Amex "I'm going to cancel my card" - bonus points given thread.

anyone found they had good results ringing AMex in middle of the night?

I have never got time to go through this calling up in the middle of the day, and only remember in the middle of the night, like now (and why I am reading this now)
Whilst some companies have 24/7 support I have found that often when ringing up at night, the staff are not as 'clever'

I have, just not with retention bonuses, I had good results in combining MR accounts (gateway & ascent) so all points to go ascent and the earn rate is better effectively.
I had the same success calling on the weekend, as long as you don't get the Australian call centre, they seem very very keen to agree to every request.

Every time I've called after Australian business hours (excluding weekends), I seem to get the US call centre. Can't say they have been any better/worse with their level of customer service.

Thanks.
I ended up ringing around 6.30pm, got Ria ( who is Indonesian which means nothing as to call centre location), and she was pretty switched on.
I really only wanted to cancel my Velocity Platinum, and get Platinum Edge instead, and she worked out that their system has just changed and they can do a product switch between these two card types now. So did that instead, and she said would take 2 weeks.

So the product switch will take 2 weeks? Velocity points earned during the 2 weeks will get transferred as well? Also, means no credit check needed yeah? Can you confirm once the switch takes place as I'm in a similar boat with Velocity platinum now.

there will be no credit check and I didnt care about the points enough to bother asking, at worst its going to be $5-10 worth of points if it doesnt, and I can just use other credit cards in the meantime anyway.

Do you know if the annual fee will get charged right away after transferring to the Plat Edge? Or the card anniversary gets transferred over too?

Out of interest, has anyone with a QANTAS premium card ever been offered more than 23,000 points to keep their card?
If so, can I ask what your monthly spend is, roughly?

Thanks!

Has anyone tried getting a retention bonus with the amex platinum reserve, the complimentary companion card given with amex platinum charge?

rang up up to cancel my Qantas Premium card last week. I spent around 20-25k last year. Offered 15k QFF points to keep it. I cancelled it anyway

We spent around 2k a month on the card that got the 15k bonus.

the velocity points earned to date were transferred on the day of the changeover, which was the 6th March. My internet banking now shows the product change,.

Hubby called up to cancel his card tonight. No incentive, not even when suggested, nothing, nada. Only thing they could do was to give him another card with $0 annual fee that still earned points, but no bonus points anywhere. Needless to say, he cancelled the card...

Was it a well used card?

May make a difference which card he has. Platinum Charge, Reserve, Edge, Qantas ...

Also, annual spend would probably make a difference as well.

It was the Amex Velocity Platinum, not a very well used card the last month as we had spend criteria to meet on others... But we can wait 18 months and get a new one :D

My datapoint

Amex Plat Edge - Member since 2012

My annual fee was paid in Jan but thought I'd give them a call just to try.

CSR asked why I wanted to close my account, I gave the recent changes to the free flight / $200 travel credit as the reason, I asked if there was anything Amex could do in the way of bonus points to help my decision to stay with Amex. CSR said yup straight away and offered 23k. Accepted the kind offer and wished him good day, not a bad return for 5 minutes on the phone.

Nothing extravagant on monthly spend but recently moved into a new house so last few months have been relatively (4-5k) high due to furniture etc.

TLDR: Amex Plat Edge, 23k bonus points, 4-5k monthly spend, Member since 2012
