Amex "I'm going to cancel my card" - bonus points given thread.

Re: Amex "I'm going to cancel my card" bonus given thread.

I called up to cancel my card today as the annual fee was due today. They said that because I was a long time customer and I used the card quite a bit they offered 15k points to hold onto it. I was hoping for the 30k offer but anyway Im going to hold onto it because I will use the flight. Fyi, I only used the card a fair bit in the last two months. I hardly used it much before that.

Re: Amex "I'm going to cancel my card" bonus given thread.

I got 23,000 points as an incentive to stay. I had called earlier to redeem my free flight but was 3 days over (1 business day). Really bummed and said I was a loyal customer and not felt like I should move to another provider.

The points showed in my account within 48 hours.

Re: Amex "I'm going to cancel my card" bonus given thread.

Made the call today to cancel my Amex Velocity Platinum card, got offered either 10,700 points to move to a no fee amex or 23,500 to keep the Velocity Platinum, not a bad deal so kept the card as I will be able to use the flights again so the $349 seemed worth it.

Re: Amex "I'm going to cancel my card" bonus given thread.

I just called and cancelled my card. The annual fee was just too much. Was offered the no fee amex - but no points were offered at all.

If you decide to change to a free card, the Velocity AMEX Red card has a sign on bonus, so if you decide to change cards, have a look at the referral thread for details to get the bonus (and to the referrer too). It is $1 - 1VA point so a good back up card.

I was so annoyed by the lack of a retention offer for the Velocity Platinum, that I called up an hour later to cancel my Platinum Edge, too. I was offered 8,000 points to keep it - which is what I've done (for now).

Re: Amex "I'm going to cancel my card" bonus given thread.

Called to cancel my Velocity Platinum as the annual renewal fee came through - offered 15,000 points to keep it. Decided to cancel and will instead go and pick up the NAB Velocity for 75,000 points.

Re: Amex "I'm going to cancel my card" bonus given thread.

gonna call up in the hopes of being offered something in a few days, just waiting for my payment to clear so there is nothing owing. shall report back.

Re: Amex "I'm going to cancel my card" bonus given thread.

got offered 15k to stay- took it but will probably still close it.

Re: Amex "I'm going to cancel my card" bonus given thread.

just got off the phone and I was offered nothing which is surprising considering I've put through 70k in the last 12 months.

Don't sweat it. You're now free to apply for the next bonus offering.

I've never yet accepted one of their 'please stay' bonuses. The sign on bonuses just don't justify it.

Re: Amex "I'm going to cancel my card" bonus given thread.

Was also offered nothing, but offered to switch me to Velocity Escape. However, i dont really use this card that much.

I didn't cancel it, they convinced me to keep it for another month and if I still wanted to can it I could without the annual fee being added.
I did however receive 30k points today in threat of cancelling my card.
Since January when I added the Qantas Premium card to my amex account I have been unable to view my points summary (the screen that shows you how many points you get for each transaction) which has been frustrating and something I have called about multiple times. I had 120k velocity points added to my account this week which I assume was via 2 referral links I had posted to friends, however I wasn't able to see it via the summary so I called and told them I was very upset and not at all happy with this ongoing problem and if it wasn't sorted out this time, to just cancel the card. I received 30k bonus points offered because it wasn't fixed today however they've identified the issue and have been promised it will be fixed on Monday.
still bonus points made me happy

Re: Amex "I'm going to cancel my card" bonus given thread.

Just called to obtain payout figure and to cancel Velocity Platinum card and no offer received. I said I would call back once it's been paid (hoping to receive an offer then) and then she said that she could have it automatically close once the amount is paid so I didn't have to call back. Lame

Does it matter when your anniversary date is? Mine isn't until June next year so would it be worth waiting until then to threaten to cancel in hopes of getting offered something?

I'll use my flight first then call back and hope for better news. Otherwise bye bye Amex :D

Re: Amex "I'm going to cancel my card" bonus given thread.

Rang up to cancel platinum edge card - got offered 23,000 points, accepted. Told him I wanted to cancel in order to sign up to other company sign up deals. He understood.

Re: Amex "I'm going to cancel my card" bonus given thread.

seems like Amex has tightened up their criteria around offering retention bonuses, it may be that the profit margin on some of these products is so tight that some types of transactions actually cause them to lose money (eg you only spend at major supermarkets, service stations and utilities that have very low merchant fees)

Re: Amex "I'm going to cancel my card" bonus given thread.

I signed up for the QANTAS Amex Premium (1.25 pts/ $) on a free offer then got them to waive the fee every year for about 6 years (they always said "but this is a once off") until I slipped up and rang after the fee was applied once year. They reversed the fee though and switched me to the basic Discovery card, but I then received 7500 sign-up points which was funny.
I am thinking now of just cancelling the card. The reason I'll give is I want to get a sign-up bonus later on (after the 18 month wait). I don't think they will offer anything since I rarely use the card now.

Re: Amex "I'm going to cancel my card" bonus given thread.

I called Amex today to explore my options. My platinum charge card is up for renewal in a few months. They've offered me 36k MR points to renew. Going to have a think about it. Haven't spent as much on it as I thought but got a shock when they told me I'd spent $50k on dining.
