Amex "I'm going to cancel my card" - bonus points given thread.

I got 50k 44k 36k 36k over the past 4 yrs
seemed to me it was a sliding scale but could have been spend.

Called to request an additional supplementary for my explorer and mentioned that I was considering cancelling my platinum edge given most spend is via explorer now (well anz black really ;)) Offered 15k on the spot to retain. Have only pushed 20k through that card in last 12 months.

Offered 30k to retain Platinum Charge. Unlikely to take up the offer. Can't justify the fee for the benefits particularly considering: I have both airline and hotel elite status, the Explorer offers similar insurances. Accor plus platinum was great too but now is no more.

The good people at AMEX are apparently quite open to negotiating. There first offer is not their best offer.

Heads up for those thinking about cancelling their Amex cards and expecting a pro-rata refund. When I enquired upon cancelling my Ultimate, the CSR made me aware that Amex Australia will not be offering pro-rata refunds after the 2 month window. Enforcement would be universal across all card types and will commence 'soon'. Might be worth preempting this move if you are considering a pro-rata refund within the next few weeks.

Over the last 5 yrs told that the computer tells them the deal they cannot change anything

Care to share more? I've been told it's the best and final offer.

Initial offer was 15k. I said I needed to think about it, called up a few weeks later and said for it work for me I needed 20k points and that's what they offered.

I suppose it doesn't hurt to ring up and call again and get someone else if they are playing hard?

Very interesting. Was your second phone call closer to your annual fee date (or were they both post annual fee)?

First call was about three weeks to annual fee. Second call was day of the annual fee. The higher points offer was confirmed the day after in a callback.

Thanks! I have a theory that you will get the best offer just before or just after you've paid your annual fee. But I would have thought a month out from the annual fee being due would be close enough.

Just called to cancel my velocity platinum that I've held for 2 years, annual fee due in August.

Have only put say $2k each month on it so very low. Had all intention to cancel it but was offered 27k velocity points which will go through on next cycle in a week or so. Had to say no to that kind of deal.
