Amex "I'm going to cancel my card" - bonus points given thread.

Re: Amex "I'm going to cancel my card" bonus given thread.

Rang after 11 mths and asked if points are offered to keep Platinum Edge. Offered 23k points, which shows up as 'once-off' in the system. Had used flight. Very happy with that result.

Re: Amex "I'm going to cancel my card" bonus given thread.

Should I call before the annual fee is charged or a few days after the fee appears?

Why risk not getting the fee refunded or some compensatory points?
Before the fee you have the upper hand...

Before.

But you'd need to make sure that what they offer you is more than you can get with one of the other sign on bonuses that are currently available.

Re: Amex "I'm going to cancel my card" bonus given thread.

Dammit haven't been getting anything I can work with. Only 8k to keep the card. How are people able to get more points?

Tried 3 times now.

Re: Amex "I'm going to cancel my card" bonus given thread.

How many Amex issued cards do you have and how much do you spend? I think it's determined by spend level and type of products. I have 4 products with modest spend got offered 36k MR to keep my platinum charge.
Mate of mine has platinum charge but spends heavily on it and got 44k.

Re: Amex "I'm going to cancel my card" bonus given thread.

Spent about 3k in the last months on the card. Wanting to cancel to wait out the 12 months in case they have the 100k promo again.

I'm also pretty sure it is to do with spend and they are hardly going to offer much if you spend up in the first month to get bonus points and not much more later on. I haven't requested points bonuses before but did have an expensive annual fee waived through AMEX - when my wife asked for the same they only offered a half price fee and actually quoted how much she needed to have spent to have had the whole fee waived. This was some years ago though.

That's pretty interesting that AMEX actually quoted a specific spend level to waive the fee.

Oh, to see their spend levels for offering various points figures and fee waivers! :p

Re: Amex "I'm going to cancel my card" bonus given thread.

Despite getting offered nothing 2 weeks ago I rang yesterday and said I had seen deals offering points for applying so I would like to cancel. Got offered 20k points which I took. Do you think I could ring up in a few days before my annual fee and downgrade to the Velocity Amex that has no annual fee? (Escape I think its called).

Re: Amex "I'm going to cancel my card" bonus given thread.

platinum edge with 3-4k spend per month since nov '14. called and said i've been offered a ****load of points from one of the banks. got offered 23k points to keep it, which i took

Re: Amex "I'm going to cancel my card" bonus given thread.

Called up this morning, the computer says 36k points for me and even a supervisor can't overrule that figure. The supervisor also confirmed no points will be awarded till you've been billed the annual fee and threaten to cancel..merely contemplating cancelling your card isn't enough justification for the points apparently.

Re: Amex "I'm going to cancel my card" bonus given thread.

Got offered 15k points in their respective programs each to keep a Platinum Edge and Velocity Platinum. Tried to "negotiate" for a higher amount of points. They wouldn't budge. I accepted anyway.

Definitely related to spend. I was chasing a cash back offer that hadn't posted..rep checked that I'd met the criteria and it was credited immediately...then the classic 'is there anything else I can help you with?' Line.(from the English speaking, Aussie based rep). Thought I'd try my luck and asked for a fee waver when renewal was due (in feb). 'Sir I can see you are a high value customer and I can't wave the fee but I can give you 44000 points to cover the annual fee if that helps". You bet.:):):)

Mind if I ask what card that was on?
