's instead of points, but ambivalent really...I get Gold comfortably BIS and I suppose getting SC's could trigger a run to Plat again...

Re: Amex "I'm going to cancel my card" bonus given thread.

Amazing.. cancelled both my Plat Charge and the companion Reserve (they offered 23,000 points in total to retain me which I politely declined) and I've now lost access to my eStatements. I was not advised that this would happen (although it's not super unreasonable) so I called to see if they could email me the PDFs. I've only held the cards for 12 months so it'll be 24 PDFs - nothing crazy. I was then advised that it would be $10 a statement. I told them I was not advised of the lost access and / or fee and they're now escalating this. The call centre guy (AU) was pretty cold and short as well. Definitely only calling after-hours from now on and hope for an American rep who've always been far more friendly and knowledgeable.
