Amex "I'm going to cancel my card" - bonus points given thread.

Yes, got my points for the Reserve after redeeming 2 tix at the same time (year n and n-1).

Out of interest has anyone had success with bonus points after claiming the free flight (eg plat edge, qf ultimate etc).

Totally, never failed. I haven't tried without redeeming the free flight, perhaps you can get a better deal points wise, but the free flight (or Travel Credit) is worth quite a bit.

Re: Amex "I'm going to cancel my card" bonus given thread.

called to cancel my DJs black card and was offered 30000 points to keep it, i accepted.
30k DJ pts are worth around $200 in gift cards so its not too bad, annual fee of $99.
That was last year june 16'

Today I called regarding the same DJ card to get a replacement as the card was quite worn and was offered 50k DJ pts to upgrade to the platinum card which has an annual fee of $295 or so? anyway I accepted.. was going to cancel the card this year but with it being technically free I thought I might as well keep it for the card numbers..

Thanks AMEX :D

Re: Amex "I'm going to cancel my card" bonus given thread.

Offered 15k points to keep my Qantas premium card. Which was rather surprising considering I don't use the card at all.

$249 for 15k points is ~1.6c a point which is...fine?

It's above my upper valuation for QF points. But would be worth it for taking the points and cancelling in a month's time.

Re: Amex "I'm going to cancel my card" bonus given thread.

Called to cancel my Qantas Gold American Express card. Was asked why I was cancelling and said my fee was up at the end of this month. Was offered a fee free card. No offer of reduced fee or extra points. Closed account.

Two very different experiences for the same card in a 24 hour period. Very curious.

As I reported previously, I also was offered nothing from AMEX when I cancelled my Qantas Express card last month.

I would have stayed for 15,000 QFF points.

What will now happen is that I'll reapply for the same card within the next few months and pick up the 50,000 or whatever bonus points are on offer at the time. So AMEX has lost my spend during this 'down' period and will end up paying me more bonus points.

I think if they are going to offer incentives for staying they need to be consistent about it.

Re: Amex "I'm going to cancel my card" bonus given thread.

Just rang Amex for some travel related booking queries.

I paid my platinum edge renewal in November ... by the way ... I said I know that some Amex customers got given bonus points after they paid their renewal fee. CSR then put me on hold and got back saying .... those bonuses are retention bonuses for customers who are about to cancel their cards. Very apologetic that she couldn't help me (almost in a "hinting" way).

Then, I jokingly said why don't you let them know that I am about to cancel. (She knows that I wasn't going to cancel as I was about to make a travel booking). Got put on hold ... she got back and said we can give you 30,000 points to "retain" you. Not bad for a $149 renewal fee.

Happy days!

Very nice, not a bad deal for a phone call!

If you don't mind me asking, how long have you held the card and what's your average monthly spend?

I have had my Amex Ultimate for about 8 months and average ~$4k per month. I recently had a chat to a local Amex rep about cancelling my card - she said it was too early to offer me a 'retention' bonus, though hinted one may be forthcoming if I ring back in a few months.

22K on the Amex Ultimate today.

Read the fine print because current offers don't apply if you've had an AMEX in the last 18 months.
But that is exactly why i am about to cancel my AMEX Discovery. I am just waiting for the last points to go theory. I doubt they make any offers because I barely use it

Re: Amex "I'm going to cancel my card" bonus given thread.

Just called the AMEX number at the back of the card. Got offered 15k for Reserve, and another 15k for Edge. Not bad.
Been with amex for 2 years and not much spending on the card other than taking up statement credits.
PS, All free flights are redeemed for this year already.

I took your advice and did the exact same thing, to the point I jokingly said 'I give the intent to cancel', and then the CSR offered me 23000 points. Not bad at all!!!

Re: Amex "I'm going to cancel my card" bonus given thread.

Mrs Excel offered $100 statement credit or 15,000 QFF for retaining QF Premium Amex. Paid annual fee earlier this month; accepted the 15k bonus and hope to cancel and get pro rata refund as soon as bonus points post.

Had to go through the "I don't like the discovery card, lower earn rate" for about 5 minutes before points were offered as last resort. Worth the time.

I got 30k points for threatening to cancel pre Christmas. Phoned up today to go through with cancellation hoping they'd offer more. But they didn't and have cancelled. Ah well I get my full $1200 fee back and I'd made use of this years travel credit.

Plat charge. C. $15k a month spend

Now they're saying because I took the points I don't get the fee refunded despite the fact I asked that very question in December and was assured that it wouldn't be a problem as long as it was within 3 months. Case raised with supervisor!

anyone found they had good results ringing AMex in middle of the night?

I have never got time to go through this calling up in the middle of the day, and only remember in the middle of the night, like now (and why I am reading this now)
Whilst some companies have 24/7 support I have found that often when ringing up at night, the staff are not as 'clever'
